And now for something completely different. Thoughts on yaoi.
Yanked from [info]wank_report

Springjack starts a discussion over at TV Tropes.org about Nakama. He doesn't like the term. He thinks it should be "Fellowship." He doesn't care that the site has been unable to resolve this issue in the past. HE IS SURE HE CAN CONVINCE THEM!

His main argument seems to be that if you google the word you get a yaoi fansite and a lot of steak houses. He doesn't like the "Japanophile" term because it doesn't fit like a glove.

Springjack argues with every bit of semantics because "Tropes aren't a second language. They're slang." And when people try to meet him part way it's not good enough. And he continues to rail and lecture no matter what anyone says.

They put it to a vote and even though it is voted down Mr. Springjack can't STFU. And we're only at page 3 of 12. It devolves into discussions of "ohana" which Springjack suggested as a joke, but people seem to like. And then about kneepit vs kneebutt.

Springjack wanders off and the debate over a closed issue limps on. O_O

I'm too scared to click any of the links. I have things I need to get done in the next week.

Springjack Says...

"Is it really just the Japanophiles online right now or what?"

"Tropes shouldn't be a second language."

"I am not a Japanese media hater."

One of these statements is not true. Can you at home figure out which one it is?

He'll fight tooth and nail to replace this Japanese word with its English equivalent, but don't worry! He doesn't hate Japanese media! He just wants the trope name to be more immediately comprehensible! You know, like "Ikea Erotica," "Giant Space Flea," or "Jump the Shark!"

Incidentally, an HTML note: both links in the third paragraph link to the "fits like a glove" comment.

Anyway, this is English we're talking about, isn't this what it does? "Oh hey! I don't have a word that means precisely that, and Japanese over there does! *Yoink*"

Ah, finally some TVTropes wank makes it to FW! I've been waiting for this day. They wank a lot over there.

Anyway, I seem to remember there was someone else with "Jack" in his name that was on a one-man crusade to rid the wiki of Japanese trope names. I wonder if that guy got a new account or if this is an entirely different weeaboo-hating Jack. (... and I just tried to use the wiki markup for italics there, for a minute. Good thing I caught it before I hit post.)

So from only skimming the threads out of fear I'd end up jumping around that site all night and getting irrationally irritated at whoever's been editing the FMA stuff over there since last I checked about half the stuff mentioned about it was inaccurate, what I gather from our dear friend Springjack is that he's upset that he has to read the explanation for a term on a site devoted to explaining terms.

. . .

I'm reminded of how on the Unofficial Guidebook To The Virtue Verse (guidebook to the characters of the Virtue server of City of Heroes in wiki form) there was *huge* wank from a guy who wanted to delete the "magical girl" category because he couldn't see any difference between that and a character who "has the in-game origin 'Magic' " and "is female in-game". Basically, he hasn't heard of a genre, so it can't be popular.

Gotta say, I've always kind of agreed that "nakama" is not a mystical untranslatable word and that keeping it untranslated just seems silly (natural-sounding translations > literal translations and "let's just romanize it and add a long translation note")

But I don't frequent TVTropes, and that guy seems like he's being a dick, so yeah.

...but Nakama is kind of catchy. Fellowship isn't. It's also just a tiny smidge more specific in its use than fellowship. And it's a central Japanese cultural concept, so while it shows up in Western media it's not a trope the way it is in Japanese media, so using the English equivalent just doesn't work as well.

Ha! Oh, yes, there's naming wank on the entire site. It basically falls into two categories;

1) Wank over names with Japanese names and conventions.

2) Wank over it being named after some kind really obscure character.

(When it's both it really gets ugly. Like "Sasami Syndrome".

To be honest, the biggest stickler for me is that they have a page for Christopher Nolan's Batman films called "The Dark Knight Trilogy".
