Aaaaah, Harry Potter, the fandom that never fails to find different ways to wank.

[info]terminal_frost is quite a prolific icon maker. She has a second journal, [info]striped_fox, in which she posts all of the icons she makes. In one of her latest posts, she displayed some Harry Potter house mascot icons that she made.

From a purely asthetic standpoint, the icons aren't that bad. But the problem is, the colors that she used for the icons aren't the correct house colors. [info]onceuponatime13 kindly pointed out that striped_fox had used the wrong colors, and wank ensued as striped_fox attempted to defend herself through various excuses, such as "the real colors don't sound right together," "words like 'bronze' and 'yellow' are too long to fit on an icon," and "they're my icons, so I can make them whatever colors I want."

Later, she made a post to [info]hp_icons whining about how people were flaming her and insulting her artistic vision in her own journal! (*gasp!*) My favorite part is this bit: (the emphasis is mine)

"Oh, and just for the record, the HP series, as good as it is, is not gospel, and nothing Rowling says should be considered iron-clad. If it's not stated specifically, then it is open to interpretation. (Look to fanart and fanfiction for a clear demonstration of that fact.)"

Um, excuse me? How is JKR not the person with the final say in something involving the series of books that she writes?

I don't usually like to get directly into this stuff, but honestly. You've got to be fucking kidding me, at least in regards to Rowling's word not being iron clad. LAST I CHECKED SHE'S THE CREATOR OF THE SERIES. DAMN IT.

Not to mention that house colors ARE something that Rowling explicitly stated, again and again and again. She's just basically saying she's such an important and cool fan that her word is worth more.

Eh, I think onceuponatime is the one being wanky here. Yeah, it was a little weird for the icon maker to change the colors, but she does have a point in that it is her journal and her icons, and she can interpret things however she likes.

Besides, onceuponatime seems to have a disgusting superiority complex. Take this line:

And, the fact that you like them make me even more sure that they're horrid since, afterall, you have a MOVIE icon.

A MOVIE icon! How dreadfully plebeian. *sniffs contemptuously*

Certainly, but if she has the text on the Ravenclaw icon reading "Blue and Gold Forever!" then she shouldn't be surprised that someone called her on it.

Ooh. :( 'Tis not my creation. Ivyblossom made a whole bunch of HP related icons, and that's where I got it. (But I wish I had made it, because wheee! marriage proposal! *g*)

Well OBVIOUSLY JKR doesn't know what she's talking about as far as Harry Potter stuff goes, anyway- I mean, for god's sake, she won't even aknowledge the twoo wuv of Harry and Draco, or even the SACRED JOINING of Lupin and Sirius!

Good thing the fans know better, eh?

Although I think both sides of this issue are being wanky, I can see the case against both.

There's the case against Terminal Frost. I mean, if the word doesn't fit because the font is too big, you can always make the font smaller... contrary to popular belief, the human eye is capable of seeing words smaller than the size of a child's fist.

The thing is, OnceUponATime is treating the incorrect colours issue as if it were a matter of life and death. I mean, come on man... this is Harry Potter fandom we're talking about here. I'm sure you've seen thousands of instances of canon-rape that are much worse.

And honestly... WTF? Yeah, without Rowling there wouldn't be a fandom, but yeah, she has no say in it whatsoever. Like, how about if she stopped writing the damn books?

Well IMO I have the give the Crow of Wank to Terminal Frost, while both sides are incredibuly wanky I think she takes the cake with her whipping out obsecure, pointless facts, non-stop bitching, and her running to another community for a good old fashioned ego stroke.

Yeah Onceuponatime was taking it a bit to seriously but I think she was only trying to help.

I haven't dared to look for Digimon Frontier fanfic. I've seen soooooo much utter crap in Season 1 Digimon fandom that I'm just too scared. I can't recall ever seeing a het Digi-fic, and yuri's really really rare. (Well, one het fic, but only in MST form.) Digimon Frontier can only be worse, since in later episodes I think a yaoi fanauthor was doing the actual writing... @.@

I know what you mean.

In summary, it appears to be going something like this.

Argument A: Your icons are ugly and you are quite the fool -- ha, ha, ha! I can hardly mock you enough.
Argument B: I know more about house crest than you or JKR, so stop questioning me! And gold is the greatest color ever, hello, it SHOULD be included in three out of four houses colors!

Good one. Both sides are wanky -- Ze Fox is being a little over-the-top about expecting actual heraldry from, c'mon, A KIDS' BOOK -- but "onceuponatime13" really gets up my spine far more. I mean, look at this arrogant little bitch:

And, the fact that you like them make me even more sure that they're horrid since, afterall, you have a MOVIE icon.

*GASP* Oh good heavens. Do people like this really exist...? *rubs eyes* I mean fuck, us old-school LOTR purists get huffy at newbie moviefen sometimes, but there's nothing wrong with A) the movie or B) having icons from it...

You think Malfoy would like having WHITE, such a boring colour, to represent all the glory that is Slytherin?

Oh right it's all about that sexay DRACO! Or is it that sexay LUCIUS (though I bet this peabrain would spell it "Luscious")?

White - yes, that symbolizes purity, something Slytherin is NOT. So, really, white is the wrong colour for Slytherin, either way you put it.

Honey, come here. Sit on Auntie Kielle's lap. All comfy? Okay. I'm only going to say this once: HARRY POTTER IS A BOOK. All better? Good girl! Go play now, and for gods' sake stop spitting on the other children.

Thank you very much for providing a link about my adventures from earlier, with your honest review of such. I don't mind at all. What's good for the goose is good for the gander, right?

Apparently some of my comments were rather stupid (such as the whole "fan superiority thing" - you're right about it, and that it is my mistake to say what was said, and I'll admit it). I was merely trying to be civil and ask that their comments be relevant to the post itself (apparently I failed - miserably, in the fashion described here).

Anyway, no real harm done (right?), and the lesson was learned. Next time think before speaking.

Thank you all and good night.

Don't ask me why, but this reminds me of an ep of SNL where Steve Buscemi hosted and he played this guy obsessed with the movie Grease. 'The T-birds were originally going to be called The Pelicans. Could you IMAGINE what Danny Zuko would think about that? He'd go nuts! I mean, damn!'
