Y'know, when I originally heard the term 'intellislash', my first thought was, "So the rest of us are stupid?". It does sound kinda elitist if you just hear it out of the blue.

And I agree that a lot of fanfic on the internet is crap, but here's where I think I differ from a lot of fen--I will go and read net fic on a recommendation, but the great majority of what I read is in fanzines. I love a good 'zine, have ever since I got into fandom. And there are a heck of a lot of good writers in them that some folks don't see, since lots of editors won't accept stories that have been on the Internet.

OK, did I go off into wank territory, there?

I have to wonder who died and left the right to determine what's intelligent and what's not to the intellislashers. So it's not canned H/D or unreadable. That doesn't mean you can come right out and declare yourself to be more "sophisticated". After all, there might be a postmodern statement about the absence of meaning in an unreadable just-add-water slash fic. Who's going to beat that?

Oh, not this again.

I left an explanation of all this on bonibaru's LJ during the last intellislash kerfuffle, but she deleted it.

As briefly as possible: When I and a bunch of folk entered the fandom 18 months ago, some of the folks who had been around a while longer (like Stacey and Cassie) called us intellislashers. Because we were into the meta (yes, that's wanky!), and some of these people are amazing writers, like Olympia and Penelope-Z, and they were producing fics that were a little more ambitious than what folks were writing at the time, when the fandom was much smaller.

Obviously once we heard people calling us intellislashers we all fought against the term because (1) what the hell is intellislash supposed to mean? All of these folks write in really different styles, and (2) it sounds ridiculous and elitist.

But it never went away, and so finally as a huge piss-take we started the archive. I understand that the joke may not be clear to some, but it was never an attempt to say we were better than anyone else. It was just mostly making fun of ourselves, and anyone who would be stupid enough to keep shoving this dumb label upon us.

Now you can argue that maybe it was a mistake for us to try to reclaim this term. You're probably right. I for one wish it had never been invented, simply because it sounds so elitist and pretentious. But again, we didn't invent the term, it was forced upon us by other folks. It drives me crazy when people say, "Who the fuck do they think they are? They think they're so much better than everyone else!" when most of us hardly write at all.

I think the best explanation for why there’s the prefix of intelli- is because that during a period of fandom in which most slash you could find was utter crap (well, it was. despite the fact there were some obscure good fics circulating around then, most slash was either painfully mainstream and canned H/D, or just completely unreadable toss.), these people sprang up and started writing sophisticated, decent slash that catered to a picky palate.

So I take it that Cassandra Claire isn't an intellishasher since her writing's crap?

I admit I haven't read the thread, so this might have been repeated already, but I really don't agree with the first post on one point. Intellislash is not an abstract concept of fandom, it's a small group of around 8-10 people with oe website, so whatever this joke is, it's pretty much directed at us. So I don't get why the negative reaction to this bad pun, is supposed to be so wanky, while the pun itself is not. So if one is being mocked for dubious reasons, it's ridiculous that one gets offended, and mocks back the person who initiated this? You insult us, we insult you, so how come one of the two ends up getting the moral high ground here?
