Warning, possible thoughts on Yaoi I did Yuletide for the first time this year, and one of the things I loved about it was that 99% of the people I encountered through it were nice, sane fans of rare fandoms. As this was my first year, I never experianced the other archive, but from everything I've been able to glean it was horribly broken and the minor breaks of the AO3 archive this year during reveal were nothing compared to what had been. From what I've heard, this archive move is a very good thing. I've hung out a lot in Yuletide's IRC chartroom, so this sudden wrath against AO3/OTW is coming out of the blue for me. I thought everyone agreed the old archive was crap, and the owners of the code have publicly said they need to get the old stuff off there so they can burn the code. And while you as the author might not want your fic 'more public', your recipient (remember? Yuletide is about writing for other people) might still want to reread the lovely fic you wrote, hence why taking your fic down is considered uncool. What I'm confused about is how is the centralization of fandom a bad thing? Why is having one archive I can go to to find all the fic I want, one that is better monetered than the Pit I might add, a bad thing? I find OTW a little pretentious yes, but I find most mission statements a little pretentious. Am I missing something? Post a comment in response: |
