Slash Kirk and Spock Together For Great Social Justice!
As reported by a mousie on wank_report...

...a mousie who wisely notes this eventually devolves into unfunny business. But I'm going to omit those bits. Tra, la, la; pay no attention to the wank behind the curtain. Stick close to me, my pretties.

SEE (Social Equality Effort) is:
[A] pending non-profit organization that advocates the fair and balanced representation of sexual minorities (that being women and LGBT persons) in the mainstream media, specifically focusing on the genres of Science Fiction and Fantasy. Currently, SEE only has one project: SEE Trek Love.
What is SEE Trek Love? It's a campaign to convince the creators of the new Star Trek to make Ye Olde Grand-Daddy of slash pairings, Kirk/Spock, into a canon relationship. To this end, SEE has a petition for you to sign.

The petition is pimped on a few slash communities, including on LJ's [info]newtrekslash by [info]tinuelena, where the response starts out both civil and quite supportive of the spirit of the petition.

The reaction to the petition itself, however, boils down to:
Why push for Kirk/Spock instead of LGBT in general?
Why split Uhura/Spock when there're plenty of other guys in the series to slash?

[info]envyofthestage thinks s/he sees the logic and attempts to explain: Kirk/Spock is the classic pairing, and besides, the writers only invented Spock/Uhura to discourage the Kirk/Spock slashers.

Oddly, when asked, [info]envyofthestage fails to provide a direct citation to validate that second claim.

However, the OP [info]tinuelena shows up to say: Good golly, Kirk/Spock would be the most prominent choice, but really, we'd be thrilled if the writers included any LGBT romance--even though they're totes using Uhura to discourage Kirk/Spock slashers.

[info]tinuelena also addresses the question of why Kirk/Spock MUST BE, and it boils down to: I don't personally get Spock/Uhura, therefore it doesn't exist. The resulting (rather lovely) thread includes such highlights as [info]darkrosetiger and [info]abydosangel wondering How come, if you say it's OOC for Spock to be dating a student, it's not OOC for him to be screwing his commanding officer?

[info]tinuelena blames everyone else for all the wank, and [info]daniela_lynx again repeats the rumour that The writers are putting the "break" on Kirk/Spock! I totes read it somewhere. Like, recently.

And again, no one can find a link to support this. (Um...have any wankas ever come across this? Now I'm curious.)

[info]yahtzee63 takes things tip-toeing toward unfunny, but [info]tinuelena saves the day (temporarily; no link provided, because things turn ugly right after this) by saying "I didn't come here to discuss ships." When nam_jai points out that, dur, she already has, [info]tinuelena claims that doesn't count, because "obviously it's fruitless to attempt any sort of logical debate here, so I've washed my hands of it."

But, my pretties, read the comments no further than that. Tra, la, la.

Edited to add: SEETrekLove has adjusted their petition to remove the demand for Kirk/Spock. Now, they simply ask for a LGBT pairing in New Trek. Thank you to [info]the_taminator for mentioning the change!

*blinks* I liked the Spock/Uhura pairing. Sheesh people, as Shatner so correctly put it, "Get a Life!" Put this energy towards getting actual equality for Same Sex Couples in Real Life and not in some fiction...

If you do read past that, there's already an unfunnybusiness post about it.

At least, I'm assuming (not having read any of the links yet for either), that there aren't two separate K/S make-it-canon wanks happening at the same time.

I could be wrong.

To be honest, the funniest bit about this is the part where they actually think an internet petition will actually be able to influence a big budget Hollywood movie.

Bless their naivety.

Oh god, it's the Malcolm-is-gay thing all over again. The power of fannish delusion is incredible - and I say that as a slash fan with a fair share of delusions.

I always thought K/S was canon anyway.

Spock / Uhuru wasn't created to discourage Kirk / Spock slashers. Really I don't think anything can discourage a determined slasher. Death, characters not from the same series, marriage, lack of sexual organs, Slash conquers it all.

I still fail to see how this is even remotely funny. It makes me sad inside that there are people so far gone that they can't separate an actual issue from being moronically fannish.

That aside, and vaguely on-topic, it's kind of a shame Jeri Taylor left the ST:V writing staff. She showed hints of wanting to move toward homosexual representation in Star Trek and even included an extremely minor gay couple in one of her Trek novels.

It's easier to believe he would enter into a relationship with a coworker than a student. Are there Starfleet regulations barring a relationship with a superior officer? Technically, Spock outranks Uhura, so either way, that one's out.

I'm not a big Trekkie but even I know that Kirk outranks Spock. Basic reasoning and debate- you fail at it, [info]tinuelena.

Ok, as a non Star Trek fan (although I enjoyed the movie), what is with this Kirk/Spock pairing being canon? Was a sexual relationship actually addressed at all in TOS? I know that fanficcers have been shipping them for years, but how does that make it canon if it's not in the original source material? Did I miss an episode of slashy goodness?

Also:

Maybe we should somehow get gay rights activists to watch Star Trek.

LOL INTO ETERNITY

Maybe if we get the serious gay rights activists to watch Trek (because they totally don't, they're probably off watching some shit like Queer as Folk or something, idek, WHAT DO GAY PEOPLE WATCH?!?!?!?!) they'll get behind our cause to make Kirk/Spock canon for great social justice!!!!1

since when are women minorities? Sorry, but we are 51% of the world's population. Not a minority.

I love the idea that Spock/Uhara was put into the movie to stop the K/S slashers. How do they think that script meeting went?

"We've got to do something about the slash? Any ideas?"

*deep thoughts ensue*

"Hey, I've got it! We'll show one of them with a girl! That's gotta do the trick!"

"Great idea! Why didn't anyone do that before?"

"We've got those slashers by the short and curlies now!"

I suppose it's possible that they just didn't give a shit and wrote the movie the way they wanted too but I think this scenario is far more likely.

This is eerily similar to the J2 tinhats in some regards. People, accept the hot chicks, embrace the hot chicks. Some gentlemen enjoy hot chicks, and that's ok. Really.

Hell, in this case I wouldn't even call Spock/Uhura incompatible with Kirk/Spock. Communications officer: good with cameras.
