Anime dubs: they're like cocktail umbrellas, in a way Yesterday, AnimeNewsNetwork posted a news blurb stating that ADV would soon be releasing Princess Resurrection and Clannad in half-season sets with a low price point. (Usual MO is 5-6 individual DVD releases, aka "singles.") There was much rejoicing and congratulations of ADV's new strategy, not only at ANN but also the formerly AnimeonDVD and now Mania boards. A few troublemakers tried complaining about the lack of singles and ADV's packaging, but were quickly silenced. Regular AoD poster The Great Bear summed it up: This is one of the best decisions ADV has made in a while. Ty wasn't shy about expressing his feelings either: Season sets rock, $39 rocks, coming out earlier than expected rocks, ADV YOU ROCK. My day just became good. Unfortunately, trouble was brewing... Dragoon: this does make me concerned, how they are putting this out... could it be a sub-only release? Things have been very quiet among ADV production circles.... Alas, Dragoon's suspicion is soon proven correct. Clannad (and Princess Resurrection) will be sub-only! After some brief attempts on both boards to write it off as a mistake, the wailing and gnashing of teeth sets in, accompanied by accusations, tortured metaphors, links to ADV's online feedback form, and backseat theoretical anime production. Jack still has hope: Yes it will be dubbed, a certain actor told me that auditions were/are/have been held. Fudce's Caesar impression is impressive: I'm really sickened by this, I know I've said it before, but it is heralding the death of Sentai Filmworks before they're even established for me. John Ledford give us something with one hand (a season set) and then stabs us all in the back with the other while we're distracted by all of the shinies. Prede is feeling hurt, too: It's sad that us dub watchers are still second class citizens in this day and age. If anime comes out dub only, you know you'd be pissed. It's the same thing for us dub watchers when it's sub only. So try and be understanding of other people please. Some of us watch anime in English Dubs. Your kind of being rude dude... ... If the dub was sacrficed for half season sets, then by all means screw the box sets, and go the singles route. Remember the dub is not an extra, not to me anyway. It's a way of watching anime. I could deal with singles, if it had a dub. Quarkboy doesn't know what he's starting here... Saying that people should be just as angry about a sub-only release as a dub-only release is ridiculous. That's like the difference between your mai-tai not having a little umbrella in it vs. your mai-tai not having any alcohol in it. Fudce: But what if someone buys the mai-tai for the little umbrella and the flavour, and don't really mind the alcohol content as long as it tastes the same? Draneor Going with analogy, I guess I buy mai-tai's mostly for the umbrella (which is more of a decoration--a better choice for dubs would be maybe lime juice), but also want some rum with it. I suppose that does raise the question regarding why I buy mai-tais at all and not just umbrellas and rum... I don't think Bluesilo understands how popular Ouran is vs Clannad. Or something. I don't really understand Bluesilo. Then how do you explain "Ouran High School Host Club". Did Funi give that show a dub because they believed every fangirl would run out and buy it. Sure it has a popular manga to help sales but its still a dubbed boxset. I'm sure they want to make a profit on it otherwise they wouldn't have released it that way at all. ADV could've made a bilingual boxset and released it at the same price point. Would it have sold the same probably not. Do I know how much it costs to License show A vs show B, no I do not. But it could've been a option to say the least. Herron has some deep thinking to do: Part of me wants to send them an email stating my displeasure, but at the same time I feel like a hypocrite because I have supported subtitled only releases in the past. ... But really I think a part of me is getting tired of it. Tired of supporting something I'm not going to fully enjoy. I may start changing my buying practices to reflect this. Again I don't mind watching sub releases but I've noticed I tend to rewatch the shows that have been dubbed a lot quicker then the ones that haven't. ... Generally I have a lot of thinking to do about my anime buying and support. For those not into mixed drinks, Ty gives us a more standard metaphor: The way I see it, looking at it from a dub lover's point of view, is that sub-only releases are like getting a car with rims that have no tires on it. Yes, technically speaking the car will still you to the grocery store, but the experience of driving there is now unacceptably unenjoyable. I think maybe my comments were a bit preachy or arrogant and I didn't mean it to be like that, but what I was trying to get people to think about is this: if you really really enjoy eating then what is more important the drive or arriving at the grocery store at all? But then everyone starts to group hug and talk about how at least they aren't as bad as those awful Crunchyroll kids destroying the industry today. Quarkboy's post gets the ball rolling, there are a few last ditch personal attacks, amd for the most part things wind down from their heady heights. ANN, meanwhile, is still going strong. Elfen Noir, after hinting that "reasons" kept him from watching subs on AoD, comes clean with the horrible truth on ANN: I agree completely with this, plus I physically need an English dub because of sight problems and the inability to read the subtitles and follow an intricate plot at the same time. I will continue to support companies that provide me with what I need. I was looking so forward to Clannad, I am majorly disappointed. SongstressCela shares her personal sorrow: Now that Clannad is sub only though, sorry. Not going to happen. I'm glad to see so many people up in arms over this, because while I am as much a supporter of the American industry as I can be (my personal collection practically looks like an old Suncoast aisle), I can't justify supporting such shoddy work. ... I wouldn't buy Emma and Marimite despite really wanting them, because of how much both series would have benefited from a dub. The same will go for Gakuen Alice, which Shawn Kleckner has confirmed to me personally that it will also not receive a dub (if this information wasn't already known). She's also certain of ADV's financial status: I can't really say why I think they're not doing too badly. I don't have a source, or any insider info, I just have a feeling they're not exactly in danger of going down anytime soon. Maybe they have some issues, but I don't think they're at death's door. ... Regardless, the point stands that if they can't dub a series at the very least, they shouldn't license it at all. Sailorsean has come up with a clever workaround: FUNIMATION, IF YOU READ THIS! PLEASE RESCUE CLANNAD FROM ADV FILMS!!! ... I SINCERELY WANTED CLANNAD TO BE DUBBED EVER SINCE I FIRST HEARD IT WAS LICENSED!!! AirCooledMan_2006 keeps his cool: ...they're trying to alienate fans and commit corporate suicide. ... Honestly, I'd love nothing more than to find and then beat the living shit out of the asshat who made that decision. Bonus quiz! Is Mario1234567 trolling or genuinely outraged? You be the judge! Its subbed only will they release a dub version???? can someone give me ADV's E-mail or anyway I could contact them?? cause I wanna know! I have watched Clannad 5 times on my computer Subbed I wanna see it in a different way. Damn them Why did they haf to do this I knew it was to good to be true. I hope ADV Dies and Clannad gets passed to FUNimation or Bandai. if I want sub i'd watch it on my computer (Again) >_> |
