Entry tags:crazy people, fandom: harry potter, jkr doesn't know harry potter like i do, potter fandom will not be outwanked!, slytherfen, yet another entitled hp fucktard

If you think the Death Eaters are racists you are racist yourself
Apparently Snapefen can't stop wanking. [info]terri_testing posted a James-bashing essay James the Stag.

[info]oryx_leucoryx (whom we remember from "Lily was a traitorous bitch" wank) and [info]lil_itu (who wanked on hp_essays several months earlier) got loose in the comments. [info]night_train_fm tried to insert some sanity in the discussion, but without success.

From this wank we learned that Snape was a downtrodden woobie, James was a sociopath and as bad as Lucius and Vernon, Luna was probably bullied because she was perceived as a closet Gryffindor, Ron was like rapist, all people who think that pureblood prejudice is like racism are racist themselves, but inter-House rivalry is totally like racism and inter-religious hatred. Enjoy the crazy!

I'm amused by the fact that these people seem able to see every parallel, allegory, and subtextual clue imaginable except the obvious ones. Pureblood prejudice is racism, the Death Eaters are believers in eugenics -- anyone should be able to see that, shouldn't they? I know, I know, HP fandom. I used to be in it. But still!

So lil_itu drops by another's journal, sees commentors who actually read the post, are commenting on what was actually posted, and decides to start fighting with the commentors without bothering to read the original post. Wow.

It's as if they don't want to face that their favorite characters are... wait for it... oh, yes, villains, terrorists (the T word! Gasp!), and the lackeys of a guy who couldn't win a 1-on-1 with a toddler.

Or maybe the people who argue it isn't racism, it's about culture, history, etc., think a deatheater meeting looks something like this:

I think Snape is the especially spry man in green.

They are actually right to think this way, because they are an actual superior race of people, physically stronger and mentally wiser. Genetically better. Miraculously better. And they should hold onto that right to infringe upon the inferior people's right to free will, if they want to protect themselves against the historically proven threat of Witch-hunting.

Do we really need to go through the mental exercise of substituting the word "Witch" there with "innocent Aryan Frauleins" before we can understand why that makes us want to shudder? This is what the HP story teaches. It's what's written there, not as an opinion of one faction of Wizards or another, but as a (resoundingly metaphorical) story-internal fact:

I... I... um... that is... wow, I got nuttin'.

I mean, I just thought this was a book about a magical world within a world. I never knew there was such srs bznzz going on in there.

thoughts on "House Unity"?
[info]maximuski
2009-12-01 01:59 am UTC (link)
Oh, and yes, I do think the House-hatred exemplified by Draco, Ron, James, Severus, Hagrid and James II is as bad as racism and that the House system at Hogwarts is the second worst thing in the wizarding world to the attitude to Muggles.

Ok, I'm getting annoyed by all these "house unity!!!111" claims.

I just see it in the same way as sports rivalries. You're raised (or in some cases, you choose) to see a certain team as "rival" and you get excited about beating them in some games. This is not the same as hating them at a personal level, as people, and acting on it. In short, I don't see rivalries as an evil thing per se, so long as you stay sane about it.

I already made a tl;dr srs bsn comment over in [info]the_hms_stfu but I will reiterate this point.

And I wonder how much of Luna's isolation in Ravenclaw has to do with her being perceived a s a closet-Gryffindor.

Or maybe because it was she was fucking weird!? I love Luna, I do, but it's not always about the weird kid being misunderstood. Sometimes, they really do just make people uncomfortable despite being ~*beautiful*~ souls, and I can easily see why Luna would make people uncomfortable.

We see James use magic for his own gratification, to show off, to attack potential rivals, to escape authority, to endanger others. We never once see him use it to benefit others or to protect someone.

Snape invented Sectusempra. HE. INVENTED. IT.

He had to think it up ("Hmm--how about a spell that slices people's flesh open?"). He had to decide it was a good idea. He had to do the work to develop it, and test it (which sort of begs the question: who or what did he test it on?). At any point he could have realized that it was a cruel, nasty piece of work, felt some appropriate shame, and decided to stop working on it--but he didn't.

Snape created a spell meant specifically to inflict injury on other people, and possibly kill them. That was his sole intent and purpose in making it.

And, it isn't too much of a stretch to say that "Sev" did this for his own gratification, to show off, to attack potential rivals ("For enemies"), to escape the authority represented by Dumbledore (while currying favor with the authority represented by Voldemort), and, most certainly, to endanger others (especially Muggleborns and their sympathizers). Sectusempra is neither a beneficent or protective spell.

And oh, yes, James has always struck me as an arrogant asshat--the kind of douche-y guy who thinks his pranks are so funny. What Lily saw in him, I don't know; we're never really shown that. But I'm not sure it's all that important to the central story, which is Harry's, so I don't really care. Women marry cocky assholes every damned day in RL, after all.

But sometimes those cocky assholes manage to grow up, and that James (despite his frustration at being confined) stayed home, in hiding, with Lily and Harry suggests maybe he did, to an extent. Again: we don't really know. But we do know that for all his "bullying toerag" behavior he wasn't inventing cruel new means of injuring, disfiguring, and possibly killing people he didn't like.

Snape's personality and behavior are awful on the surface, and even worse when you look more closely at them. JK Rowling wasn't kidding, or trying to mess with the fandom when she called him a "deeply horrible person." He bloody well was. And while James never struck me as such a prize, the Snapefen's insistence on inventing new reasons to tear him down will never, ever make poor woobie "Sev" seem nobler by comparison, or take away from the fact that he was a stunted, cruel individual.

I don't know for certain about Luna, but I do think she was considered a House-traitor, whether because she was merely an inappropriate Ravenclaw or because she was displaying the behaviors and supporting the values of a different House.

...is there any evidence at all to suggest that anyone thought she was a "house traitor"? Weird, definitely. Traitor? Not that I can recall.

(Plus, Ginny and Michael Corner dated without being labeled "house traitors," as did Cho and Cedric, now that I think about it. Or even Cho and Harry, which is probably the best example since we know for sure Harry never received any kind of flack for dating someone in another house.)

This is beyond funny and into just really fucking weird. It's like I was watching The Producers and instead of "Springtime for Hitler", they did twenty minutes of Pink Floyd's The Wall.

Ya know... the last book did make me feel quite badly for Snape, but I got over it in just a few days.

Hmm... maybe they can't get over it because they keep complaining about it? Or maybe they just don't want to let go of their disappointment?

Crazy Snapefen:
MORE UNSUBSTANTIATED STATEMENTS STOP MINDRAPING MUGGLES AND TORTURING SNAPE LIKE JAMES DID CUZ HE LOVED LILY.

See, I'd ask where I'd get a copy of "Severus Snape Meets That Asshole Harry Potter and His Gang of Hooligans," but it sounds like the kind of unpleasant book where I'd want everyone to die at the end :(

Oryx is batshit enough to be entertaining, but I find lil_itu to just be painful to read through:

And for the record, please refrain from using the word "racist" to describe anti-Muggle bigotry. Unless, you're trying to argue that rather than race being an artificial construct that has nothing whatsoever to do with physiology or abilities, you're really arguing that White people are akin to magically gifted people and non-Whites are Muggles.

Yes. Entirely. There is nothing socially constructed about blood purity ideas. Also, allegory is dead.
