The Russet Doom Saga, Part IV
In Part III, we saw what happened when Lady Sybilla tried to tangle with the Twilight Lexicon mods for the last time (they banned her), and watched in awe as Wikipedia users worked "around the clock" to get her Russet Noon article deleted. You can still find "The Wikipedia Wars" linked on the Russet Noon website, but you'll have to scroll down past...

The FanHistory Wars.
A long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away....

Artistic revolution (who, for reasons which will become blatantly obvious, is a suspected sockpuppet of Lady Sybilla) edited the shit out of the Russet Noon fanhistory page. Artistic revolution has a pretty one-track mind, it would appear. Or two-track, if you count Lady Sybilla as a separate topic.

In the midst of all those edits, there was no shortage of information about me, Sybilla's own favorite "stalkarazzo." (I know I'm her favorite, she says so herself on the Russet Noon website.) The following information is culled from the Revision as of 00:27, 21 April 2009 version of the page.
Although Caito posted the email text on one of her many Journalfen pages, her only acknowledgment of Sybilla's concerns was: "I'm totally over this email business. I have a spam filter and I intend to use it. If someone wants to continue discussing this shiz, she can do so in the comments like everybody else." Strange reaction given that Caito's Whois record for her site openly discloses her gmail address:
At this point, Artistic revolution somehow thought it was appropriate to include my mailing address and contact information. Yes, in the middle of the article for Russet Noon. But that's not all! She did go on. I bolded my favorite parts!
More recently, Caito provided us with a video example of how the attention-whoring for which she mocks Sybilla is more contagious than a disease. Ironically, while she spends her valuable time making fun of the ''Russet Noon'' author for trying to exploit Stephenie Meyer's popularity, Caito, too, seems to be riding the wave of the ''Russet Noon'' obsession. And she does so quite gracefully. If it weren't for Caito, ''Russet Noon'' would have never achieved taboo status.

... On April 3, 2009, LadySybilla emailed Caito and asked her to stop her "online stalking activities." On this email, Sybilla warned, "If you don't, I will notify as many administrators as I have to until they take action." Sybilla then contacted the Journalfen technical support team to ask how she could contact an administrator in order to report libelous accusations posted by some of their users. But, instead of responding to Sybilla's concerns, the JournalFen support team (if, in fact, there is one) forwarded a copy of the email to Caito. This incident may or may not prompt internet users to wonder about the legitimacy of Journalfen. Is Journalfen an actual company? If it is, who are the tech support staff and/or administrators behind it?

... Judging by the look of things, it won't be Sybilla who will be profiting off of ''Russet Noon'' sales after all. Let's see what happens when Caito and her BFFs at Twilight Lexicon get their hands on a copy of the novel in September.
All that has since been nuked from the actual FanHistory page, and replaced with more evenhanded material. People here at FW went a little flaily for a bit, as a software snafu made it appear as though FH mod Sidewinder had been the one to add my personal info when she'd really just meant to take it down.*

Then the mods brought the hurt down on Artistic revolution, who has been banned from editing the wiki for two whole weeks! She's really sorry, though, guys. Please stop throwing stones at her, and let her catapult boulders at others in peace.

But it's not like Artistic revolution has been the only one tooling with it, either. Some anons got in and tweaked it ever so slightly, like changing the story summary simply to "OH JOHN RINGO NO!" Editing the Russet Noon article is temporarily locked to admins, due to anon vandalizing and a neutrality dispute.

Personal notes:
  1. I do not know what end anyone would hope to achieve by posting my address.
  2. I'm not BFFs or even BFs or even just Fs with the TwiLex mods, but I sure do like them more than I like Lady Sybilla.
  3. I have no clue how I would stand to profit from anything having to do with Russet Noon.
  4. I have no idea who Lee Thomas even is.
*Aside to FanHistory folks: Thanks. I really appreciate what you did. Do me one more solid? I did respond to Lady Sybilla's concerns about my "accusations", but I guess it got lost in the epic wave of comments. Like I said before, Lady Sybilla is welcome to come engage me in comments, but as far as I know she has yet to do so. Muchos gracias.

ETA
: Artistic revolution rides forth on teal deer to appeal to Laura's professionalism.

ETA 2: Laura responds!

ETA 3: The Russet Noon website is now basically a hate shrine dedicated to me and FH mod Sidewinder, complete with Photoshopped screencaps of me interacting with people I've never actually interacted with. Oh, and also my contact information.

You know, I'm starting to get the feeling that she doesn't take criticism very well.

ETA
4: From Artistic revolution's usertalk page:
I'm not interested in antagonizing you. You have been objective, but I still have to insist that Sidewinder, whoever she is, hasn't been. She might not have the same IP address as Caito, but her editing patterns are dubious. I have listed the evidence on my website because I'm blocked from doing so here. If I'm not allowed to edit the article, then at least Sidewinder should also be prevented from tampering with it any further.

All in all, as I said before, I'm not interested in antagonizing you. Based on your reasons for why Wikipedia blacklisted FH, I know you can understand how I feel in regards to Russet Noon. I have seen that your procedures reflect professionalism. This is why I appealed to that.

I sincerely apologized to both you and Tikatu, but never received a reply. At least at Wikipedia they lifted the ban. Sure, they deleted the article, but they were reasonable enough to lift the ban. I'm sorry if the procedure I followed to try to negotiate with you guys was not what you expected.

I would much rather have you delete the Russet Noon article altogether than to continue with this conflict.
Once again, it is not my intention to antagonize you.
So, yeah, Artistic revolution is almost certainly Lady Sybilla.

ETA 5
: The hate shrine is now down from the Russet Noon site. It's been replaced with a paragraph about how "the wars have ceased" and the rest is now ostensibly about the fanfic again.

ETA 4-24 7:22am Tokyo time
: In case anyone was wondering how Lady Sybilla was taking the news about Peter David's community parody-in-progress, here's the reaction from her twitter:
# it's an honor even though it's a satire, because Peter David is a very seasoned writer
4 minutes ago from web

# many fanfic writers of the net will be uniting to write Potato Moon. The creator is comic book author Peter David
4 minutes ago from web

# let's hope this communal novel will inspire many more to come. I'd love to see a serious thriller or drama like this
7 minutes ago from web

# communal novels are a new genre, there are not many of them that I know of. I'm very curious to read Potato Moon.
8 minutes ago from web

# I'm very proud to announce that Russet Noon has inspired a very unique parody, Potato Moon. It's a communal novel
8 minutes ago from web
The Russet Noon website has also changed. It no longer makes mention of any "wars" whatsoever.

ETA 7: "You are invited to read our latest press release, "Lady Sybilla: The Darth Vader of Fandom."* It appears that Russet Noon has already achieved taboo status without having even been released yet. That's what happens when a Darth Vader figure like Lady Sybilla is created. And now she's found a worthy opponent: Peter David."

*That link goes to a c&p in my journal. To view the original (and give LS more hits) click here.

ETA 8: Her tweeting continues, c&ped here.

ETA 9: The first part of Potato Moon is up... I have a FanHistory page now, and actually I kind of like it, especially the graphic and its caption... and yes, my little lolcats, you can has more ONTD.

ETA 10: She just updated the Russet Noon site again (screencapped here), linking to the articles that appeared on Comicmix and IMDB. (Except her IMDB link actually goes here, where you have to scroll down halfway down the page the relevant blurb.)

ETA 11
: Peter David's Potato Moon has its own Wikipedia page! It is a thing of true beauty and you will never, ever guess who started it. But to avoid the situation that occurred the last time she wrote articles on Wikipedia, she's asked another user to edit the Potato Moon article for her. And he is (adding links to the Potato Moon blog entries, at least)! He just wants to know more about who AV Paranormal is. This should go well, I think.

ETA 12: She's linked to something on the Wall Street Journal site now. What the lemonfresh hell?

I brings potatoes for sharing

So there's a serious amount of not funny and uncool shit going on at the moment, so I'm bringing a potato recipe. A russet recipe. Cook some russets for grate justice!

This recipe comes from my late friend Lewis. We used red potatoes, but substituting russet potatoes would be okay. We also cooked with the Force, so the measurements aren't exact, but it will come out great, I swear.

Lewis's Balsamic Potatoes:

Ingredients:
russet potatoes
balsamic vinegar
raw peeled garlic cloves
1/2 chopped yellow onion
kosher salt
cracked black pepper
preheat oven to 325 degrees F

Cut enough potatoes to make one layer in a 13x9 inch glass dish. Cut the potatoes into pieces smaller than an inch square so they'll cook quickly.
On the stove, begin a balsamic vinegar reduction; in a skillet, bring 1/2 to 3/4 cup of balsamic vinegar to a boil, then reduce to low heat and cook until the vinegar begins to thicken. Add the potatoes and cook for about 10 minutes, until they absorb vinegary goodness. Transfer the potatoes and vinegar to the glass dish. (If there is not enough vinegar to coat the potatoes, just add more.) Add peeled raw garlic, either uncut or cut into large chunks. I love garlic, so I add a lot. Add chopped onion. Season with kosher salt and cracked black pepper. Place in the oven at 325 degrees. Remove from oven when potatoes begin to brown. Serve and enjoy!

I, too, have to add to the pile of people snarling with rage -- not specifically because of her posting your location/contact info, since Japan is pretty remote to get harassed there -- but by her nasty and oh-so-sly accusations of pedophilia. (Not just pedophilia, LESBIAN pedophilia!) I'm not worried about her getting hold of your contact info; I would worry about her getting hold of your employer's, because as totally irrational and vindictive as she has proven herself to be, I really would not put it past her to try something with them. (If they spoke English, which they probably don't.)

Leaving srs bzness aside for a moment, can I just say I sympathize with you over this? I remember once I got labelled a 'pedo lover' for arguing that no, it is not okay for people to take baseball bats and go to other people's houses and try to beat them to death, even if they are on the sex offender list. That was an equally fun display of crazy!

They're not on the same continent, but I'm sure they're the same! On top of being everyone on the internet, she must have a teleportation device!

Heathus Christ on a cracker, this is getting ridiculous. I haven't seen this dense a collision of fail, stupid, and batshit in one person before, and I've been mousing around here since '04.

[info]caito, I feel for you, truly I do. This person is obviously deranged, as she seems to hold you entirely responsible for some supposed Internet witch hunt seeing as no one would be pointing and laughing at the stupidity she posts publicly on the Internet if you hadn't pointed it out to us!

This is really an historical moment, as she has somehow brought together sworn enemies--TwiHards, Lee Goldberg, FanHistory, and us of course--in some kind of unholy alliance. It's like the Borg teaming up with the Federation, the Klingons, and the Romulans against some massive crystalline entity of batshit that eats everything in its path leaving nothing behind but scattered debris and screencaps.

Ahh well, at least we got some nummy recipes out of it.

Someone tell me why I'm not surprised by this. I noticed it on a search for "Russet Noon" earlier today, so it's probably just been created since her sockpuppeting attempts on FH have failed and clearly MySpace is the only place where people can't ban her.
I've got a screen cap of it already.

I can only suspect she'll be doing her pontificating from there from here on out.

More plucky detectiving
[info]jkefka
2009-04-22 04:18 am UTC (link)
I'm going to go ahead and venture "not troll."

I've found a bit more of her stuff. She has had some internet presence recently, most of it vanished shortly after the first russet noon wank report. Google cache has saved a few bits of it, and I'm not going to link it here because they include her real name and some personal info. Basically, there was a fair amount going on with her as AVparanormal. In the last year it looks like she was genuinely working as a low-profile paranormal events fan, interviewing ghost hunters and writing about chupacabras and ghosts. All of that outright vanished when Russet Noon happened.

However, it stopped being updated online around December 08....when she suddenly pops up in the LA Skeptics meetup groups, which I also won't link to because it has her picture, the same one on the AV paranormal blogspot (which is now only available on googlecache).

Ding.

Something happened there, drove her away from her paranormal stuff. A few short months later, during which time she is extremely quiet, Russet Noon pops up.

So, I'm going to go ahead and guess that she's the real deal. Small-time internet paranormal reporter who took a flying leap somewhere along the way and came down in the Twilight fandom with no understanding of the concepts of fanfic, copyright or boundaries.

Did I mention the crazy?

Also crazy.

[info]darkecology is wise. Make potato recipes, not war.

RUSSET Potato Pierogies
(labour-intensive but OMG yummy)

The Dough (this is actually pizza dough):

- 2/3 cups warm water
- 1 pinch sugar
- 1 packet dry yeast
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
- 2 cups white flour, plus more if needed
- 1 tsp salt.

Put the water, sugar and yeast in a large bowl and let it sit until the yeast is foamy.

Mix in the salt, flour and oil. Blend with a spoon until it forms a dough, then knead on a floured surface until the dough is smooth and elastic (about 10 minutes.)

Drizzle a bit of olive oil on the outside of the dough and turn it to coat the outside. Cover with a damp cloth and put the dough somewhere warm to rise.

When it has doubled in size, punch it down. It's now ready to use.

(If you're using this as pizza dough, it makes 2 large pizzas. Oil the dough before you put toppings on and the crust will get crispy in the oven. Bake pizzas at 425 F for 20 minutes...I think. My recipe is vague on this point.)

The Filling:

- 2 large or 3 medium potatoes, peeled and cut in pieces to let them boil faster
- 3 Tbsp butter
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tsp salt, plus more to taste
- black pepper to taste
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- 3 cups sliced mushrooms

Boil the potatoes in salted water until very tender. Drain them, then mash them with 1 Tbsp of butter and all the milk.

Put on a large pot of water to boil now. You'll use it to cook the pierogies in later.

Melt 2 Tbsp butter in a skillet and saute the garlic for minute (do not brown it.) Add the mushrooms and cook for five minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste. Pour everything into the mashed potatoes and mix well.

Cut the pizza dough into 8 equal parts, then form into balls.

On a floured surface, roll each ball into a 5 inch circle. Put a dollop of the potato/mushroom mixture in the middle. Wet the edges of the dough with water or milk. Fold the circle in half with the potato-dollop in the middle, and seal the edges of the pierogi well (press with a fork--you really don't want these things leaking later.)

Drop the pierogies into the boiling water one at a time (because they puff up and they're HUGE) and cook for five minutes, or until done (they float to the top when they're getting close to finished.)

Serve with sour cream and sliced onions fried in butter, if desired.

More blah blah blah on the FH talk page.

As for the bloody rose image, I have been doing some research and have found that it's being used and edited by people all over the internet. I visited the site of the artist who allegedly owns the copyright to it and will contact her to ask for evidence of the actual copyright, since it is very easy to photoshop a copyright watermark on a picture. Once I verify that she does, in fact, own the copyright to the image, I will be more than happy to negotiate a licensing use for the Russet Noon cover. This process will take time, though, so all I ask is that my dispute to the claim in the image caption is allowed to remain there until I can settle this issue. I will also delete the Fan History Wars page as soon as I get a chance, since I don't want to waste any more energy on playing the fandom wank game. Thanks very much.

This wank definitely needs more recipes. This is one I got from my roommate, who got it from her friend's Italian grandmother. I've made it, it is delicious (with the sauce of your choice, of course- I like it with a good tomato vodka sauce).

Russet Potato Gnocchi

Ingredients:
Russet potatoes (however many you want)
Flour (a lot)

Peel and boil your potatoes. Once they're nice and mashable, strain the water out and mash in a bowl.

On some clean counter space, dust with flour. You'll really want this later.

Back in the bowl, start adding flour and mixing it in. It's easiest to do this with your hands, so you'll want to wait until the potatoes have cooled off. Keep adding flour and kneading it in until it doesn't stick to you any more (note: this will work best in a cool space, so keep out of direct sunlight and such).

Now's the fun part. Taking small bits of the dough, roll it out into thin strips, about a centimeter or two in diameter. Press flat with the prongs of a fork, and cut into square-ish pieces (it's not an exact science). Continue until you have all the pieces you want, or the dough is gone. It stores well in the freezer, so you can always come back to it later.

Take your freshly cut bits of gnocchi and put them into boiling water. You'll know they're done when they start floating. The result should be chewy, potato-ey deliciousness. :D

I so do not know if this has been posted yet. I don't remember seeing it, but if it has been posted, let me know, yes/y?

Seems Lady of the Batshit has her own author page on FH.

I've capped it and uploaded it here.

I'm kind of really amused by this bit (html bits added in by me):

"An individual covered by or significantly related to this article, LadySybilla, has edited Fan History as Artistic revolution. This user's editing has included this article."

And this, did We know this:

First-Prize Winner of The Robert apRoberts English Honors Essay Prize in 2000 at Cal State Northridge ...Prize is an annual award given to the English Honors student whose thesis is judged... best submitted during that... year. The title of Glorianna's thesis is "A Study of the Gothic in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Toni Morrison's Beloved... available at the Oviatt Library at Cal State Northridge.

I can't for the life of me remember what her thesis was called or about. In fact, didn't someone find out what it was called then someone else find a thesis by Lady of the Batshit Glorianna that was of a different title?

Lordy, I'm confusing myself. Caito, you're getting more than a postcard.

Hot Potato Salad
[info]tephra
2009-04-22 07:32 am UTC (link)
Super simple potato recipe.

Grandma Beaudoin's Hot Potato Salad
(All amounts are approximate, it's potato salad after all.)

6-8 cups potatoes, peeled and cut in chunks/large dice
4 eggs, hard boiled, chopped
1 onion (small to medium) diced small
1 can stewed tomatoes (15 oz), drained* and cut into chunks
1 cup mayonnaise
salt and pepper to taste

Boil potatoes until cooked through. Drain and do not rinse. Add all other ingredients to hot potatoes and season to taste.

Told you it was simple. :)

I've been meaning to try it with some crisp bacon crumbled in, but haven't managed to yet as our preferred black pepper encrusted bacon never lasts long enough to be considered an ingredient in anything. :D

*Save the drained juice for other recipes. Or use it to make a nice Bloody Mary.
