The original post is your basic "Fanfiction is a waste of pixels", but the comments are long and interesting with his wankish argument that ignores those pesky things like logic.

All I ever have to do for the original/fanfic argument is think of Sentinel. Crap TV show that turns out some of the best fanfic ever. (Also, some of the worst, but hey)

Link gacked from Elina, a smart fun popslasher.

I think there's a lot of out-of-ass-talking going on there, both in the post and in the comments. I mean, anybody can have a belief that fanfic isn't as creative as original fic. It's been argued for years, and at the nub, it's just personal opinion. But the idea that none of it is good or creative at *all*... leads me to believe that the commenters and the OP are making generalizations so massive that they're meaningless.

If you don't know that 'slash' is fanfic, or what it means, you haven't read enough of it to be remotely credible when you start bitching that it all sucks.

It makes me giggle that this guy is whining about how unoriginal and uncreative fanfic is...yet, his own argument has already been made, thousands of times before, and many of those times by people far less annoying than he.

Irony, thy name is Wank.

I haven't written fic in years, but this guy is almost enough to make me start up again. (I'm currently writing some original fantasy. w00t.) Maybe I'll let that ire jumpstart this Hunter x Hunter/Naruto crossover fic idea that's been stewing in brain for a few months now...

Hey, whatever floats your boat. There are people who get off on handjobs from people in fursuits as well. There are people who enjoy anime demonic scat pr0n.

Man, this guy could win the long jump in the Olympics (Wanklympics?). It's a huge leap between fanfiction and demonic anime scat porn.

I take a deep sense of personal... amusement in the fact that Furries can been invoked into any conceivable argument, regardless of topic, participants, subject matter, or anything else.

Still, nothing's quite as embarrassingly wanktastic as an argument between Furries.

a) who says a young person who uses wax pencils on paper as his/her medium isn't an artist, if his/her work is creative and provokes an emotional response?
Not if they're just tracing another person's work.
So, Andy Warhol wasn't an artist?

Best. Comeback. EVAH! Someone give elina a big wanky hug from me XD

Yes, but this guy doesn't even have an agent, whereas Diane Duane, Kevin J. Anderson, and Peter David pretty much have lifetime contracts. Ahh, I love the scent of irony in the afternoon.

Or is that just fabric softener?

I love the Lord of the Rings characters, and I loved the trilogy, but I'd never use those characters because I feel that Professor Tolkein has fully developed those characters. There's really no room for improvement/expansion.

every time i hear 'no room for improvement' (or expansion, for that matter), my eyes bug out. how can anyone be so lacking in imagination as to say that ANYTHING, EVER, leaves no room for improvement? i mean. hi, meet the universe... it's infinitely large. meet the universe of fiction... which is, if possible, a somewhat larger infinity, as it's not bound by things which have already come into existence nor by physical laws.

the expansion bit can be disproven simply because there were things the characters didn't do and things about them you come away from the story not knowing!

my head hurts.

Gosh, I guess I can't write my story set in the "Dealing With Dragons" world that stars one of the characters' grandaughter and another's great-niece, because even though those characters never even existed in the books, the entire world of those books and everyone in them and possibly involved with them has been fully developed. ^.^

myself, what i want to read is morwen/telemain. i mean, the naughty bits. cimorene and mendanbar are all very well, but they got a bit boring after searching. whereas telemain is just the kind of geeky little boy you want to strip nekkid in a particularly vampish way just to see him stutter... ::coughcough::.

Except, of course, all the expansion that Christopher did after the good Professor's death.

Oh man; now I ought to live in fear. I've finally decided to take a stab at fanfic, and now I need to worry. *sarcasm*

And what about those of us who RP as canon chars? Is what we do just as unoriginal and coat-tail-riding as fanfic?

And I love what Aerie said. From what I've seen so far, that's how the fanfic world divides. Amen to that.
