Entry tags:author entitlement, boo hoo, comics, creator wank, don't make me come back there, fandom: watchmen, hollywood doesn't want my money, i swear i will turn this comm around, i'm just here for the recipes, in ur wank - swapping our foodz, isn't it awfully nice to have a penis, let's all get along, misogyny soup, oh christ here we go again, oh wait you fail, omg mock people mock, political correctness, raised by hyenas, rape, rape is not funny, recipes in comments, serious business, still not funny, stop sharing your thoughts, think of the children, this is not funny, thoughts on yaoi, too many fucking tags, unfunny business, wanking inside the house, we fail at not being misogynists, we love jf tags, what is wrong with you people?, writers are often pompous douches, yummeh foodz

He was also responsible for doing the voice of Solid Snake
Watchmen screenwriter David Hayter writes a sincere but slightly tongue-in-cheek open letter on Hardcore Nerdity to Watchmen fans and non-fans, to urge them to see the movie more than once in order to understand it.

One of his other points is that he thinks those who hate the movie on principle without having seen it should let it marinate in their minds and give it a chance:

It may upset you. And it probably will upset you.

And all along, we really meant it to. ...All this time, you’ve been waiting for a director who was going to hit you in the face with this story. To just crack you in the jaw, and then bend you over the pool table with this story. With its utterly raw view of the darkest sides of human nature, expressed through its masks of action and beauty and twisted good intentions... Like the Comedian on the Grassy Knoll. ...You'll be thinking about this film, down the road. It'll nag at you. How it was rough and beautiful. How it went where it wanted to go, and you just hung on. How it was thoughtful and hateful and bleak and hilarious. And for Jackie Earle Haley.

Trust me. You'll come back, eventually. Just like Sally.

Comments begin in the 'we love Watchmen (although some of us have reservations about the swinging massive blue dong), go Dayter' mould, until people, from page three onwards, suddenly notice the metaphor he used to describe how the movie should make you feel:

DUDE. No one asks to be cracked in the jaw and bent over the goddamned pool table. Was there NO OTHER ANALOGY you could have used? Do you realize that you're comparing your movie to a rapist and the moviegoers to victims asking for it? And what is this "You'll come back. Just like Sally" crap? Do you have any f***ing idea how offensive that is? Could you not have come up with some other analogy, some other pithy tag, something that doesn't make it out like the Comedian was doing Silk Spectre a f***ing favor when he beat her bloody and tried to rape her?

Did you mean to do that?? If not, erm, consider your words more carefully next time you do the "open letter" thing, because wow, did that part get away from you.

Dayter comments on page 7 with an apology claiming he does not condone violence against women, which is edited into the original article. People briefly thank him for apologising, and then attack him again. Dayter responds graciously via huge spoonfuls of sarcasm and retracting his apology (page 8):

Clearly, you can't get less hateful or spewy than that. I humbly retract the statement.

Anyway, I'm sorry you disliked the film.

And you're right, I don't know why I ever set out to do this in the first place. It's really the world I'm hurting. Damn my family, and their almost-constant need for food!

On top of all of this there's huge amounts of movie rage, but the best thing about the whole altercation is the people at Hardcore Nerdity going so far as to make a video response urging people to LEAVE DAYTER ALONE, starring a very angry Dr. Manhattan.

P.S. to Zillah, if we can't tell rape jokes, what jokes are left? Everyone is SO sensitive!

I guess there's always "yo momma" jokes. You know, like "yo momma so dumb, she raised a clueless little jerkoff like you."

...hm, no, I guess that isn't all that funny either. Rape jokes it is, then!

I just... argh what no!

[info]also_not_a_pipe

An LJ friend of mine mentioned vegan Earl Grey cupcakes on her journal, and in response to my "OMG WHAT YOU SAY" this is what she sent me:

INGREDIENTS
1 cup soy milk or rice milk
4 Earl Grey teabags or 2 tablespoons loose Earl Grey tea
1/4 cup canola oil
1/2 cup vanilla or plain soy yogurt
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest
1/2 teaspoon grated orange zest

DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line muffin pan with cupcake liners.

2. Heat soy milk in small saucepan over medium heat until almost
boiling. Add teabags, cover, and remove from heat. Let sit for 10
minutes. When ready, dunk teabags a few times in soy milk and squeeze
gently to extract any soy milk before removing. Discard tea bags.
Measure the tea/soy milk, and add more soy milk if it is less than 1
cup.

3. In a large bowl, whisk together oil, yogurt, sugar, vanilla, fruit
zest, and tea mixture until all yogurt lumps disappear. Sift flour,
baking powder, baking soda and salt into wet ingredients. Mix until
large lumps disappear; some small lumps are okay. Fill tins full and
bake about 20 to 22 minutes until a sharp knife (or toothpick)
inserted into the center comes out clean.

4. Let cupcakes cool in pan for 5-10 minutes before transfering to a
wire cooling rack. Make sure cupcakes are completely cool before
adding topping.

TOPPING
The book suggests topping these with powdered sugar (a light dusting
once they've cooled, with an additional dusting of sugar just before
serving). Being an icing addict, I used vanilla buttercream instead.

Completely off topic, but does anybody know what the deal was with Dr. Manhattan? I mean, his whole tragic story seems to be that he left his wife for a younger woman and then turned out to be bad in bed. Then he gets (very easily) manipulated into thinking that he gives people cancer and he goes off to Mars to sulk. That's not being dehumanized, that's being a very human, very selfish and immature idiot. You would think coming back from the dead with a whole bunch of superpowers would make you think, but no. It's virtually impossible to intimidate the man, but he still puts on a suit to go on TV and meet the president. And when the president asks him to do something, he justs obeys.
Even Harry Potter at the age of eleven has thought trough the consequences of his gifts better than that.

As I've already seen the movie...

1.) Don't skip it just because of this.

2.) Amazingly, Hayter's comment is probably one of the least morally and ethically problematic issues with the movie. Comedian's a horrible, horrible person but it's the pacifist vegetarian who only wants world peace who goes ahead does something the Comedian can't even think about without going mad.

He's saying some people are likely to have deeply conflicted feelings about the movie. And like it or not, Sally in the movie does have less than 100% straightforward feelings about the Comedian. Because nothing in Watchmen is straightforward.

Irrelevantly, I'm mildly amused by the Rorschach love, given than if anyone made his comment about lesbians being killed due to their "perverse lifestyle," here, they would not have fans. To say the least. FW is about the last place I would expect his peculiar blend of extreme conservatism and sociopathy to have a following.

I'm really sorry guys, this whole thing had me in stitches. I know it's wrong, I really do, but for the life of me I can't stop giggling/change my views on Dayter. Sorry. I love cranky fanboys.

Still not seeing the movie however (which is probably why I'm not batting an eyelid here)

I don't really get all the comments saying they're not going to see Watchmen because of this... It's not like Hayter was the only one working on this movie. He didn't even write the final version of the script!

But yeah, what an asshole.

I can't cook, so have Rorschach ripping his shirt instead.

I think I know what Hayter was trying to put across, because when I finished reading Watchmen it bothered me that the whole story started with The Comedian's death. These other superheroes got their panties in a bunch over that guy's death? Really? The Comedian was a grade a bastard and I only wonder why no one killed him before then. Take Rorschach for instance: Wasn’t it his “mission” to get rid of scumbags like The Comedian?

Anyway, I don't know if the movie can hold on to the audience the way the comic book did, with all its morally complicated protagonists i.e., fucked up characters. Like Doctor Manhattan with his endless but godlike excuses, and The Comedian who I wanted to stab in the face very badly. Then there’s Rorschach who is a racist, homophobic, right wing douche-bag… with a heart of gold *eye roll*. Like Moore must have when he developed Watchmen, Hayter thinks we’ll end up caring about these asshats and their stories when everything's said and done.

Personally, I felt dirty walking in the aforementioned character's shoes (like I did reading Wanted—well, not quite that dirty), I would have preferred if other characters took my hand and walked me through the narrative, which I ultimately enjoyed, but all I got was the assholes. That's what I think Hayter meant by his, um, metaphor? Watchmen doesn’t give the audience much choice who takes their hand, but he thinks the audience will like where they end up anyway.

He could have skipped the rape metaphor, though. Just sayin’.

(P.S. I still don't know why people, myself included, got so upset by how you-know-who’s story ended. The guy was a dick. But I still kind of cried for him)

Oh wow. I'm going to go do something that's way more fun than reading this report.

Like cleaning out my cat's shit-tray.
