The Greying of Fandom is Mysterious and Inexplicable
Meta wank of the sweetest kind. 2010 Readercon is being advertised as "This IS your father's con". Needless to say, this is not met with huzzahs. Catherynne M. Valente proposes an alternative to the 2010 Readercon--a gathering of fans at her island place. The man who has singlehandedly run programming for Readercon for 20 years immediately responds with you are wrong and escalates from there, with you are very young or possibly foreign, and my personal favorite, you have to have a score of at least 790 on the analytical section of the GRE to do programming for Readercon. Many people laugh at him. Eric Van says he is no longer responding to stupid comments, and then copy&pastes his everyone IMPORTANT loved us comment everywhere he can find.

Meanwhile, Readercon backtracks quickly.

And for your tasting pleasure, now with added name-calling and objectification of the young, female fans!

eta: Obviously Eric Van could not delegate programming decisions, because no one else gets a 790 on the analytical section of the GRE. But why not use a computer program, someone suggests. Eric gently explains that the "combinatorics problem" is far too complicated for a simple computer program.

I'm not understanding the appeal of the "your father's con" angle. The present has handheld games, Thai restaurants, and skinny jeans. I refuse to go back.

Yes! I could finally get some use out of that stupid test.

Autism means you cannot make eye contact with the person on the other side of a computer screen in a different location. Trufax.

Michael Dirda and Peter Straub? That's IT? And I'm not familiar with Dirda so much, but to me Peter Straub always read like absolutely every generic '80s horror novel you could pick up at the grocery store, smooshed into one.

You know, as an older fan, I'm kind of sad that something that presented itself as olderfan friendly had to generate wank. There is a hell of a lot of "any fan older than 30 is a creep" prejudice in fandom, a little "get off my lawn" isn't unreasonable. And I wish that a male-oriented fandom event didn't automatically get equated with sexism, though obviously this wank fell into it. There are female oriented fandom events (hi there Y-con) where, despite the world being half male, the attendees are overwhelmingly women.

There are hundreds of cons that are appealing to the younger than 50 crowd, why pick on the one that allows people who like to sit and listen to one person at a time and not have sidetracking conversations. As for not having wireless at an event where most of the attendees are grandfathers...

It's too bad this turned into sexism. This is a rare and unusual con appealing to a small, very underrepresented demographic.

Most of the convention I go to are the larger ones. They are the ones that I get paid to be at to sit at a table and take money for the talent. I get most of my evenings off so I can see the con then if there is a con going on (NYCC and SDCC come to mind for rolling up the carpet early. DragonCon for a show that never dies until the clock chimes on Monday).

I have been to these smaller older cons in my youth and honestly this sort of attitude is as old as the hills. The sad thing is that the numbers keep decreasing for attendance at these conventions. I hear about being inclusive or how do we get the younger fans but when presented with what they need to do, they don't want to do it because it is not interesting to them. Which is too bad because an entire segment of fandom is going to go the way of the dodo.

I agree with Velvet Mace that this was an opportunity for dialogue and real discussion that quickly went into the quagmire.

Combine an uncommunicative single-handed manager, twenty years of Geek Social Fallacies reinforcement, a big helping of unconscious white male middle-class privilege, moderate commercial success, and an incredibly anti-descriptive name: all leads to wank!

It all would be less annoying if they called it IndustryCon or WriterCon or SFPublisherCon. Readercon implies a focus on, yanno, readers.

Frankly, no one came off looking golden in this one.

It took a lot of kicking and screaming to get Archon in St. Louis to realize that this anime shit was pretty popular with the younger crowd (who more importantly WOULD PAY ADMISSION to see stuff related to it), but they've finally wised up. As we pointed out, "if you don't do it someone else certainly will, and you'll have lost 'em forever".

As a side note, I think there will have been at least three anime cons in the Gateway City this year. :)

As part of the graying crowd, our costuming group was sitting around last evening trying to come up with panel ideas for the upcoming Archon, and as a joke I suggested "Pimp My CPAP". Five of us immediately offered our units as examples. :)

What the everloving fuck? What side does [Unknown LJ tag] think s/h/it is arguing for, and in what universe is linking to a pic of a random, possibly underage teenage girl as an illustration of...what, her attractiveness or lack of attractiveness or simple youth?...appropriate? Just, what the FUCK. Is this irony, or just epic grossness?

Also, is that a Radiohead reference? Because if so, that's kind of badly deployed.

Oh, Readercon. For three years I've thought of it as a place to get indie and small press books, to find out about fresh new authors, to meet YA and upcoming authors who don't get enough panel time at big cons. My Readercon is young and female.

Then again, I got it that way by avoiding any panel with a majority of middle-aged or older men, or with Eric Van on it. A friend and I dubbed Eric Van "Mr. Shut Up" during my first Readercon because I couldn't remember his name, but every time he opened his mouth, I hissed "Shuuuuuuut uuuuuuuuup."

The man loves the sound of his own voice. Loooooves it. Loves it above the love of any woman, any man, or any shiny red Corvette. On panels where he was the moderator, he assumed that all these people were sitting so intently waiting to hear his pretty, pretty voice, and not to hear, say, John Crowley. He may be a lovely man in person, but I loathe him as a moderator or a panelist, I cringe at the mention of his name, I fill my time between onset of The Voice and my escape with fantasies of duct tape and staple guns.

So it's not surprising that online, he's letting the pretty, pretty words flow, utterly deaf to anything anyone else may say that suggests they aren't as in love with his words as he is.

Eric! Shuuuuuuuuuut uuuuuuuuuuuup.

Personally, my favorite part of this was when Eric said, "It's not that there's no one else good enough - it's just that there's no one else good enough!"

Keep digging, Eric. Keep digging deep.

I'm also impressed that CMV still wants to go to Readercon 22. After that little sexist dalliance, I'd have been all like, "Fuck you, I'm starting my own damn con." Then again, I'm a bit of an asshole, so don't mind me.

I don't know, the very con tagline makes me unable to get past the mental image of an army of bearded grey my-dad-lookalikes shuffling about, smoking pipes, and wanting to be left alone so they can read or watch some good sci-fi. Since my dad is made of awesome and is also responsible for introducing me to sf&f, cheap horrors, and comics, my mental cook-up sounds pretty cool, which makes me all the more sad that the actual thing sounds not so super.

Eric gently explains that the "combinatorics problem" is far too complicated for a simple computer program.

Okay, I realize it's been a couple of years since I ran away from college with my Computer Science degree, but as I recall the average scheduling algorithm was something covered in the sophomore-level algorithms course. "Insanely complicated" just means you have to spend longer writing more code, and it will take more processing power to finish. I'd love to see what criterion he's using that make it THAT complicated.

Honestly, just hand it to a room of programmers at an ACM competition. The nerds will salivate, and slave over it for hours until the most efficient algorithm wins.
