lj genderfails, bnf responds with accidental russophobia, a couple of fanpoodles slip the leash
It all starts with what people are already calling LJ Genderfail: the newest beta version of LJ added a mandatory "gender" field to the sign-up process and eliminated the "unspecified" option (LJ quickly responded that the mandatoryness and binaryness of the new question were an accidental bug, and that the code was not going to go live. Of course, not everyone believes them about the "unintentional" part).

Well-known SGA BNF, former lj staffmember and co-founder of Dreamwidth Synecdochic made a call-to-action post that included the line,

It's been a while since I've been furious with anything LJ has done; having DW has done a lot to calm down my knee-jerk "AUUUGH NO" whenever Moscow does something stupid again.

A few people, some Russian and some not, are offended by this, and object. Synecdochic apologizes and edits the post after a request for clarification, but that is not enough to stop Ivorygates from making her side look bad.

Furiosity (who identifies as Russian) had objected to dismissing an entire culture because you're mad at some of its representatives, and Ivorygates takes the opportunity to school her. In her own cultural history. Because, you know, Russians don't understand freedom: it's not in their culture! America's special history of free speech can't be truly respected by them! (At this point Synecdochic freezes the thread.)

But Ivorygates isn't done! Bell had commented to Synecdochic that saying "Moscow" made a decision wasn't the same as saying "San Francisco" did because "Moscow, in US rhetoric, is that creepy place with commies and weird politics and gangsters". Ivorygates PMs her about this claim,

Are you actually -- are you actually seriously -- suggesting that identifying as a Russian national -- online, where you are safe from physical attack and can maintain anonymity -- presents you with duress identical to the harassment and persecution that transsexual and genderqueer individuals experience not only on-line, but in every facet of their lives?

Furiosity also posts to ask people to apologize instead of getting defensive when informed that they have offended "someone's race/culture/language/sexual orientation/gender identity/whatever". In her post meddie_flow comes to Synecdochic's defense with the ever popular Bingo square of "She didn't mean anything by it" with a side-order of "don't turn everything into a lynch-mob". Being offended by russophobia is also likened to being offended by the color red, and I'm honestly not sure if the irony there was intentional or not...

I'm a bit boggled because really, Synecdochic in all reality didn't mean anything by it, and uhm, Synecdochic did apologize and edited her post. I can see why she froze the thread when people kept yelling at her after she got why what she sad was hurtful, apologized for it, and edited her post.

And given the subject of the post I found it more than a little derailing.

Cocktails!
[info]arionhunter
2009-12-16 02:30 am UTC (link)
Psh, who needs food when there's cocktails to try. Here's a favorite, via Gourmet:

The Royal Rickey
1 jigger (1.5 oz) gin
.5 oz dry vermouth
.5 oz fresh lime juice
about 1/2 to 2/3 cup chilled seltzer
1 tablespoon raspberry syrup or bottled raspberry syrup (available at specialty food shops)
And a lime slice for garnish

In a tall glass filled with ice combine the gin, the vermouth, and the lime juice, fill the glass with the seltzer, and add the raspberry syrup. Stir the drink and garnish it with the lime slice. Makes 1 drink.

I've made this three times this season (We had a lot of pumpkin left from Halloween, okay?) and it's been a big hit everywhere from church suppers to synechdochic's fangirl gatherings:

Pumpkin Spice Bread
(makes 2 9x5 loaves or 3 8x4 and one small)

3 cups sugar, 1 cup oil, 4 eggs, 2/3 cup water
2 cups cooked pumpkin puree or one can pumpkin puree
2 tsp ginger, 2 tsp allspice, 2 tsp cinnamon, 1 tsp cloves
3 1/2 cup flour, 2 tsp baking soda, 1 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp baking powder.

Preheat oven to 350 deg F. In (large!) mixing bowl, combine sugar, oil, & eggs until smooth; add water & blend. Stir in pumpkin and spices. Add remaining ingredients and blend until flour is evenly mixed (more or less.) Pour in greased loaf pans and cook for ~1 hr. or until toothpick in center comes out clean.

Rachael Ray's rosemary prosciutto corn cakes
[info]emily_goddess
2009-12-16 02:33 am UTC (link)
# 1 box (8 1/2 ounces) corn muffin mix (I use Jiffy)
# 1 egg
# 3 tablespoons butter, divided
# 3/4 cup milk
# 2 to 3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh rosemary leaves
# 4 slices prosciutto, chopped
# 1/2 cup honey

Combine muffin mix with egg and 2 tablespoons of the butter – heat it in the microwave on high for 15 seconds - with the milk, rosemary, chopped prosciutto and a few grinds of black pepper. Rub the griddle with remaining butter nested in a paper towel to lightly coat the cooking surface. Form 6 small cakes, 2 to 3 inches and cook cakes until golden on each side, then repeat with remaining mixture. Serve by drizzling honey over the hot corn cakes.

I love serving these with chili instead of plain old cornbread. Also: if you don't have prosciutto, bacon is equally tasty.

Fried Wontons

1 pound ground pork sausage (ground pork can be substituted)
garlic powder
teriyaki sauce
yellow onion
1 package wonton skins
1 cup water
shortening

Using your hands, mix one pound ground pork sausage with garlic powder, teriyaki sauce and chopped yellow onion to taste. (If you'd like to make it to my taste: Make a loaf of pork in a small to medium-size bowl. The loaf should not touch the sides of the bowl. Pour in enough teriyaki sauce that when later mixed with the pork sausage, there is enough to darken the pork through and through, but not enough to alter the texture and make it runny. Visually, looks to be about one-half to three-quarter inches high, does not come up to the top of the loaf. Coat the top with enough garlic powder that it is visible even where the top of the loaf was splashed by the teriyaki sauce you poured in earlier. Purchase a small to medium yellow onion and plan to use all of it. Chop finely until you get bored, annoyed or your eyes start tearing. End up using about one-quarter to one one-third of onion. Co-mingle all four ingredients with your hands. Do not worry about loaf shape, is a visual guideline for adding teriyaki sauce and garlic powder only.)

Wrap a dollop (about the size of your finger from tip to first knuckle) of the pork mixture in a wonton skin. You can use more or less as you go along. The goal is not have any pork or skins leftover at the end. Aim for something like this shape, but with fewer steps. Dip ends in water and press to maintain shape.

Heat shortening in a deep fat fryer (Do not attempt to use Butter-flavor Crisco! It and margarine seem to make the wonton skins strangely soggy. Do not use oil either, as it gets too hot too fast when cooking large amounts and does not easily cool down.) Heat oil to a temperature that will cook the outside of the wonton to a golden brown (with visible "bubbles" on skin surface) and cook the meat inside thoroughly enough not to give anyone food poisoning. Cut a few open after cooking to make sure the temp is correct. If the skin starts to blacken before the inside meat cooks, the shortening is too hot. If there are no "bubbles" on the surface of the wonton after the meat cooks, or the skin does not turn golden brown, the temp is too low.

Wontons will float on the surface of the shortening and may need to be flipped. About six wontons can be cooked at one time, depending on the size of your fryer.

Place cooked wontons on paper towels.

This recipe makes 100-200 wontons.

Oh thank god, the recipes already started, because I am starving.

Personally, I'm craving tuna and don't want to go out in this storm to get any ingredients. Is there anything simple and tuna-based you can suggest?

Brown Sugar Chocolate Chip Cookies
2 1/4 cup all purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
3/4 tsp salt
3/4 cup butter, room temperature
1 1/4 cups brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 large egg
1 1/4 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a medium bowl, stir together flour, baking soda and salt.
In a large bowl, cream butter and brown sugar until light, about 2 minutes. Beat in vanilla extract and egg until smooth. With the mixer on low speed, gradually add in all the flour mixture, stopping when the dough has just come together and no streaks of flour remain.
Stir in chocolate chips.
Place slightly rounded tablespoons of dough on baking sheet.
Bake for 9-11 minutes, until just golden around the edges.
Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Makes 3 dozen.

I have discovered that I like my oatmeal savory more than I like it sweet. Butter/Parmesan/salt/pepper is my go-to recipe, but I'd love some other suggestions.

I'm going back to college next month and need good ideas for easy easy* breakfast/lunch ideas that don't require cooking. I'm going to be in a dorm with a meal plan so dinner's fine but I don't want to eat cereal everyday.
