He's super, thanks for asking!

Chuck Austen, a comic book author that has been the bane of Uncanny X-men fans will be writing storylines Action Comics, the actual name for the main Superman series.

Choice bits from the interview:

"Oh, it's not really that much controversy. It's the same twelve trolls all over the net. Most of the X-Fans are nice people, who are enjoying what I'm doing on 'Uncanny,' and mostly keep quiet so the twelve angry trolls don't molest them.

"But, honestly, it'll be worse than the X-Fans. Superman's older, and has more long term fans. I did one story in line with the direction I'll be taking, and the Internet exploded with rage and hatred. But honestly, it doesn't worry me. Some X-Fans complain loudly, but they are few. Sales are waaaaay up since I took over. If people were hating my work as much as those trolls claimed, sales would be tanking. These are just jealous people who want my job and think they're smarter than me. I can't be good, because they have different ideas. BZZZZT! Wrong answer. Thanks for playing our game. Here's your consolation prize. "

Also:

"But I've also been outspoken about my hatred for continuity. And this is making manga more appealing. Do you know how hard it is to write a story with a world threatening menace when everyone knows Thor is floating over New York with all the other Norse Gods? All these books tied together, all these bits of history and minutiae that fans expect you to know every single piece of? Jeez, what a nightmare. And so pointless. Anyone who disagrees does not understand story. "

The fans react badly.

Me, I'm just boggled this man still has a job.

Um, yeah. c.c; And all that booing was really just from five people, and the rest were booing the booers. Or it was amplified by the station. Whatever the excuse is today.

his hatred for...continuity?

The manga thing confuses me. Did he say japanese comics had none or did he mean something else? or was it a "I'm going to make the american ones so fscked up you're going to run far far away AHAHAH BOW BEFORE ME, MORTAL FOOLS" and I think I lost track somewhere in that sentence.

jeez. I can't remember if I ever read any Uncanny by him or not and I'm not a major superman fan but---ehn. fuck it. This comment is too long as is.

Methinks he read a couple of Ranma GNs out of order and thus declared himself an expert on manga.

How utterly conveeeeenient, DC Comics' "Contact Us" page is out of order. Guess they're not interested in people telling them they don't want to read comics written by a guy whose goal is to make fans hate him.

Odd, I was under the impression that continuity helped make stories, y'know, infinitely better by allowing far more time to dwell on them. Not that stand-alones are a bad thing, or that continuity can't completely backfire, but having no continuity whatsoever, and publicly decrying it? What is this guy smoking?

Sometimes continuity can be a bad thing. Like when you're introduced to a fanfiction writing group with seven years of backstory to read through before you can write anything. It's frustrating, and I imagine writing for DC Comics might be a little like that.

The problem with this comparison, though, is that he's getting paid to write stories that will become the future canon. Not to mention that from what he's saying, he sounds like a complete dickhead: "I AM GOD! FANS BE DAMNED!"

Wait. He hates Lois, he's going to make Superman no longer a boy scout type, and Clark is going to demoted to the level of "shmoe work"? Are you sure this guy isn't a vengeful fanfic writer in disguise?

Dude, this whole thing is a fanfictionist's rant. Just replace all references to comic sales with references to website hits, and substitute the fandom of your choice.

Only, you know, he actually gets paid. In money.

*cries*

Our 'Heroic' Writer is just going to learn what other writers have learned. If you fuck up the guy you're writing too much, you will be fired and your stories will be retconned.

It's happened before. Most notorious example, making the old version of X-Force a bunch of Matrix looking psychotic killers. (They destroyed an office building owned by the mob. Drastic but I would have cheered it, if they had bothered to evacuate the cleaning crew they -knew- was inside).

When exactly did he take over? I suspect that increased sales could be traced either to the general resurgence in graphic novels, or to the emergence of the X-Men movies and cartoons.

I know he took over before the second X-Men movie. The first Uncanny X-Men I have that he wrote was issue 410, from 10/2002. (Being a dork and keeping a comics database pays! w00t!) Before that, it was Joe Casey.

This reminds me of the famous SNL skit where William Shatner was speaking at an SF con, and went all off on the Trekkers... Only that was a SKIT, not somebody being a dick about the people who pay them...

I don't know much about Chuck Austen, but I have quite a few issues written by them. They have an almost soap-opera quality, with the Annie/Alex/Polaris shite that's going on. And I know that everyone at Nightscrawlers was pissed for a mistype that said Nightcrawler was born twenty years ago...

Ooo, I have a question. Would a former-comics creator becoming paranoid that the company that he formerly worked with was now 'hacking' into websites that talk about things before a certain continuity change? The replies to the way he acted aren't wanky in the least bit, but the way he was talking was over the top...

Wow, sounds just like the two token Canadian writers that got hired on for season 4 of Stargate SG-1. They came from writing for 'Teen Wolf on Campus' or some such and then *bragged* publically about how they hadn't bothered to watch the previous three seasons of the show or even the movie that spawned it.

Because, hey, who needs continuity? Or talent, come to that, when a healthy dose of arrogance and an ego that could sink Vancouver will suffice...?
