Why fan -- er, pro authors can't have nice things.
Rob Thurman is an urban fantasy author who desperately wants to get the 6th book in her series on the NY Times bestseller list. According to a wee mousie, the way bestsellers are calculated is by applying a complex and seekrit algorithm to the first week's sales, from Tuesday (when new books, like albums and babies, "drop") to Saturday. So it's very important to rack up sales during that time period if you want to list.

Also according to the mousie, Thurman's been going nuts for the past month, posting in all caps, and topping things off with this post. Thurman berates a reader for buying the book on Monday because said reader is having surgery on Tuesday. The reader apologizes, Thurman says she'll need pictures of the surgery.

Thurman's specialness doesn't end there. Non-USA readers have to buy two copies of the book to get their reward (sneak peek at the 7th books), people who buy online are Ebil! and more CAPSlock.

Her tweets are also... yeah.

Hat tip to the mouse, for stealing borrowing chunks of her post.

I wish I was a fan on her flist just so I could tell her I was checking it out of the library.

I long for someone to tell the author they always wait for the book to hit the local library.

Oh Rob Thurman no! I love the Cal Leandros series (though was much less pleased with the Trixa Iktomi series). I'm just going to amuse myself with Cal and Niko's adventures and pretend that none of this ever happened, la la la la la la~

WTF is up with her copypasta-ing her twitter page all over her LJ? Like... that's what your twitter page is for, right? If people wanna read your tweets, they'll just click on over to your twitter. Right? Am I crazy? And she wants to criticize other people's reading comprehension?

From her user info: "Despite the ten books in all that will eventually make their way to the shelves, I'm still starving. Please buy, do not borrow."

Yeah, not reading her books, ever.

Eh, not particularly seeing the wank here. She's gone a bit nutty promoting her book and wants to make the NYT list. The NYT has some very esoteric rules as to which sales help make a book to the list and which don't. And I'm glad that I now know them so I can help my favorite writers (full disclosure: Of which she is definitely one, because holy crap, and yes, I bought my copy of Roadkill yesterday and am devouring it because it's awesome) in my own small way.

I'd a hell of a lot rather see Niko and Cal on the NYT list than Bella and Edward.

Weird. I'm kinda interested in checking out the books, though. This chick used to write fanfic back in the day and I still have a bunch of it on my hard drive, despite her attempt to wipe out all her stuff from the internet. This is why you don't write slash fic under your real damn name, people.

On the one hand, there are some great writers who also happen to have been terrible people.

On the other, none of her writing makes up for her Massive Entitlement, specifically haranguing her fans.

(Though it makes me wonder what it would have been like if Hemingway had a blog/Twitter...)

I like the NY Times sellers list butthurt in the comments here moreso than the actual wank at hand.

OMG, are you stupid? How dare you not know how best sellers lists work! *frothrage*

While searching randomly, came across some reviews of her books:

In the reviews are some quotes:

"Always unfailingly prompt, she swept out the door, cloaked in silence as shimmering as her silk shawl."
"I gave a silent wince at her arch tone, the needle-sharp point of a stiletto coated in warm honey."
"It took me a moment to realize that was a venomous version of a snake's wistful sigh."
"Crumpled and decaying rose petals masquerading as lips smiled back at me."

Oh, authors- never forget how to be wanky and obnoxious.

As for those who aren't seeing the wank-

wank
what is it

Self-aggrandizing posturing. Fannish absurdities. Circular ego-stroking. Endless flamewars. Pseudointellectual definitions.

I think Ms. Rob Thurman ticked off all of those given her comments in reply to people who are disagreeing with her. Also, he potshot at those who utilize libraries is disgusting.

This is the reason I defriended and stopped following my favorite authors. One of the fantasy authors I loved would throw a panicked fit every time a non-favorable review of her books went up on Amazon, and I'm talking about a depressed, BNFy pity party in her journal. It made me feel too uncomfortable. An insecure author can ruin a book for me.

I've been seeing a lot of this bullshit in the last couple weeks. My favorite was an author who said it was our job to go into bookstores, find the works of our favorite authors, and turn them so the covers face outwards, because it will help sales. We're also supposed to ask the clerks if they have our faves' titles in stock, on the theory that this will encourage them to order and stock the books. (Because having extra unsold books on the shelves will totally help when next ordering time comes around. Or something.)

Dear authors: I will happily buy and read your books, but I am not your agent, your marketer, or your goddamn flash mobketeer.

Huh, I always thought Rob Thurman was male. Which I suppose is the point.

She'll be displeased to know that while I bought her first book I'm just grabbing the rest of the series of paperbackswap. I find it entertaining but not omggottareaditnow good.

Really? And to think I actually bought and read the new book yesterday. Although now I'm a wee bit amused by the fact that the books weren't on the shelve and instead were in the back room waiting to be shelved. Really wasn't the best book in the series either. It had some interesting character development, but the writing wasn't the best. Nowhere near as good as Deathwish at any rate.

And this is why I avoid knowing things about the people who write books series I enjoy. It always leads to disappointment.
