Entry tags:entitlement, fandom: harry potter, i wanted to be wanked, jkr doesn't know harry potter like i do, look how much i don't care, my education let me show you it, potter fandom will not be outwanked!, spoilers- noooo! you bitch! you bitch!!!, taking it too seriously, wanking inside the house, why are you even reading these books?, yet another entitled hp fucktard

JKR owes us revised editions of HP books!
A "slightly disgruntled fan" wrote an 80,000-word essay about everything he disliked in the books and wants JKR to rewrite HP in accordance with his wishes.

An excerpt from the essay:

Destiny Unfulfilled is designed to convince as many fans as possible that a revised edition is called for, so they can begin haranguing Ms. Rowling (politely and with restraint, of course). Never underestimate the power of peon pressure!
Creative writing students will likely also benefit from reading this book, as the careful analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of someone else's writing often helps us spot those same traits in our own work. Finally, students of composition can use this as an example of argumentative writing, as well as a jumping off point for school writing assignments, by either agreeing with or countering points made here-in.

Then he went to The Leaky Lounge to brag about his essay and to convince the posters here to beg JKR to revise the books.

An excerpt from his first post:

I do have an M.A. in English, but I feel my main qualifications for writing the book are that I'm a (slightly disgruntled) fan of the series, and I've put a lot of effort into analyzing the seven books. To be clear, this is not a religious diatribe, political axe-grinding, nor do I attempt to take Ms. Rowling to school on who should have fallen in love with whom in the series. (I am *not* a kook! Heh.) Rather, this is an examination of issues like the role of a protagonist, the writer's contract with her readers, characterization, shaggy dog resolutions, and so forth.

The critique makes claims such as that Harry fails to fulfill his role as a protagonist and, ultimately, ceases to be even a necessary character. Hermione could easily have made it through Book 7 without Harry and Ron tagging along after her.... That seems like a fairly major problem, when the title character turns out to be unnecessary.

I hope we can make enough noise to get Ms. Rowling's attention. We aren't asking for more books in the series, just that she fulfill the promises she made to us: that the books would star Harry as the hero and protagonist, that the books wouldn't be episodic, and so forth.

"QUOTE(calliet2b4g @ May 2 2009, 07:07 AM)
I honestly highly doubt that JK would ever rewrite her books, and no one could ever force that duty upon her...

I agree that it seems doubtful. I only object to the use of the word "force." As for requesting a revised edition, begging, pleading, and praying for one, I continue to feel that it's acceptable for a fan to do so. As long as we're able to accept being ignored or rejected, then we're operating within our rights under the Magna Carta.

One tendency I see in this thread, though, is to treat work as the worst possible thing in the world. I realize this was Harry's attitude, but one of the things that writers do is to write. Many of them, as I understand it, write because that's what they love to do. Often, the reward for a job well done is to be given more work to do.

And to paraphrase anonymous, all progress in this world is done by talented people at the prodding of unreasonable people.

L. Frank Baum wrote a dozen or so Oz books, and sometimes he complained that children kept asking for more ... but he kept on writing them, because he had a desire to please his fans. J.R.R. Tolkien, if not for the prodding of friends and fans, would probably have spent much of his life developing the languages of Middle Earth, instead of writing Lord of the Rings. Enid Blyton added volumes to several of her series at the prodding of her fans.

Thus, while asking for a revised edition is certainly a bit different, it isn't all that different, especially if we agree to call them (all three of them) alternate versions."

You won't be alone. And as for this...

...we're operating within our rights under the Magna Carta.

... then that's as much as to say, for an American, no rights whatsoever. Since ...

"...we have also granted to all freemen of our kingdom, for us and our heirs for ever, all the underwritten liberties..."

I'm betting that the UK government would still construe the following phrase, "to be had and held by them and their heirs," as requiring UK nationality. Oh, there might be some tussle over this if the situation went as far as the EU Court of Human Rights, and of course QEII did give the US a little piece of Runnymede, but --

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, sorry, I couldn't keep it going...

Oh, sweet Buddha on a pogo stick, the entitlement. It's fabulous, unbelievable; incredible. In the old sense of the word.

Oh, come on. Everyone knows that authors don't write to make a living. They're either driven by the desire to please their fans, or they're megalomaniac bitches who get off on messing with their fans by daring to write what they want instead of following the fans' (unified and wholly justified) whishes.

He should not have brought Baum into this. Stay away from my Oz books, bitch! And he majorly missed the point. Baum kept writing Oz books because 1: as you said, he had to make a living, and 2: He was a very kindhearted man who could not turn down the requests of guileless six and seven year olds for further adventures of Dorothy and Co. Author continuing a book series to please small children who wrote pleading, earnest letters=/= author rewriting a book series to please a bitchy, entitled nominally adult fan with an 80,000 word document complaining about how terrible her books are.

Often, the reward for a job well done is to be given more work to do.

*headdesk**headdesk**headdesk*

I'm sure working artists of every kind around the world just LOVE it when they're told that rather than fair compensation for fair work, they should be rewarded with more work.

Especially when that additional work has nothing to do with their personal creative vision and everything to do with someone else's whiny sense of entitlement. I mean, sure, many artists get by on commissions, but isn't the ultimate goal to have your own ideas sell well - like, say, millions and millions of copies? And then you don't have to depend on commissions anymore? I think JKR might be past that point.

I'll bite on requesting a revised edition. In fact, I'll draft the letter here and now.

Dear JKR,

I request that you rewrite the Harry Potter books in a Choose Your Own Adventure style, covering every possible character decision and ending you can think of. Not because I am dissatisfied with the way the books turned out, but because it will be that much more amusing to see the disgruntled "fans" complain about how you are doing them a grave disservice by not catering to their whims, when the book allows them to cater to their own whims to their hearts' desires.

Yrs,
An amused fan

P.S. If you do write the CYOA version, would you also consider sending me and other amused fans copies of the outraged hate mail?
