Why fan -- er, pro authors can't have nice things.
Rob Thurman is an urban fantasy author who desperately wants to get the 6th book in her series on the NY Times bestseller list. According to a wee mousie, the way bestsellers are calculated is by applying a complex and seekrit algorithm to the first week's sales, from Tuesday (when new books, like albums and babies, "drop") to Saturday. So it's very important to rack up sales during that time period if you want to list.

Also according to the mousie, Thurman's been going nuts for the past month, posting in all caps, and topping things off with this post. Thurman berates a reader for buying the book on Monday because said reader is having surgery on Tuesday. The reader apologizes, Thurman says she'll need pictures of the surgery.

Thurman's specialness doesn't end there. Non-USA readers have to buy two copies of the book to get their reward (sneak peek at the 7th books), people who buy online are Ebil! and more CAPSlock.

Her tweets are also... yeah.

Hat tip to the mouse, for stealing borrowing chunks of her post.

The "give me pics of your surgery!" thing sounds like she's just joking around, but still. This entire thing is so full of "WTF".

You know, I've seen authors post about 'what can you do to be sure my publisher gets the message that you like my books', but this seems a bit excessive.

The surgery post seems tongue-in-cheek... and Thurman and the fan have a laugh about it.

She definitely does not have a zen-like approach to book promo, but...where's the wank again?

Yeah, not seeing wank, just seeing an author totally stressed out probably because her publishers are hanging a lot of stock on her book charting in a system that ignores how, where, when and in what format people buy books in 2010.

PS I need a computer genius to help me figure out how to lock the Cal 6 chapter one so you minxes don't email it to the free world. I know adobe can be locked so you can't copy it, but then a few rotten apples would forward it. And I want this to be for those who really stand up and support Cal and Niko this week. International readers: You don't count on the NYT. So there is no way you can help me there, but buy *two* Roadkills, send receipt for proof, and you, too, can see chapter one of Cal 6. Don't want to discriminate against my overseas fans.

The hell? Who would buy two books just to get something they will be able to read anyways? It's the internet, sweetie, once it's out there it's out there.
And way to not discriminate against your overseas fans for something that is in no way their fault. If it doesn't count towards your bestseller list (on which your name will never be, btw.) just give them the preview for being kind enough to support you in their country. Really.

Disclaimer: I like the series, will be buying this book, and have had no interaction with the author; didn't even know she had an LJ.

The exchange about the surgery seems fairly light-hearted on both sides, so I don't really think that's wanky, tbh. It seems pretty apparent that Thurman is feeling the pain of being genre midlist in a weak economy, in an industry that's having seizures because it can't handle technology. I think that's understandable, even if it could be handled more graciously.

That being said, the linked post does not make me interested in following her LJ, nor do I think I will inform her that I'm likely getting this next book in (paid) electronic form, because I don't want to know how it affects her NYT ranking. :P

I was expecting way more douchebaggery than is here? It sounds like she's joking on the pics, and it's only so they can get the preview thing... not like a "HOW DARE YOOOUUU PROVE TO ME YOU CAN FOLLOW MY INSTRUCTIONS HORRID FAN!" or something... she needs to chill a bit, but that's really all. :/

I will say though, I hope her books read better than her blog. "You are the utter best fans in the world"? Really?

I loved this exchange in her LJ:
[info]wah_keetcha: I was so excited to wall around a corner in my local barns and nobel and saw RoadKill sitting there on a nice cardboard display! Grabbed it an all but ran for the check out, way to excited to get home and read it. Know it's going to be awesome, thanks so much for these kick ass characters and stories.

[info]robgoodfella: Sweetie, you totally didn't even read the post, did you? Or any of my posts or tweets. You can't buy until TUESDAY--tomorrow! Or it doesn't count on NYT or any of the other rankings that keep my publisher interested in keeping the series alive. And now you can't have a look at Cal 6 chapter one a year in advance.

Why. Why do I try? Head thunk on desk.
Yes, because the appropriate response to a happy fan who just bought your newest book, and is excited to read it, and who thanks you for writing in the first place is to...berate them for buying it? STAY CLASSY, THURMAN.

And it looks like many booksellers have gone ahead and put Roadkill out on the floor, selling it ahead of the official release date--which spawned this bit of busted logic from [info]herverylowness (emphasis mine):
You can always mention to the booksellers that the book is not supposed to be out just yet and that it's detrimental to the author's sales. Most places are more than willing to take the book off the floor for a few days.
So...putting a book out for sale, where customers can come in and buy it, hurts the author's sales? Bzuh?

And a sampling of tweets that really, really make me not want to buy this author's work, ever:

Yeah.

I can understand her desire to be on the NYT bestseller list. But bitching and moaning and treating fans as if they are a bunch of clueless illiterates in order to get there? And telling fans outside the US they have to buy two copies of the book to see the preview because their sales don't count toward official NYT bestseller-dom? Fuck that noise, dude. There are too many authors I haven't yet got around to reading, and chances are good most of them behave better than this.

Thurman berates a reader for buying the book on Monday because said reader is having surgery on Tuesday. The reader apologizes, Thurman says she'll need pictures of the surgery.

Okay, this? Is the best thing I've read in EVER. "How DARE you buy my book one day early? Surgery? Pics, or it didn't happen."

Btw, these last three weeks -- is there something special in the water authors are drinking lately, because yeesh. Thurman is lucky that her readers are so friendly; I think I might've returned the book to the store over this...

I just can't read stuff on Twitter. I think maybe it sets off my "It's the internet! Don't read the comments!" thing...

Short version; ts:dr.

That scientist lady who shot those people at UA and apparently also her brother--punched a lady in the throat at an IHOP when the woman took the last booster seat and then proclaimed, "I'M DR. AMY BISHOP!" as if that should mean something? I guess this author probably isn't such a sociopath, but the entitlement feels similar.

Never heard of this author before, but I will be making note now - so I don't pick up her books by accident at the used bookstore or anything. That's just bitchy.

The main thing I have learned is that the NYT's rules make no damn sense.

"spoilers for Cal 6? Robin talking dirty? Cal wanting to throttle? Interview w/Cal and Robin: http://bit.ly/dldTQw RT 'cause this is gooooood"

That canned response to everyone is driving me up the wall. Wow.

I've read the first couple of these and I have one of them (# 3 or 4, I think) in my To Be Read box. I'm sort of sorry I found this. And more sorry I delved around the journal. I don't think I'll be able to read any of these now without hearing the entitlement harping in the background.

If I can get past that and do decide to keep reading, I am happy to say that I am Canadian and will not contribute to her making the NYT List. Just in case though, I will also be sure to buy it online.
