When Stupid Really DOES Burn . . .
I stumbled on this a few wanks down, and I think this deserves its own Wank Report.

(EDIT: Sorry, hadn't realized that [info]sparklefield had already covered this one a while back. Oops. But I've added extra links and stuff at the bottom!)

So there's a board called Twilight Sucks where people who don't like Twilight can get their hate on.

Somebody has helpfully complied an entire directory of threads reporting incidents of 'attacks' by rabid Twilight fans, which range from "Cussed out" and "Slapped", to, well . . . this one:

Well after reading the forum I decided to finally make an account...the reason being, an attack on my best friend by a psycho fangirl.

I'm sorry to be the one who raises the bar.... I'm still in shock over it....This monday morning, we were in a chemistry practicle, doing experiments. All seemed to be going well and boring. Well seemed to be untill my friend say the girl next to her reading New Moon, and not paying attention.

Now, not wanting to be bothered by her for the next 2 hours by her asking 'what do I do?' Because she wasn't listening to the lecturer, he got her attention, and the following conversation took place:

Friend: Hey, you should be paying attention, instead of reading.
Girl: Excuse me? I'm reading a twilight book....
Friend: So, I don't care, pay attention so you don't spend the next two hours asking us how to do this experiment, because i'll tell you to 'f' off.
Girl: What do you mean you don't care about twilight. Its the greatest series of books ever!
Friend: There crap. Love stories for teenagers to faint over. Your 19, act your age.
Girl: How dare you say twilight is crap! You don't know what your talking about! I'm going to fucking get you for saying that. You'll regret it prick. (She put the book away and glared with a look which could have punched through steel)
Me: Jeeze, just calm down. No need to get in a fluster over a bloody book...(whispering to my friend jokingly at the time) Becareful, i've heard some twilight fans are a bit bonkers, so she might 'get' you...
Friend: (laughng) Yeah, don't worry, I'll feint being scared later.

So we went back to listening, and we started the experiments. 20 minutes in everything was going fine. I looked over to the girl and she had beakers out, acid. I sighed thinking she didn't listen so she hadn't a clue what she was doing so she was doing the wrong things. I couldn't be bothered telling her what to do so I didn't say anything. 5 minutes later she said for my friend to turn around because she wanted to know something, so he did.

Suddenly in a fit of rage, she picked up a beaker full of acid, and screamed 'You bastard twilight hater!!!' and threw the whole beaker of acid in my friends face. He screamed, and tried to get away, however the girl, obviously not contempt with ruining his face, got a compass out and proceeded to stab him several times with the compass. I was in a state of shock, but somehow I managed to gain enough sense to be able to knock the compass out of her hand, and tackle her to the ground. she was kicking and screaming and clawing. The other people around jumped into help me. The lecturer dragged my friend to the emergency shower and tried to wash the acid off his face. Somebody ran to get the first aiders. Meanwhile we decided to move the girl, so I got off her and a few people grappled with her and moved her to the other side of the room, and stopped her from escaping. I sat down in shock, I couldn't believe that anyone could od anything like that, because of a book. I orginally doubted some of the stories people had posted in here about being attacked, thinking they had made them up...but after seeing this, they are propably true...

Eventually paramedics arrived and took him to hospital. The police turned up at the same time. They started taking statements from everyone. They arrested the girl, and the look on her face of pure smugness, obviously happy about what she'd done infuriated me. How the hell can someone be so callious??? Its a bloody book!!!

Well after going to see him this morning, he has burns in his face and neck, and he may have permenatly lost the sight in his left eye and has 7 small punture wounds, luckly nothing to serious from those. I feel sick, that someone did this over a book... How can something like this happen??? Why did it happen???

23 pages and counting of reactions range from "OMG! Call the news!" to "Pics or it didn't happen."

The OP posts two more times in the thread to clarify two points--that the attack was in the UK, and that his friend is reluctant to have his picture taken--and then slips off into the night, leaving everybody else to frantically retcon the questionable parts of the story.

I'm appalled at your lack of civility and the damage done to your caps key.

PLEASE show me all of the "other cases of things that actually happened". Those things that are so dangerously similar to someone getting a beaker full of acid thrown in their face.

I'd rather not believe a story like this is true. It makes me feel ill just thinking about it. But I'd never write it off entirely, for the small chance that it could be true.

tl:dr -- Anti-Twilight fans are just as wanky and prone to respond emotionally to badly written fiction as Twilight fans are.

EDIT TO ADD: [info]annepackrat points to one particular debunking that notes the similarity between the incident and a scene in another teen vampire series, "smug expression" and all.

Oh, and, better yet, there's an additional thread on the nature of skepticism. Includes the mind-boggling assertion that a random, nameless person on an internet forum is actually a more reliable source than anything you see on the "national news".

EDIT MOAR: (More linkies from [info]annepackrat) Since there seems to be a curious dearth of media coverage for this incident, somebody decides what we really need is an Internet Petition to make those media people pay attention!

Plus: DeviantArt article about the incident and other Twilight-related 'attacks'.

With authentic dialogue like that, I know I'm convinced.

This totally happened. A friend of a friend was there at the time, and repeated the exact same thing. It was quite a tragedy, because the person whose face got burned was also the victim of kidney theft the year before. What a world.

I'm disappointed in the OP. When making up injuries the first rule is to don't go with a visible injury, because people will just want to see it. Concussions work, acid to the face; not so much.

Either that or go really outrageous and see how many idiots believe you before people start calling your bluff: "So then after the Twilight fan severed my arm, I picked it off the ground and BEAT HER TO DEATH with it!! Afterward everyone on the bus stood up and clapped but our enjoyment was short-lived as the little shit had activated a bomb when she heard me talking smack about Twilight and now we had to keep the bus going at 50mph to keep it from exploding! It's cool though, me and my one arm, jumped into the driver's seat and kept that bus going until the bomb squad arrived (where I met my new BF) and then when I finally got to the hospital (10 hrs after everything started), the doctor (my other new BF) was finally able to reattach my severed arm. An hour later and here I am telling my story!"

I totally and completely believe that story. It's not like the dialogue sounds like it could have been FROM a Twilight book with how awkward and hallow it is.

You know, it'd be very strange if someone really did come up with an awkward battle cry when attacking someone and talked like that. No one would ever believe the victim. Wait, no. I say that like I've never watched people BS on the Internet.

..there's a reason why books such as Fahrenheit 451, Nineteen Eighty-Four, and Catch 22 are (or were) required readings. ..when schools taught students to think. We should always think about things for ourselves instead of taking anything for granted. Even more so when it comes from mass media.

It absolutely cracks me up that someone posted this little gem in a thread whose basic premise is that everyone should believe the acid-in-face story just because SHE SAID SO.

And if most of the people in that forum read any of the above mentioned stories, I'll eat my metaphorical hat.

Yes, you can be skeptical, everyone can. Heck, you can be skeptical of your own gender if you want, but there's many more civilized ways of pointing it out.

So... is gender-questioning relevant to this discussion in some way I'm unaware of?

Personally, I start doubting the story when the *teacher* is not the one who calls out whoever is *reading a fiction book* in the middle of a class. I don't know how chem lab works on the UK, but I'd guess that teachers don't like it when students are paying attention, especially if they happen to have illegally strong acid among the freely handled material.

Also, even if this story is true (which I doubt), it doesn't put the person in the best light. I don't think I would come out and say "Wow, that book you're reading totally sucks!!!"

I actually had to do a Google Images search to figure out that by "compass" she meant "that mathy tool that helps you draw circles" and not "that round flat thing with a needle inside that helps you if you're lost in the woods."

Because being stabbed with the latter is very much a... not-stabby situation. More of a ker-thunky situation, really.
