Fan A Bit Dumb
Thanks to the mousie at wank_report!

Remember this wank? Which involved this guy? Well, if you're wondering what that rattling noise you hear is, it's the sound of head-desking over at TV Tropes, and it's all thanks to him.

Notes on the Source Material: There were 14 pages of comments, and just after I finished documenting the hijinks on page 12, everything got bahleeted. I snagged screencaps of pages 2-11 (which is more than Google cache got) but the most comprehensive record of this wank comes from my raw notes. Below the cut, you'll find a summary of the wank with links so you can bamf around and read the just interesting bits of the raw notes. The screencaps can be found here.

Cosmetor Saves the Internet

In a discussion that used to be located here, Cosmetor says he doesn't like the TV Tropes entry Fan Dumb.

Specifically, he calls it a spawning pit of hate, malicious, nothing worth keeping, pointless hatred, and ludicrously hostile. (And if that doesn't get his point across, see also [1], [5], [39], and [254])

Problem is, his fellow Tropers just don't understand what he dislikes so much about the entry. They ask him to explain ([24], [36]) and he pretty much doesn't ([127 - 128], [234 - 236].)

He does, however, explain what he feels his mission at TV Tropes is. ([202])

Faced with Cosmetor's many assertions that Fan Dumb is Teh Ebil and is being used to abuse people, the Tropers ask Cosmetor to link them to examples where this has happened. In fact, they ask him many, many times. ([41], [106], [175], [178], [183 - 187])

Cosmetor not only fails to do this, he usually doesn't even acknowledge that anyone asked.

A few people attempt to argue constructively with him ([25], [142 - 145], [170]), or point out when his arguments are invalid ([32 - 33], [60 - 63], [68 - 71], [76 - 79].)

Very little good comes of this. By Page 3, people are already trying to kill the discussion by putting it to a vote called a "crowner". ([92], [95], [117], [123]) (You can see the results of the crowner here.)

On Page 7, Wraith_Magus comes in with a conspiracy theory. (TL;DR version: Wraith_Magus suspects Cosmetor is trying to win an edit war on the Touhou page by deleting Fan Dumb in order to make the point of the war moot.) ([153], [169], [177]) Wraith_Magus also points out some other, recent bad behaviour on Cosmetor's part. ([197], [230 - 233])

Cosmetor continues to insist it all makes perfect sense while failing to explain how ([164], [205 - 213], [221 - 223]), and people begin to wonder why they ever got into this debacle ([134 - 137], [150 - 152], [188 - 189], [214 - 216], [244 - 250], [274 - 275]).

Trigger_Loaded wonders if maybe they should just let Cosmetor run amok so they can get him banned for wiki vandalism ([218].) Tzetze suggests Cosmetor's time might be better spent trying to shut down Fandom_Wank ([272].)

Eventually, Cosmetor begins to break people's sanity. ([256 - 266], [281 - 297].)

That's as far as I got before they nuked the whole discussion. Kinda makes you wonder what got said on those last two pages, hey?

These two comments, made shortly before the bahleetion, are rather telling:

(15021) Dire Sloth: So... that Fan Dumb thread... it's kind of dumb.

(15022) Tzetze: I don't want to hear about that thread again.

ETA the 001: (Thanks to [info]galateus for linkage, and [info]ari_o for linkage that led to more linkage)

Cosmetor Has Saved the Internet Before

Cosmetor's 2008 Fan Dumb discussion
Idle Dandy: Good grief. Keep, with no examples, get rid of the flames around the rest of the wiki. And stop Cutlisting Tropes You Dont Like, for heaven's sake.
Fast Eddie: Consensus for the article seems to be "keep." The examples are at issue. Disputed examples should be moved to discussion.
Large Blunt Object: There aren't any examples for this one. That's why I think it should stay.
Cosmetor: It is not a trope, real phenomenon, or anything but a vaguely defined insult. That is why it should be cut.
Large Blunt Object: Oh, just get the fuck over it. The consensus here and on Unpleasable Fanbase is that these are okay as they are and can stay, and though I hate these pages, general opinion is against me. (...) You're not going to achieve anything by saying the same damn thing again and again and again, and this page is plainly here to stay.

The Grammar Nazi discussion, version 1
23; Cosmetor: This thread was meant as nothing but an attack.
25; Sabbo: Cosmetor, we shall tell you when the universe starts revolving around you. Don't wait up.
26; Matrix: Anyways, who's up for putting all these redirects in for the lulz?
27; Cosmetor: No. Sadism is bad.
28; Matrix: Go away.

The Grammar Nazi discussion, version 2 (Thanks to [info]omgpolarbear and [info]galateus for more linkage!)
37; The Bad Wolf: We're not calling people who like grammar mass murderers Arnold Schwarzenegger would be pissed as fuck if he heard you thought of his father like that.
It's called a metaphor.
38; Cosmetor: Libel =/= metaphor.
39; C Trombley: Direct insults aren't libel. Not in America anyway.
40; Matrix: Where's the libel? I don't see any libel. You're obviously mistaken because I see no libel.
What I do see is someone who really needs that stick removed from their ass.
43; Cosmetor: I expect that would be rather amusing to someone who finds verbally abusing people fun and/or equates proper grammar with genocide.
44: Matrix: Oh hey look.
He's just repeating himself.
Don't bother with him.
He's just angry because he doesn't get it.
Edit: HEIL GRAMMAR!
54; Cosmetor: Just because I know what a Nazi is and realize that your constant repetition of "Joke! Joke! Joke!" hasn't erased the negative connotations doesn't mean I "don't get it".
55; Fast Eddie: We are into Aspie territory here. Go gently.

The More Dakka discussion
onyhow: I'm an outsider of this discussion, but when I read the whole thing, Cosmetor, you're a jerk. The point of this wiki is not just all about clarity, but also having some fun. (...)
Cosmetor: No, a jerk would decide to have fun at everyone else's expense, and at the site's expense. And would also post massive, barely-coherent strings of flames when I tried to argue with him.
(...)
Looney Toons: Cosmetor, I'm concurring with the growing consensus. You're a jerk. You're not only a jerk, you're a jerk with an image of the Wiki that doesn't match what the other contributors — or its founders, for gods' sake — have, and you're throwing a spoiled-five-year-old-girl-in-pigtails-laying-on-the-floor-screaming-and-kicking hissy fit tantrum over it.

The Bee Bee Gun discussion
Cosmetor: It isn't much of a discussion if you ignore everyone who doesn't agree with you.
Cassius335: The "everyone" he's ignoring? That would bee you and... no-one else.
Cosmetor: Except, of course, for the many other people who disagreed with you, but of course you'll continue ignoring them.
Meta Four: Rereading that discussion, it would seem that you were the only one opposed to that title, Cosmetor.

The Unpleasable Fanbase discussion
Cosmetor: No. This trope is rotten to the core, from the title on down. In reality, there is no such thing as an "unpleasable" fan. (...)
Seanette: Add another vote for "keep this, since it is a verifiably real phenomenon, thus a valid meta-trope".
Cosmetor: No. There are no fans who cannot be pleased, only authors who fail to do so. It's a verifiably unreal phenomenon.
Tanto: No individual fans? Maybe. A fandom as a whole (which is what this trope is about), though? Hell fucking yeah, they're real.

ETA the 010: (Thanks to [info]boomstickjones for linkage to the latest, hottest, breaking news!)

Internet Does Not Want to be Saved, Banninates Cosmetor

2; Fast Eddie: After review ... People tried to reason with him. This is the second time he's been around, spreading chaos. He didn't really break any rules, but being around him is a pain in the ass.
Block installed.
7; Fighteer: Whew, thanks. That Fan Dumb argument felt like it was sucking the brain from my skull.
9; Some Sort of Troper: It feels wrong to me that the thread was deleted, it should have a more fitting end. Something like the house at the end of Poltergeist, it should have imploded and been sucked into hell.

I remember seeing him try to cutlist Unpleasable Fanbase. Check it out.

I should have known he would never quite give up. He(?)'s like the Terminator.

Dude has clearly never been near any big fandoms.

Or any fandoms.

Or, well, humanity.

This article, anyone?

Man I forgot to reread Cosmetor's actual comments there. I mean, verifiably unreal phenomenon. No wonder Cosmetor doesn't want to explain anything; he discovered the secret of proving a negative! Amazing.

I am kind of fascinated by what kind of verification process he envisions to establish that there are no fans of anything ever who cannot be pleased. Does he have plans to survey the entire population of planet Earth? Door to door and at length, since it's not really the kind of thing that can be dealt with with a yes-or-no question? Maybe he has a really bored higher power on tap? Or is he is possession of some sort of global mindscanning device that he is prepared to use to settle this important question?

Or Scalzi's entry today at the AMC blog. Where last week everyone was defending the pseudo-science of Star Wars, today everyone's chiming in with their own examples of fail in Star Trek.

There are debates about this at my family reunions. Trekkies vs. Trekkers in a desperate geek-off to gain the Ultimate Nerdity. Our continuing mission: To explore strange new depths of science fiction fallacy and to seek out new cousins who haven't heard the old arguments, and to boldly go to the Trekker side of the room for the watermelon! So he's of the opinion that if someone is shrieking like harpies that they're going to leave unless their favorite pairing happens, and the author doesn't write that pairing... it's a failure on the AUTHOR's part?

I think the tugboat SS Fan Entitlement is pulling up to the crazy docks right about now...

I think it's more a case of he wants to get his way and hasn't thought the full extent of his argument through yet, where as we've seen it before and know exactly where it ends up. It's not so much a cruise on the SS Entitlement so much as "La la la I'm not listening".

Star Wars fans hate Star Wars...

There are a lot of fandoms that operate that way (although I'm a self admitted unpleasable fan so maybe it's just me).

Indeed. Star Wars just happens to be the one that has the funny article written about it.

If you'd prefer me to release some teal deer regarding Russell T Davies, I can do that too...

I could also draw an analogy with various religions in the world, but feel that would be going Too Far.

Cosmetor: No. There are no fans who cannot be pleased, only authors who fail to do so.

Very true. It's not authors make choices that will please some of the fans, but annoy others. That never happens. No never. Because all fans agree on all issues.

Oh wait -

So this trope is about grouping people with conflicting opinions together to make them look bad? Sound like bigotry of the highest and stupidest order.

Hm. So when I say that the HP fandom is unpleasable because they have vastly different opinions about what the pairings should be, I'm actually being a bigot?

Believe it or not, but we once met some other people who also had a Border Terrier. And not only was he also called Oscar, but they came from the same breeder. That's right; my dog has a brother with the same name (!!).

We called our guy Oscar because the description we looked up said a Border Terrier has a "distinctive otter-shaped head". Otter = Oscar, amirite? It was definitely better than my suggestion - "Tarka".
