Buffy wank on Twisting the Hellmouth.
Twisting the Hellmouth is a Buffy fan-fic site mostly for crossover stories. Awards are given by popular demand in different categories.

JoeHundredair, who is apparently a moderator on this site, decided a winning story written by mrmiklos contained too many grammatical errors and spelling mistakes… that the story was “sufficiently bad to prevent the majority of readers in enjoying the story”, and so quarantined it.
The reasoning:
After reading the start of 'Sunnydale Berserker' by MrMiklos, I sent him a review suggesting he acquire a beta because as an award winner, I felt his story should reflect a far higher quality of work than it did. In other words, we voted it the best, so it should be better than other stories on the site... right?

Upon further review, JoeHundredair and other moderators say ‘just kidding’ and decide the grammar/writing isn’t really that bad. However, the story was not properly classified as a ‘multiple crossover story’ when it was submitted to the site, and awards are not given to “multiple crossover” stories. So TtH removed the award from MrMiklos; a second author, Marcus Rowland, also has his award stripped for the same reason.

Marcus Rowland handles this with some grace.

mrmiklos does not, and flounces off.

Only he doesn't fully flounce off, but sticks around to fight some more.

JoeHundredair continues to comment back, with CAPSLOCK to EMPHASIZE some POINTS.
Abuses of power and vedetta abound.
Ignotus, a commentator, tries to keep perspective:
You know, this reminds me of something that I saw happen at my local library the other day. That situation was resolved quite easily... the mother took the kid home.

Wank continues.

Edited to make links work, hopefully.

I like how you have this one totally classy dude with "Marcus" and then you have mrmikolos and Joe slapfighting over all of it. It's like putting a tumbler of Glenlivet next to a Smirnoff and an Appletini having a bitchfight.

Goddamn I need a drink.

Good writer too. His Buffyverse/CSIverse crossover series is a lot of fun.

You intentionally made me look bad to make yourselves look better. Your actions were and are petty and childish.

Why do people like this never seem to realise that they're making themselves look bad, petty, and childish without anyone helping them at all?

All the links led to the same post/page, although if you keep scrolling down you can find the wanky goodness.

At this point the disgruntled writer is apparently threatening to sue the mod for printing an email he sent. Threatening to sue for copyright issues.

You are correct. Unfortunately for me, the address for each link is pegged to the specific comment #--as though each comment were a different thread--and yet the link still bounces me back to the top.

Sadly, that's about the height of my skill in html. I encourage mocking and education.

Copyright indeed. I like that the mod paraphrased the comments to satisfy the author, which is just way wankier.

I saw this yesterday. Wondering when it was going to show up!

There was some lameness on the part of the mods: as they themselves said, the later chapters do have a higher standard of writing. Besides that, if enough site visitors didn't see it as a problem, why should they?

That being said, I think they did go back and do the right thing and reviewed all the winning stories. The second story that was pulled down ended up having the award go to 3rd place since 2nd place was won by a mod, which I think was semi-classy.

I just hope they learned their lesson THIS year and screen better next year to avoid this crap.

Marcus has been awesome about the whole thing. And, I might be mistaken, but I believe he actually brought the issue with his story to our attention in the first place.

On thing though, JoeHundredaire has an 'e' on the end of it.

Let's see ... awarding a prize for something and then deciding it doesn't qualify? Whatever the circumstances, that's epic fail in itself. There may not be time to read everything ... but if so, why offer the prize in the first place? However once you've decided something is going to be the winner you really should read it then or you get egg all over your face.

Oh, wait, that's what happened ...

Self-inflicted wound, then, innit?

Damn, I'm glad I stopped reading TtH a long fucking time ago. As mods who are in charge of the awards...shouldn't they have taken the time to go through the nominees before putting them up for judging if you have to write perfectly?

I'm just saying. It's kinda of shitty to take an award back once it's announced.

Wouldn't it have made more sense to let them keep the award this year, but check closer next year? I'm pretty sure that's how it usually works when something like this comes up. As far as I know, awards only get taken away if there was cheating involved.

So... single-crossovers have the potential to be literary genre-award winning masterpieces, whereas multi-crossovers can never a higher status than guilty pleasure.

Am I missing something here, or have these mods redefined the word "genre?"
