The Russet Doom Saga, Part IV
In Part III, we saw what happened when Lady Sybilla tried to tangle with the Twilight Lexicon mods for the last time (they banned her), and watched in awe as Wikipedia users worked "around the clock" to get her Russet Noon article deleted. You can still find "The Wikipedia Wars" linked on the Russet Noon website, but you'll have to scroll down past...

The FanHistory Wars.
A long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away....

Artistic revolution (who, for reasons which will become blatantly obvious, is a suspected sockpuppet of Lady Sybilla) edited the shit out of the Russet Noon fanhistory page. Artistic revolution has a pretty one-track mind, it would appear. Or two-track, if you count Lady Sybilla as a separate topic.

In the midst of all those edits, there was no shortage of information about me, Sybilla's own favorite "stalkarazzo." (I know I'm her favorite, she says so herself on the Russet Noon website.) The following information is culled from the Revision as of 00:27, 21 April 2009 version of the page.
Although Caito posted the email text on one of her many Journalfen pages, her only acknowledgment of Sybilla's concerns was: "I'm totally over this email business. I have a spam filter and I intend to use it. If someone wants to continue discussing this shiz, she can do so in the comments like everybody else." Strange reaction given that Caito's Whois record for her site openly discloses her gmail address:
At this point, Artistic revolution somehow thought it was appropriate to include my mailing address and contact information. Yes, in the middle of the article for Russet Noon. But that's not all! She did go on. I bolded my favorite parts!
More recently, Caito provided us with a video example of how the attention-whoring for which she mocks Sybilla is more contagious than a disease. Ironically, while she spends her valuable time making fun of the ''Russet Noon'' author for trying to exploit Stephenie Meyer's popularity, Caito, too, seems to be riding the wave of the ''Russet Noon'' obsession. And she does so quite gracefully. If it weren't for Caito, ''Russet Noon'' would have never achieved taboo status.

... On April 3, 2009, LadySybilla emailed Caito and asked her to stop her "online stalking activities." On this email, Sybilla warned, "If you don't, I will notify as many administrators as I have to until they take action." Sybilla then contacted the Journalfen technical support team to ask how she could contact an administrator in order to report libelous accusations posted by some of their users. But, instead of responding to Sybilla's concerns, the JournalFen support team (if, in fact, there is one) forwarded a copy of the email to Caito. This incident may or may not prompt internet users to wonder about the legitimacy of Journalfen. Is Journalfen an actual company? If it is, who are the tech support staff and/or administrators behind it?

... Judging by the look of things, it won't be Sybilla who will be profiting off of ''Russet Noon'' sales after all. Let's see what happens when Caito and her BFFs at Twilight Lexicon get their hands on a copy of the novel in September.
All that has since been nuked from the actual FanHistory page, and replaced with more evenhanded material. People here at FW went a little flaily for a bit, as a software snafu made it appear as though FH mod Sidewinder had been the one to add my personal info when she'd really just meant to take it down.*

Then the mods brought the hurt down on Artistic revolution, who has been banned from editing the wiki for two whole weeks! She's really sorry, though, guys. Please stop throwing stones at her, and let her catapult boulders at others in peace.

But it's not like Artistic revolution has been the only one tooling with it, either. Some anons got in and tweaked it ever so slightly, like changing the story summary simply to "OH JOHN RINGO NO!" Editing the Russet Noon article is temporarily locked to admins, due to anon vandalizing and a neutrality dispute.

Personal notes:
  1. I do not know what end anyone would hope to achieve by posting my address.
  2. I'm not BFFs or even BFs or even just Fs with the TwiLex mods, but I sure do like them more than I like Lady Sybilla.
  3. I have no clue how I would stand to profit from anything having to do with Russet Noon.
  4. I have no idea who Lee Thomas even is.
*Aside to FanHistory folks: Thanks. I really appreciate what you did. Do me one more solid? I did respond to Lady Sybilla's concerns about my "accusations", but I guess it got lost in the epic wave of comments. Like I said before, Lady Sybilla is welcome to come engage me in comments, but as far as I know she has yet to do so. Muchos gracias.

ETA
: Artistic revolution rides forth on teal deer to appeal to Laura's professionalism.

ETA 2: Laura responds!

ETA 3: The Russet Noon website is now basically a hate shrine dedicated to me and FH mod Sidewinder, complete with Photoshopped screencaps of me interacting with people I've never actually interacted with. Oh, and also my contact information.

You know, I'm starting to get the feeling that she doesn't take criticism very well.

ETA
4: From Artistic revolution's usertalk page:
I'm not interested in antagonizing you. You have been objective, but I still have to insist that Sidewinder, whoever she is, hasn't been. She might not have the same IP address as Caito, but her editing patterns are dubious. I have listed the evidence on my website because I'm blocked from doing so here. If I'm not allowed to edit the article, then at least Sidewinder should also be prevented from tampering with it any further.

All in all, as I said before, I'm not interested in antagonizing you. Based on your reasons for why Wikipedia blacklisted FH, I know you can understand how I feel in regards to Russet Noon. I have seen that your procedures reflect professionalism. This is why I appealed to that.

I sincerely apologized to both you and Tikatu, but never received a reply. At least at Wikipedia they lifted the ban. Sure, they deleted the article, but they were reasonable enough to lift the ban. I'm sorry if the procedure I followed to try to negotiate with you guys was not what you expected.

I would much rather have you delete the Russet Noon article altogether than to continue with this conflict.
Once again, it is not my intention to antagonize you.
So, yeah, Artistic revolution is almost certainly Lady Sybilla.

ETA 5
: The hate shrine is now down from the Russet Noon site. It's been replaced with a paragraph about how "the wars have ceased" and the rest is now ostensibly about the fanfic again.

ETA 4-24 7:22am Tokyo time
: In case anyone was wondering how Lady Sybilla was taking the news about Peter David's community parody-in-progress, here's the reaction from her twitter:
# it's an honor even though it's a satire, because Peter David is a very seasoned writer
4 minutes ago from web

# many fanfic writers of the net will be uniting to write Potato Moon. The creator is comic book author Peter David
4 minutes ago from web

# let's hope this communal novel will inspire many more to come. I'd love to see a serious thriller or drama like this
7 minutes ago from web

# communal novels are a new genre, there are not many of them that I know of. I'm very curious to read Potato Moon.
8 minutes ago from web

# I'm very proud to announce that Russet Noon has inspired a very unique parody, Potato Moon. It's a communal novel
8 minutes ago from web
The Russet Noon website has also changed. It no longer makes mention of any "wars" whatsoever.

ETA 7: "You are invited to read our latest press release, "Lady Sybilla: The Darth Vader of Fandom."* It appears that Russet Noon has already achieved taboo status without having even been released yet. That's what happens when a Darth Vader figure like Lady Sybilla is created. And now she's found a worthy opponent: Peter David."

*That link goes to a c&p in my journal. To view the original (and give LS more hits) click here.

ETA 8: Her tweeting continues, c&ped here.

ETA 9: The first part of Potato Moon is up... I have a FanHistory page now, and actually I kind of like it, especially the graphic and its caption... and yes, my little lolcats, you can has more ONTD.

ETA 10: She just updated the Russet Noon site again (screencapped here), linking to the articles that appeared on Comicmix and IMDB. (Except her IMDB link actually goes here, where you have to scroll down halfway down the page the relevant blurb.)

ETA 11
: Peter David's Potato Moon has its own Wikipedia page! It is a thing of true beauty and you will never, ever guess who started it. But to avoid the situation that occurred the last time she wrote articles on Wikipedia, she's asked another user to edit the Potato Moon article for her. And he is (adding links to the Potato Moon blog entries, at least)! He just wants to know more about who AV Paranormal is. This should go well, I think.

ETA 12: She's linked to something on the Wall Street Journal site now. What the lemonfresh hell?

Just saw that the Potato Moon page is up for deletion, because Peter David's own article has enough information on it already. She just can't catch a break, can she?

Gad. I went away for 3-and-a-half days and look what happened.

This almost needs a new wank. It's drifted (wankdrift? is a word?) away from the proposed fic and into something different. It's no longer about someone idiotically trying to sell fan fiction. Now it's about someone who simply doesn't get it, no matter what it is, and no matter how many people tell her in so many different ways. It's less funny now and more sad.

Okay, well, it's still funny, sure, but for different reasons now.

I don't even understand what she's linking to on WSJ. It's just the ONTD post from ETA 9. Why did someone index/aggregate that on WSJ? And why is it in a subdomain devoted to Obama's first 100 days in office?

Just... what??? I don't understand anymore!

I noticed the WSJ think a few days ago. It's just indexed there and is not an actual WSJ post or article. The NYTs often links to random words within an article or Lede post that have zero to do with the article or topic at hand.

Nightscream's latest message to Ladysybilla on Wikipedia:
Regarding your April 26 message on my Talk Page, I'm not sure which article you were referring to that I write, but I indeed used David's blog entries on the Russet Moon matter as sources for the statement regarding his views on copyright infringement in the Public Persona section of his article. However, articles must summarize the most salient aspects of their subjects, rather than list every public matter in which they've participated, and I don't know that the Russet Noon/Potato Moon matter is noteworthy enough to mention in detail. Most of his public conflicts with others that are mentioned in that same section, after all, are not mentioned in great detail. Moreover, I'm not sure how opinion pieces on independent publishing sites that refer to him as a "right wing conservative" or a President Bush-type really constitutes another "side of the story", since this really has nothing to do with his views on copyright, and seems particularly odd when you consider that he's a liberal who criticized Bush many times (yet another thing heavily referenced in that section). I'm also not clear on how referring to his group parody novel as an "Inquisition" is worthy of mention, when there's really nothing being done with that novel that's much different than what you did with Russet Noon. It is, after all, just a parody. I wasn't even familiar with the Google matter or Author Shit List matter, and in investigating them, it does not appear that there are any sources to support those things that would be considered reliable by WP.

As for the External links matter, again, I don't think the matter is noteworthy enough that it bears such prominent mention in an EL section, especially since, as aforementioned, I already included it in the Public persona section. But if you have any other questions or suggestions, or any need any other tips on editing, just let me know. Thanks again. :-)
He's, like, too nice, this one. I think he may have even meant that smiley at the end non-sarcastically.

And, whoa, how did I miss this?

"This is a copy of an email sent to the support address from Lady Sybilla on April 21, 2009. I'm adding it here for the sake of open discussion. "
This update is regarding the copyright claim to the blood rose image used for the cover of the novel.

I am forwarding you the email I sent to Charli Siebert last night to try to verify that she does, in fact, own the copyright to this image.

In this email, I'm also requesting that she officially allows me to use the image for the cover. I didn't want to offer her money, because I don't want to offend her or make her feel like I'm trying to bribe her.

However, if she does respond to my email, I am willing to purchase a license from her if that's what she decides she wants. This, of course, after she does verify that she owns the copyright.

Something important I'd like to point out about this claim is that the statement in the image caption doesn't provide any U.S copyright official documents that prove the ownership of this image. I would really appreciate if you added a "citation needed" tag to this claim to clarify that this matter needs more evidence.

A link to an artist's site doesn't prove legal ownership of copyright, especially when considering how much this image is being used all over the internet. Also, Charli Siebert hasn't made any public statements regarding this issue, even though it is quite possible that she has already been contacted by people who have taken a personal interest in tainting the reputation of Russet Noon.

Please be kind enough to add the "citation needed" tag to this image caption, or, if you think it's best to create a sub section to address this dispute.

In regards to the copyright issue, however, I have repeatedly announced that it will be given away for free to people who actually want to read it. There will be no sales of the book whatsoever, so the sites that are still going on and on about the infringement are making false accusations.

Someone needs to remind this wacko that ALL fanfic is an infringement of copywrite.

The copywrite owners usually allow us to get away with it because 1) we love their characters so much, 2) we arent profeting and 3) it's additional publicity for their product.

They can stop us at any time and if she keeps this up much longer, S.Meyer is likley to make an exception and ban all Twilight fanfic (i dont think she could just bad one, it would be an all or nothing deal, surely? Any legal minds want to weigh in in this?). Then Lady Syb will have a whole fandom hating her.

Believe me when i say, you dont want the Twilight fandom hating you, those girls are truly scary (bit like Lady Syb herself, but i digress).

I doubt that ever entered her head, though. Which is odd consdering our hive mind, cant she hear my thoughts?

Who'da thunk you'd still be doing this a month after that first report on [info]sparklefield?

Just messing around the internet, and I ran into this. Sad to say, I remember both of them, first run. :-(

Copyright Infringement: Sid and Marty Krofft vs. McDonalds

Not exactly the same situation, but enlightening nonetheless.

Yeeeep. Still going.

So, did we ever figure out what she thought linking to the Wall Street Journal would do for her, or are we still just treading water in the sea of stupid waiting to go under the next big wave of fail?

(I ask because there's no way I can slog through all those comments.)

Wow, I spend a week moving house and I come back to this truly epic wank.

I have just spent all day reading through 15 pages of comments. I'm pretty sure I'll never be able to eat potatoes again. @.@

And in the end, what I really have to wonder is...who is she expecting to buy this, anyway? It's not like she's created a loyal fanbase eager to buy her work despite the oodles of Twilight fanfic already floating around the internet for free. In fact, it seems like she's just alienated anyone who might have any interest in this at all. :/

Nightscream's attempting to use Earth Logic on Lady S's usertalk page re: copyright infringement:

I'm sure you love those characters very much, and I hope writing the novel was rewarding, and may lead to fruitful future endeavors. But just so you know, copyright infringement does not require that you make money off the property that you're using. Legally, any time you use a copyrighted character or property without the permission of the owner (unless it's done for purposes of parody, or under a claim of Fair Use for journalistic purposes), it's copyright infringement. I don't know what accusations are being made by which sites, but that's the law. In any event, good luck to you. :-)

Somehow, I don't think that's going to get through to her...

Because I was bored and decided to cap the post where Lady Sybs originally posts in [info]twilightficrecs about Russet Noon, I discovered something rather interesting.

There are two Russet Noon accounts:
[info]russet_noon's account info is as follows:
Created on 2009-03-04 14:33:28 (#18943944), never updated

0 comments received, 0 comments posted

[info]russetnoon's account information, which has been oft presumed to be Lady Sybs's account, is as follows:
Created on 2009-03-25 20:58:52 (#19237586), last updated 2009-03-25

0 comments received, 1 comment posted

So either Lady Sybs forgot the account password to [info]russet_noon, (and perhaps more recently [info]russetnoon) since no one is commenting on the Comment to be added post, and [info]russetnoon has not really done anything to add to their profile information) or this is some attempt to throw off plucky detectives, or this may be an attempt at sockpuppetry. Or it could be someone else entirely but there is not much evidence at present to really contradict or support this.

I have capped both user profiles
You decide.

Sybilla, since you're reading this: How are you paying to publish Russet Noon? The cheapest price at Lulu.com for a 384-page book is $8.26--for printing costs alone, on lower-grade paper, without shipping. Shipping from Lulu.com to you will cost you, and shipping to each of the recipients will cost you again. That's at least $12 per book. Exactly how many readers will you be able to buy at $12 apiece?
