Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Current mood:Righteous
Current music:Shoutarou Morikubo - Akaku Tsumeru Tsuki REMIX
Entry tags:anime/manga, bnf, boobies, crazy people, doesn't mean what you think it means, fanfic, fun times with aja, i want to be a hero on the internets, let the t-shirts burn!, not good with criticism, not very subtle at all, plagiarism, plucky girl detective, reading comprehension whut?, serious business, tv tropes, wankers who will not shut up, yet another entitled hp fucktard

You're a plagiarist becase *I SAY SO*!
A certain well-known person in the Hikaru no Go (Aja aka bookshop, whom you might remember thanks to other kerfuffles she's been in) claims that some BNF's had their fics plagiarised. And posts about it in her journal. Citing excerpts of the fics by both "victims" and "culprits" (which, in this repoter's opinions, aren't THAT similar) and a *very* wanky call to fandom.

So, yeah, SHUN HER, discredit her, go forth and spread the word. Let the trumpets of indignation sound!

And people start commenting about it. Some excerpts are here:

- What a skeeve. Can't you use your BNF to make ppl troll this journal?

- "She deleted her DW!" "that's the power of the BNF lol"

- The author tries to defend herself. And is hatepiled on. Errrr...

- "Please understand, I'm not implying that *any* of these fics are plagiarized, I'm saying that I'm not sure but I suspect..."

- A post on it by one of the supposedly plagiarised authors

One of the so-called "culprits" accused has had it, though! And she's NOT gonna take it! Watch as Aja keeps insisting that there was plagiarism, pretty much making an ass outta herself, and people come to umareawareru's defense.

... And finally, Aja snaps. And SCREAMS.

Final final edit, 7/30: I am done having this debate. I have explained my position and given a full run-down of the direct lifting of passages from my fic here. two_if_by_sea has done likewise here. I will not be responding to further comments about this, on this post or elsewhere. If you are lundi and you wish to contact me to apologize, you may email me. If you are an author who has been plagiarized, you may email me. All other comments, IMs, emails, or other attempts to contact me about this issue will be ignored.

I sat in a fandom chat last night in which Lundi participated. During that time, I was told that I was a reactionary hypocrite who should learn to better control my "minions," that "all fanfic was just plagiarism," and that I should have known better than to publicly post about something so serious as an accusation of plagiarism. Not once was Lundi invited to speak for herself, or questioned about anything she did. The writer in question, [info]lundi, has now restored her journal *and* reposted her plagiarisms of my fic and Cathy's, with no credit to myself and only a "recommendation" of Cathy's fic. She has yet to give any detailed public defense or explanation of her actions, while I am still being flamed by people who are outraged on her behalf. I am disgusted, I am disheartened, and I am done.

To the whole of Hikago fandom, and especially Aishuu, Issen, and Maaya, I wish you would very kindly fuck off and leave me alone.

Thank you so much, mousies from wank report!

ETA: [info]mischif tells us that Aishuu has written about the subject. Thanks to ya too!

I dunno...I like Aja's fics, and her meta can really inspire you if you're in her fandoms/ship her ships, but...I don't really see how those fics are similar at all (the ones copypasta'd in the actual post). How was it she came to the conclusion it was a GOOD idea to whiteknight when it wasn't even word-for-word and just an overly-subjective opinion?

Is it horrible of me to think that lundi's lines in the line by line comparison read as much better writing anyway, no matter what happened?

Also, I'm not in this fandom and have no idea about it whatsoever, but how much of this might be explained by trying to fit the framework of the source material? I'm thinking something along the lines of two authors in Pushing Daisies writing from the perspective of a narrator and having one be accused of plagiarizing that idea...

Does playing someone "seriously" hold special importance in this fandom's canon? The only similarity I see in the first plagiarism example is massive overuse of that phrase.

The lundi story does seem like a rip off of two_if_by_sea's story. It's a good thing Aja was there to do "some more digging" and discover that plagiarism, by being directed to it by the original story's author. A++ detective job!

My goal in making the post was not to publicly humiliate anybody, and it seems harsh to assume that just because my journal is watched by many the inevitable result of using it as a public podium is bullying.

...REALLY, Aja? But what about when you said this in the main post? "So, yeah, SHUN HER, discredit her, go forth and spread the word. Let the trumpets of indignation sound!" That's not just putting someone on the spot and publicly making a spectacle of them, it's rallying the troops and encouraging them to do the same!

Also, total fail for the "it's not my fault that because I'm so popular, everyone listens to me and does what I say!" excuse.

What I find interesting is that at the beginning of her post, Aja says:

I was randomly browsing through fics today and I ran across a bunch of hikago fics by radiosilence over at Dreamwidth.

So I clicked on one randomly and went, ....WAIT A SEC.

But later in the post [info]two_if_by_sea posts screencaps that show that she brought the alleged plagiarism to Aja's attention.

So which is right?

The only sane comment in all that was [info]lundi's reply to Aja's post- short, sweet, and to the point. The fact that people screamed for lundi to come back and fight and she didn't says more for her than anyone else in that mess,

I'm a bit mystified by this. I don't know the fandom, but in seeing the side-by-side I didn't see any plagiarism there. And it seems that the trope both stories were mining are pretty common tropes in multiple fandoms.

I'm usually pretty sensitive to plagiarism issues, but I'm just not seeing it here. Just a couple of over-sensitive BNFs getting their panties in a wad because a new fic is mining a vein of ore that's been mined a thousand times before.

Of course, what really makes this special is the fact that Aja, who made excuses for actual plagiarists in situations where the plagiarism was actually proven, is getting huffy about a case that's at best questionable.

Maybe you could make an "inspired by" argument, but I'm just not seeing actual plagiarism here. Certainly nothing that would raise any eyebrows if this was a RL, professional situation.

And the whole "SHUN SHUN SHUN" deal is really kind of...icky.

Not once was Lundi invited to speak for herself, or questioned about anything she did.

I like this part, where she oddly sounds like she's standing up for [info]lundi, until it's apparent she's mad that no one hauled her up on the carpet and employed thumbscrews until she confessed.

I was going back and forth between the two excerpts in the main post, mentally rearranging the sentence order and such. And I still have absolutely no idea where the supposed plagiarism is. WTF, Aja.

It's rare to see someone so consistently and publicly embarrass themselves outside of reality tv.
