Entry tags:fandom: transformers, let's all get along

WARNING: Season 3 spoilers in-thread.
Some backstory: About a week ago, rather unfortunately around the time of the completely mindblowingly awesome Transformers: Animated season three premiere, the Transformers Wiki broke. The host decided to upgrade without backing the Wiki up or telling anyone about the upgrade, and was generally incompetent. Everything was rolled back to the last backup-- which was from even before they moved in from Wikia-- and everyone went JKDHSKJDHDSHJ until a bunch of people got together to help download the pages from Google's cache and wrote programs to convert it back to Wiki format from HTML. Understandably, it's a bit of a mess.

The "Bookworm Virus" refers to a catastrophic database fault suffered by TFWiki on the evening of March 15, 2009. Though the initial cause remains obscure, a variety of complicating factors resulted in a total loss of TFWiki's database and all backups, rolling the site's clock back to mid-July 2008. -- TF Wiki entry on the event.

In search of fans who have strong opinions, lonegamer78 comes to the IDW forum to ask for some help. Jeysie, a fellow repairfan and someone who flounced from the forum some time ago, comes in to echo the request. Badly.

The old Wikia site's kind of gone to pot due to vandalism and poor editors... you'd think for all of the people who bitch about how we'd do things, they'd go and turn the old Wikia site into how they'd want a TF Wiki to be... but I guess they're too lazy to do anything but whinge about those of us who are willing to spend our free time adding information to a Wiki. </controversy> Razz

bloodandsteel doesn't find this to be very pleasing, and gets into a snit-fight with Jeysie on it. Jeysie is insulted that the fans don't appreciate all her hard work.

Let me lay this out. Our whole wiki got hosed by someone's unauthorized incompetence . I just spent upwards of 20 hours over two days trying to help so far. We're going to have to reformat and repost over 9000 pages. By hand.

You'll pardon me if my sense of humor is not working at the moment. You'll also pardon me for telling someone with zero sense of tact exactly how it is.

bloodandsteel also complains that people are being hypocritical by complaining on the talk pages, while others claim that the Wiki shouldn't have so much humor in it.

I call bullshit.

So if I were to write a completely unbiased page about you that gave you undeniable glowing praise and told about how lovely a person you are and then went into the Talk page and slagging trashed you and everything you've created for everyone to see and trashed the people who went there supporting you, that would be acceptable behavior?

I should tell Shane that!

Answer: No it wouldn't be alright. It would make me two-faced, and I'm not. If I don't like something or someone, I let them know unless I'm required to behave in a professional manner.

In summary it's a slap fight between people claiming that the other side was mean to them first, with the neutral parties headdesking all over the place. A rather normal day on the IDW forum, really.

Wow. Just....o_0

On the other hand, this whole thing is a major on why webmasters everywhere should seriously consider the virtues of BACKING THAT SHIT UP FREQUENTLY.

As far as I can tell they did back them up. And then they lost the backups.

Shun the nonbeliever! SHUUUN!

No, seriously, shun him. The jokes are the only reason I visit the wiki, since I ain't much of a TF fan. It makes a refreshing middle ground between the stilted pretentions of Wikipedia and the near-lunacy of TVTropes. Like porridge, it's juuust right.

I don't understand how people can want the TRANSFORMERS wiki to be serious. It's about a lulzy 80s 'toon with big robots. OBVIOUSLY THIS MUST BE GIVEN THE GRAVITAS IT DESERVES.

Also, I'm saddened by the loss of so many of the images. I didn't realize how much I used the wiki for fanfic referencing purposes until it was gone. :(

Everyone knows that Transformers is a serious documentary on the on going class struggle between Autobot and Decepticon. It's historial accuracy is only surpassed by it's quality of story telling.

(That kinda hurt to write...)

Don't forget the artistic, high quality animation, that is so lacking in todays over-commercialized children's media.

(Seriously. Transformers is my fandom, but the wacky hijinks and overt toy marketing are what make the cartoons great.)

I'm just sad I can't find the clip where the cells got mixed up in "Child's Play". When they all got on the toy rocket and flew back to earth, after Perceptor rode the huge kitty cat.

As you can see, this is a SERIOUS CARTOON that deals with SERIOUS ISSUES.

I like the one where Reflector decides he wants to try out Starscream's colour palate.

Or the entirety of City of Steel. It's pleasantly like being on strong cold meds.

City of Steel is fun dreadful but the less said about B.O.T the better.

Gasp! Transformer is not for children! There needs to be serious violence and grim and gritty plot lines!

(Transformers is my fandom too and while I really do love the depth of the fanon I am perfectly aware of the ridiculousness of canon.)

I think the comics (All Hail Megatron especially) are trying to go grim and dark.

I have no idea if they've succeeded in doing it WELL, but from what I've seen it's certainly dark. Except for the whole metal cigar thing.

Yeah, they certainly are. I haven't read that many but Origins: Megatron was rather dark and the recent Movie prequel comics are super dark.

I'm not really a fan of the recent comics but I enjoyed the Marval comics. They balanced it all well.

Even when you're doing comics about giant robot wars you're still doing a comic about war so I do understand the gritty.

(The metal cigar thing is just cute!)

The metal cigar is weird. He doesn't even do anything with it, it's just there hanging out of his mouth while he talks.

Gritty war's nice and all, but from what I've heard it's not good with anything else. Like, y'know, emotional depth.

Maybe it's the TF equivalent of chewing on a wheat stalk. *shrugs*

It is unfortunately a fan boy dominated market so they get what they want. TF:A is much better for its emotional depth even if it it can't get too deep, what with all the kids show thing.

It looks like some random screw or machinery part he picked up somewhere.

Pretty much. I think if the robots got too deep into friendship or (gasp!) romance there'd be a fan uproar.

Says a lot about them, doesn't it?

Oral fixation? *is shot*

If the mechs get close then it's "queer", if they get a girlfriend then it's "illogical" or "pandering to the fan girls."

I just wish they'd quit with the 'icky girls get out of our manly mechs' in both canon and fandom. I sometimes feel like a bi-sexual girl gamer english major in Transfandom. (even though I'm none of the above at all XD)

He's using it to get over his drinking problem.

No shit. The main argument I hear against it is "they're robots! They can't feel love or attachment!" which...yeah, they kinda can. I blame Furman.

But then, I always blame Furman.

Like one of those weird nicotine inhalers? Maybe it'll be an important part of some weird do-hicky down the line. *adjusts tin hat*

But! but! They're fully sentient world building creatures! (and from the meta view humans can only really write about humanity so they can't actually be fully alien.)
There's no excuse for shoddy characterisation. The robots thing doesn't mean they should have the emotional depth of a spoon outside of battle.

Furman is cheap and easy to blame. It's like the one stop shop! XD

Given a full range of other human emotions, no reason they shouldn't be toting along ones that attachment and a need for social contact.

Well it's canon from various comics (Spotlight:Wheelie comes to mind) that being alone for awhile makes Autobots at least go a bit do-lally That proves the need for social contact and (probably) close bonds. Hah! XD

They may be watching children's cartoons and collecting toys based on the characters in the cartoons, and then making a comprehensive database of all the facts about the cartoons and the toys, but they don't want anyone to think they're *silly*.
