Amanda Palmer wank!
Amanda Palmer is a solo artist, formerly one half of The Dresden Dolls. (She's also dating Neil Gaiman, but that's not important right now.) She's known for experimenting with music a lot and throwing spontaneous free gigs at airports and beaches. And inviting her fans to a night out at a strip club via Twitter, featuring Katy Perry and Peaches as surprise guests at her concerts, making silent films with Bill Nighy, things like that.

For the past month or so she's been tweeting about practicing a Tchaichovsky piece for an upcoming concert. She eventually decided it was too hard for her and came up with a pretty funny and creative solution (starts at 2:45), which she later blogged about, explaining why she feels it was the best thing to do.

That was a lot more narcissim than artistic expression. Art usually requires self-discipline at some point. I'm not dissappointed, however. Truth to tell, I only expect narcissim from you these days.
- Please do record a clip of yourself playing this piece so we can all see how it should be done.
- Art does not require self-discipline at all. Art requires expression and emotion; self-discipline is often counter to these.

Nobody who actually LIKES this piece could possibly have enjoyed it.
- Get laid, Stephen Cole. It might help you.
- If you think that was lame, then you really don't understand music and the community of artists and their fans in this modern day and age at all. I feel sorry for you.
- I am also a Stephen Coles and I formally submit that this fellow is unworthy of the name.

Amanda, you don't do anything original! Don't forget that, regardless of what your teenage "minions" say between their posts of "U RULE" and "xD". (Posted again four hours later to really drive it home.)
- I really don't understand why you're even visiting this site except to antagonise people.

Amanda herself responds somewhat passive-aggressively to the whole thing.

ETA - Since the video isn't loading for everybody: what she did was, she plays the first half normally, then staged an interruption by someone's cell phone going off in the audience. She walks over to the cell phone guy, drags him onto the stage and makes him play the piece from where she left off (in a "well, see if YOU can do it then" kind of way). The guy turns out to be a pianist friend of hers (Lance Horne), and they finish the piece with four hands and drink some wine. So, no music was changed, no damage done to Tchaikovsky, just some help from a professional.

*watches video* that was AWESOME. 8D I've heard of Amanda Palmer, never really connected her to classical music for whatever reason. ^^; But why are people getting burrs up their butts about a set-up like that; it made the music more entertaining, and I doubt Tchaichovsky is spinning in his grave over it.

I'm mostly chuckling at her hubris: "I always hated to practice! I can barely read music! ...I'll tell the Pops I want to play a Classical or Romantic piano concerto, a genre traditionally designed around virtuosic display by the soloist! This will be great!"

My first thought when reading the wank was: Who the hell is Amanda Palmer?

The second after watching some of the clips: She's Tori Amos in disguise. Not getting her appeal, but then music is subjective. However the wank is lovely.

I've been a (somewhat reluctant) fan of Amanda Palmer's for years, and the minute I realized she was trying to play that Tchaikovsky piece, I cringed. That's a famously difficult piece, and Amanda's a famously lazy pianist. You go to her shows to see ridiculous antics, an entertaining performance, and to witness how NO ONE could love Amanda as much as Amanda loves Amanda. You don't go to her shows to hear fine piano-playing.

Speaking as a srs classical musician who has had to back out of more than one gig because the music was just too damn hard for me, I think she handled the situation quite well, and in her own particular idiom. Then again, people who wank about ~classical music~ and ~artistic integrity~, particularly in the case of traditionally popular musicians, make me irrationally upset. We're not all stiff and snobby and trying to limit the exposure of classical music, I swear!

On an unrelated-to-my-comment-above-but-related-to-the-wank note, a similar gag has been used before, and by (mostly) classical musicians no less. (And imho in a much funnier way. But I digress.)

Internet, you disappoint me. *goes looking for the DVD that has to be around here somewhere*

Not an AP fan whatsoever. Also not a Tchaichovsky fan even a little bit, and so, who knows, maybe if it was Bach or Mozart being dissed, I would work up a head of steam over the artistic outrage.

Thing is, this sonata has already been used by practically everyone to make jokes about classical music and classical music fans, so much so that all I have to do is hear that incredibly bombastic opening and I expect shennanagins: Liberace suddenly beset by fangirls with autograph books or Victor Borge interrupted by a process server... Spike Jones liked to insert the opening bars of the piano part into random madness. It's a silly, silly piece of music, already at maximum saturation with hubris and pianistic histrionics, and I'm mostly disappointed that she chose to add to the existing body of parody rather than finding something new to make fun of.

Frankly I'm surprised that the wank ISN'T to do with her dating Neil Gaiman.

Ah so this has nothing to do with Twin Peaks than? Oh yeah, that was Laura Palmer. Darn crossing streams.

Dear god in heaven, I don't know which is worse...figuring out her need for a lack of caps once in awhile, the almost self-congratulatory post, or the fans.

they finish the piece with four hands and drink some wine.
I'm OUTRAGED.

This is total shameless plagiarism of the worst kind; plagiarism of Black Books.

The wank is kinda ugly, but I have to say the video had me grinning right on through. That's a wonderful piece of performance comedy.

I had never heard of Amanda Palmer before, but I tried to watch part of one of her videos and couldn't get more than 10 seconds in. She's too self-consciously hip for me I think.

she plays the first half normally, then staged an interruption by someone's cell phone going off in the audience. She walks over to the cell phone guy, drags him onto the stage and makes him play the piece from where she left off (in a "well, see if YOU can do it then" kind of way). The guy turns out to be a pianist friend of hers (Lance Horne), and they finish the piece with four hands and drink some wine.

Eh. If you want to combine classical music with cellphone interruptions, this is how to do it.

The Boston Pops New Year's Eve thingy is traditionally much more loosey-goosey than even a regular Pops show, which is much more loosey-goosey than the Boston Symphony. So it's not like people were going to this expecting Serious Classical Music and were disappointed.

Tempest in a teapotz what what?
