Perhaps I should write some Vagrant Story fanfiction in the comments, since I just spent a couple hours in the Iron Maiden smacking around a bunch of undead wizards. Though he had been dozing against the ruined wall, dreaming a dream now unclear, Ashley lifted his head at once at the sound of the voice carried upon the breeze.

Wake, Riot - I require your help, please...

"Merlose?" Ashley rose to his feet. Her whereabouts were not immediately obvious, but he was aware by now of the oddities of Lea Monde.

Hardin is under some kind of attack, something is literally trying to eat Joshua.

Ashley stiffened. He cared not for the cultist, but the boy was an innocent, and Agent Merlose accompanied them. "Where are you? Is Sydney not assisting them?"

He sent a message and we didn't get it because we were on the road - now when Hardin contacts him, it is like no one is home.

Ashley's sword was already drawn. "Tell me where you are."

Please, this is your dream - the boy is in the cathedral being eaten by monsters! There is something big, something dangerous and deadly. You have the capacity and power and strength to do something...

Her voice faded into the breeze through the streets, the rushing of the water below, and Ashley looked to the great cathedral that stood in the center of the city. There was nothing left to consider; he set out immediately.

The way into the cathedral led through the undercity, into the broken temple of ancient Kiltia, fraught with spirits from ages long past. With his weapons well-honed on the rest of the city's undead inhabitants, Ashley made short work of them, but he still could not locate Merlose, nor the boy or either of his captors.

Until, after dispatching yet another haunted suit of armor, he heard living voices from the room beyond.

"...Spirit/Astral form of technically dead but very powerful Seneca Sachem-level shaman, plus allies and minions. I know this sounds crazy, but is true."

Hardin, Ashley realized, peering through the door. Joshua sat on the floor beside the cultist, without a care, and Merlose sat across from the two of them.

"Ok, I'm enlisting some help," she was telling him. "Do you know why this is happening? Who's ultimately behind it?"

"Something isn't right here," Hardin muttered. "This isn't shamanic energy, but something darker. And there's only one energy signature, no sign of allies or minions."

"Are you sure of your source?" Merlose inquired, sounding skeptical. Ashley had to agree. If the man was receiving information from, say, Rosencrantz...

"Also," Hardin continued, his expression distant, "there seems to be a secondary target, but I can't identify it. What's really going on...?"

"A source said it was above the wheel," put in another voice, and Ashley tightened his grip on his sword as Sydney abruptly appeared behind Hardin. "With each spoke a world and the hub a connection place. It was a shaman/wizard."

Ashley frowned, and finally pushed the door open wider; there was no sense hiding any longer when Sydney would have sensed his presence. "Sydney," he began, the others turning to regard him with surprise as he stepped into the room. "Although I have seen the impossible come to pass many times within this city's walls - an undead shaman/wizard?"

"Indeed, Riskbreaker," Sydney stated calmly. "An undead shaman/wizard - from the late 16th century, possibly - but he has passed from the place of the dead to something above that. Several targets have been hit so far. We cannot be sure who or what is the current secondary target, and the allies seem to have been neutralized by someone from the hub as a favor to our Lady."

"That seems a mite convenient," Ashley remarked, stepping forward to stand between the cultists and Merlose, with weapon at the ready. The Duke's young son was too attached to Hardin; he had not budged from the man's side, but shrank back from Ashley. Ashley could not attack while Joshua was with them. "I would very much like to see evidence of any of this, particularly your undead shaman/wizard."

Sydney lowered his eyes with a smirk. "Very well, Riot," he said, turning away with a grand sweeping motion, raising his bladed hands to the air as he chanted the words of a spell. Ashley raised his shield instinctively to guard against the flash of light, and then...

It was indeed a creature from among the Cold Ones who stood between them now... but upon looking closer, Ashley noticed something quite peculiar.

Prepare to join us in the world beyond worlds, Riskbreaker... spoke the creature in a strange, distorted voice.

Instead of attacking, Ashley reached out a hand and pulled the robes from the lich's body to reveal...

"Don't hurt me!" cried the strange little man, throwing his hands over his eyes. "I knew I should have stayed at home!"

"A hobbit?!" Merlose exclaimed in disbelief, staring at the furry feet.

"Oops," Sydney mumbled, backing away. "Uh, wrong fandom. Let me try that summon again-"

"I think not," Ashley said. He thought he knew the truth of the matter now, and before Sydney could escape, Ashley had caught up, taking hold of Sydney's wrist and pulling the blond wig from his head, revealing darker hair beneath. "As I thought - this is Sydney Losstarot."

"Also known as Amy Player, Victoria Bitter, and Andrew Blake!" Merlose realized. "I'm familiar with his file - though his acts have long hovered just barely on the side of the law, the record of his misdeeds spans the whole of Valendia!"

This must have been news to Hardin, who fell to his knees, punching the floor. "Diablerie!" he spat.

This time, his deeds clearly were illegal; they were within their rights, as agents of the VKP, to take him into custody. "I will bind his hands," Ashley told Merlose, pulling a length of rope from within his pack. "You keep an eye on Duke Bardorba's son."

Sydney/Amy/Victoria/Andrew smirked over his shoulder at the Riskbreaker. "That will not be necessary - for the Duke's son...?"

Merlose gasped as a small brown bird took flight from its perch on Hardin's arm.
