[info]randomnesses, a college student in the Harry Potter fandom, posts an essay, "In Defense of Lily Evans," about the rampant misogyny she has perceived in the Harry Potter fandom, especially in regards to the Lily/Snape relationship.

Most posters react in agreement or alarm, not having realized that the anti-Lily sentiment was so strong.

Remus is a mental patient who is a danger to others and this should be a consideration regarding his placement. That's not punishment, that's the sort of decision that special education systems deal with all the time. Mainstreaming of werewolves in a boarding school doesn't work.

If it was up to [info]oryx_leucoryx, there wouldn't have been any attempts to make werewolves more acceptable in wizarding society to begin with.

But simply the failure to forgive. A fellow Catholic who was discussing this on another board said, "Not to forgive is the sin against the Holy Spirit." I think I agree with her. But then, I think a lot of us (myself included, probably) throw around the word "forgiveness" without realizing what it means. And these books are marked by their lack of forgiveness and redemption, IMO.

I'm always amused when the Snapefen claim that Lily was friends with Snape because it helped her social status. Because nothing makes the rest of the mean girls think you're awesome like hanging around with the greasy racist kid. Finally, there's the question of how Rowling writes her female characters. She writes viragoes and amazons and temptresses; she doesn't write likable, complex and believable women and girls. I thought she was headed there, with Hermione (whom I used to love before HBP) and Luna (whom I still love in spite of DH). But Lily and Ginny and Molly are unlikable female characters, IMHO.

They certainly didn't like the idea of true literary analysis, such as when we were discussing Byron's poetry in relation to Snape and how we believed JKR was building him into a Byronic Hero. We were discussing JKRs use of multiple literary genres (and BTW figuring out CORRECTLY where she was headed - we had Snape pegged as the HBP before the book came out and we were firmly convinced that there was some kind of love/friendship connecting Lily/Snape - based purely on his total silence on the subject of Lily and his introductory speech combined with the 'language of flowers') and slapped down for using other books or sources for comparison - and then laughingly referred as Snapeapologists.

It's hilarious because anytime someone tries to talk about the main essay or bigger points of the plot, Oryx focuses on minor details and semantics, like the fact that there is no proof of cross-house friendships (Harry being on good terms with Huffelpuffs and Ravenclaws was not enough, he should have been bffs with Slytherins goddammnit!) or getting hung up on Love Potions not being classified as Dark Magic when they are totes a date rape drug you guys!
