Russell T. Davies: Tinhat SPN Wincest Shipper! In other news, Torchwood wank.
Spoilers for Torchwood follow.

Long story short: In Torchwood: Children of Earth, Ianto Jones has bitten the dust, and creator Russell T. Davies is quick to dismiss his flailing fans. In his interview with Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello, he claims that "It's not a backlash, really. It's just a few people posting online. He presents his own reasoning as to why Ianto had to die, as well as dismissing implications of having an "anti-gay" agenda by killing off a homosexual character.

Comments are varied. While some seem resigned and understanding, most people are butthurt that their favorite character died. Others think he's dissing Supernatural somehow, and a few are indignant at RTD's suggestion to "go look at poetry" if they can't handle watching dramatic television shows.

The interview is copied and posted to the [info]torch_wood community on livejournal. More wank ensues: "Why didn't Gwen die? How do queers smell? Ninety percent of fans are mad!"

Some Twitter users tweet James Moran, a Torchwood writer. James Moran's blog post about Part Four has also come under fire. Holy fuckburn titspangling cockbananas! Then there's a writer flounce!

TWoP is mad. ONTD brings on more succint, less eloquent RTD hate. Some people take it upon themselves to send coffee packets in protest. Others state that I don't like it so it isn't canon or My memories are tainted, and, as for Gwen, I really wish somebody would shoot her. Others devolve into capslocky rage. The entitlement of it all - it burns.

There's also a reaction post to Part Four, so you can see wank and butthurt develop in real time!

But the best part of the whole thing is this gem from the original RTD interview:

DAVIES: There’s a risk that some people won’t come back to watch now that Ianto’s gone. I thank them for watching the show and I recommend they go watch Supernatural, because those boys are beautiful. And don’t tell me they’re brothers. [Laughs] Not in my mind.

I bet he writes fanfiction.

This post brought to you by the ridiculously helpful mousies on [info]wank_report, the letter W and the number 4. (The W is for wut and 4 is how many cups of coffee I've already had today).

Everyone in the ONTD post LOLed about that.

I seriously want to know what teeny tiny corner of the internet RTD is looking at if he thinks there are only "a few people posting online." Maybe a few people when taken against the entirety of the internet, but I'd imagine that most Torchwood fans are also online and that a solid third (and even then I'm being generous) are Really Annoyed about at least one point in Children of Earth.

My personal annoyance is that with such a fuckoff huge bag of canon tricks they couldn't bother to use one (not even create a new one, just use an existing one). "But death is death in this case. It would devalue the entire plot if we brought him back" my fucking eye. Maybe if you saved Ianto and Steven, then that would be true. Plus, if you're the same guy whose shows have brought us gloves that can bring people back, an entire year that never happened due to the Power of Positive Thinking, and trapping Rose in Pete's World oh wait I take it back oh no okay you're going, you can stfu.

I also think that it was mean to call it Children of Earth and then kill the baby on the team D:

You know how all the fanfic writers put a disclaimer on their fics? It usually reads something like "I don't own them, RTD does."

Well he doesn't. RTD doesn't own them. Once he put them out there in the public they became ours. Yours. Mine.

Tasty wank gets tastier with fan entitlement.

I'm with the fans on this one and I've never liked Torchwood. It really gets my goat when professional writers who actively work towards producing a reaction in an audience get annoyed when it's not exactly the reaction they want and they then become Mr Mockingbird of Mockingtonville.

I'm also seeing a lot of reaction to this bit:

Question: One of my readers wondered if you were under pressure to de-gay Torchwood and that's why you killed him off.
DAVIES: I think you can forget about people picking up gay rights as an issue. It's rather like children picking up nursery blocks and waving them in the air but having no idea what it entails. We’re talking about issues in my entire life here, not just one small television program. If they did research they’d go and look at the history of gay and lesbian characters that I have put on screen. They should simply grow up, do some research, and stop riding on a bandwagon that they actually don’t know anything about.

From http://www.thehpn.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=26&topic=4175:

subtle science

http://community.livejournal.com/torch_wood/5176208.html

An interview with Rusty. Be forewarned: in this interview, he confirms that he has an ego the size of a planet and he expresses his complete scorn for anyone who dares to criticize him in an incredibly offensive manner.

Initially, I was nearly blinded by rage, reading it--which, I then realized, was exactly the response Rusty wanted. He's like any other patroniziing, condescending, misogynist, self absorbed, narrow-minded egotist you've ever run across: clearly, his entire point in this interview is to bait. Note how he's not actually discussing any ideas--the majority of the points he's making are critical insults of anyone who has done less than fall at his feet in awe over CoE.

Upon first reading, I came to understand the internet insult of DIAF.... Now I look at the interview and I'm kind of grateful: Rusty has laid out, in no uncertain terms, how low, stupid, and useless he thinks I am, because I have an opinion contrary to his own--which means mine is automatically not valid and I must be insulted for voicing it.

A few deep breaths later....and there is some satisfaction in knowing that Uncle Rusty has been stung. That vicious reaction didn't come from nowhere: methinks someone's feeling a little heat, despite his claim that only a handful of internet posters are stirring things up.......

All he did was verify that my writing to the BBC, BBC Wales, and BBCA is exactly the way to go.

(Reply to this)

Part II
[info]mariem_1
2009-07-25 09:17 pm UTC (link)
Uncle Rusty may be in for a rude shock....

An LJer started a campaign for people to contribute to the UK's "Children in Need" fund in Ianto Jones' name....So far, over 1800 UK pounds donated, and the effort has reached BBC news. In addition, another LJ is encouraging people to send donations to the Lluest Horse and Pony Trust in honor of GDL and Ianto--GDL is the patron of that horse rescue society.

You have to give Rusty credit in his interview for knowing just how to hit and where to hit....There's no mistaking that his primary target for contempt is the female fanbase. The message could not possibly be any more blatant: the women are nothing more than squeeing fangirls, not capable of comprehending intellectual concepts such as "drama," and he will dismiss them with a wave of his superior hand.

It re-affirms that he did, in fact, "de-gay" CoE in order to reach the fans he really wanted for TW: the straight white male demographic. You know--the intellectually superior group.

I don't think Rusty ever intended--ever thought of--TW's presenting a positive message about sexuality....homo-, bi-, or hetero-. He wrote only the first episode of TW; after that, it was all other writers, and it is they who developed that powerful subtext about homosexuality and bisexuality. How fascinating that, when Rusty finally returns to TW and writes for it, the first thing he does is rip that storyline out. Not only does he destroy the bisexual lovers, but he completely trashes the character of Ianto Jones: it's not that he killed off Ianto--it's that he turned him into the worst stereotype of the puling little twink; he actually wrote in material to undermine what the other writers had created in the first two series. There's a level of destruction in all of that which raises some intriguing psychological questions.....

As well as demonstrate to that Intellectually Superior Group that they no longer need to fear TEH GHEY being in TW.

A great deal of CoE comes across as a Rusty tantrum over what other writers had done to "his" show during his two-year absence from it. And Rusty's interview only confirms, to me, that he is more than capable of such nauseating tantrums.

In hindsight, I think I now have my answer--back awhile, after season 2 (which was so successful and well thought of, overall) I wondered why the sudden, mass exodus of production talent from the show....including the head writer, Chibnall. Now it all becomes clear.

I think what Rusty meant by the "digital weapon" is that the show itself can constantly change--that he can remake it and overhaul it again and again, according to his whim. In other, keep killing characters--except Gwen.

And speaking of her--yes: Eve Myles is pregnant and due sometime around December or January. So, TW4, aka Gwenwood, can't begin filming until after that, at the earliest. Doing the math--I'm guessing spring 2011 for the broadcast of TW4? Pretty long gap for the casual viewers to wait. Plenty of time, though, for those stupid, silly women to get hooked on the incest of Supernatural, I suppose........ 'Cause nothing's more interesting to brainless women than incest...............

I did write to Barrowman, GDL, and Davies--Barrowman via the email link on his website. Got an acknowledgement back from some office flunky: she was actually very nice, and she had actually read the email, which is a bonus. So, some letter opener read it and that's as far as that got. The BBC sent an auto-response that merely noted that my email had been received.

It's not like I have some delusion that any of this matters, that any person to whom anything is addressed will receive and/or care about the message--as Rusty's interview shows: the fans count as zero. But, the emails are free and the letters don't cost much to send, and it's all good for my blood pressure.

And, who knows--maybe in some fairyland, alternate universe where people do care about producing quality television.....someone will press the giant RESET button.

Yeah.

Right.

Do I spy some meta in this here post? I believe I do!

I know absolutely nothing about Torchwood, so I'm probably not one to talk, but I'm really not understanding fan reactions here at all. Major characters get killed off. Characters people like get killed off. Sure, it sucks if you're a fan (*sob* JULIEEEEET!!), but it doesn't mean the writers hate them and hate you and want to spit on your puppy. I'm always sad when my favorite character dies, but I can't imagine BLAMING someone over it*. If anything, it proved the show/book/whatever was able to really make me feel something, which I generally consider a good thing.

It just comes across as sort of petty and obsessive to me. It's a show, fanthings!

*Maybe if it was really poorly done, but then I just roll my eyes and watch something else.

It's almost hard to decide who to mock. RTD for being so "OMG RESPECT MY ARTS" or TW fans for being so butthurt about losing a character. It's Torchwood. They have whole episodes devoted to torturing, maiming, mutilating, and otherwise ruining character arcs. It's part of its charm.

I feel like I should say this and run, but I really liked CoE. I thought it was awesome. While I was upset at the death of Ianto, I was equally upset when Owen and Tosh died and I kinda liked what all it did to Jack.

Of course I'm not really a good judge of what's good and not. I like Jurassic Park III and other things that are similar in that no one seems to like them but me.

Question, am I the only one who wasn't SERIOUSLY PERSONALLY EFFECTED by Ianto dying? Although I don't think he was my favorite, I did like him, and I'm sad that he's gone, but it seems like everyone I know is way over-reacting. I respect RTD, and I'm not going to take it personally when he decides to do whatever he wants with his own creations. The whole death threats/fan campaigns/refusing to accept it as canon response is just beyond me, I guess.

I also like Gwen, and I loved Owen, so I guess I'm just full of unpopular opinions today!

I can't wait for Torchwood fans to line up and tell us how much they don't care.

Seems like that happens every time there's a big-fandom SRS BSNS wank : /

Sending free coffee to the person you're angry at doesn't seem like a winning boycott method, though. I mean, *I'd* be thrilled.
