Let's Learning About Japanistan... with Wanker!
Small but headdesky wank from [info]wank_report  , my one-stop shopping source for wank in fandoms I'm not personally involved in.

nakomislona posts to blackstones, a community for NANA (manga/anime/movie) fans. nakomislona admits to spending an hour trying to figure out character parantage. Specifically, she is trying to figure out
who fathered Hachi's oldest kid: Takumi or Nobu?

(I personally have no idea who these characters are, and found that my ignorance did not at all detract from my enjoyment of the wank that ensued.)

nakomislona puts forth detailed information but determines it "too close to call," opening it up to the community for discussion.

Commenters are, for the most part, reasonable and reasoned, going back and forth about the facts vs. their shipping preferences without wank... for the most part. There is one very special snowflake: the_sweet, who's trying to make herself appear as the comm wapanophile Designated Authority on Japan (and NANA character parentage) because she lived there and she taught there.

In an otherwise small post, she's all up in there.

Some favorite quotes:
Show me your statistical proof of Japan's growing teenage pregnancy rate. Links, please. Statistics lately have been showing that Japan has the LEAST amount of sex per capita!
So you must come up with link evidence, but she's allowed to pull them out of her butt. Okay!
The only reason why I got worked up over it was because you were stating incorrect things as if they were facts, without any proof to back yourself up.
"And that's only okay when I do it!"
Having lived and worked in Japan, I know a lot about the education system there as well as a general attitude toward sex; you can't run off assumptions, nor should one spread them around because "they heard it was so." ... State what you feel all you want: just make sure it's clear that it's just your OPINION, not fact.
You shouldn't run off your own assumptions, you should run off hers, because she knows for TRUFAX.
All I was asking for was for you to show HOW you "know" what you know. It's not that hard. Plus it would help if you noticed that your two "FACTS" contradict one another, hence my asking for proof.
The two "facts" were a) Japan has a declining birthrate (true) and b) Japan has teenage pregnancies (also true). These things are not mutually exclusive, the_sweet. Japan has a low teenage pregnancy rate, but that doesn't mean there aren't any teen pregnancies at all.
*sigh* The Internet is a poor medium for certain kinds of discussions, and I'm guessing this is one of them.
Translation: "The Internet is a poor medium for making other people agree with me."
My point was that a condom could break and neither Nobu NOR Hachi could have known about it at the time (just because a condom breaks doesn't mean someone takes a look at it after the fact and goes "Oh noes!").
... oh dear.
Next, the publishers don't usually have any say in regards to the content of the manga, but the editors do.
She probably learned this from being a teacher in Japan, since every teacher in Japan becomes an expert at the comics industry, durr.
In Japan, at least, even if statistically they're the country having the least sex, that certainly hasn't hampered their pornographic industry (whether in the form of live action, games, anime, or manga) any. People still watch rated-R movies with fairly graphic sex scenes; young people still "get the idea." That's their sex-ed: the media.
I wish the_sweet had added links to sources supporting these claims. Oh, wait, I forgot:
And before anyone asks how I know all this: I lived in Japan. I taught there. THAT'S HOW.
