Why fan -- er, pro authors can't have nice things.
Rob Thurman is an urban fantasy author who desperately wants to get the 6th book in her series on the NY Times bestseller list. According to a wee mousie, the way bestsellers are calculated is by applying a complex and seekrit algorithm to the first week's sales, from Tuesday (when new books, like albums and babies, "drop") to Saturday. So it's very important to rack up sales during that time period if you want to list.

Also according to the mousie, Thurman's been going nuts for the past month, posting in all caps, and topping things off with this post. Thurman berates a reader for buying the book on Monday because said reader is having surgery on Tuesday. The reader apologizes, Thurman says she'll need pictures of the surgery.

Thurman's specialness doesn't end there. Non-USA readers have to buy two copies of the book to get their reward (sneak peek at the 7th books), people who buy online are Ebil! and more CAPSlock.

Her tweets are also... yeah.

Hat tip to the mouse, for stealing borrowing chunks of her post.

As someone reminded me upthread - she actually does this every time she gets a book released, and last year, it actually worked:

http://robgoodfella.livejournal.com/50429.html

(So she got a tattoo done to celebrate: http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i295/likethekoschka/robtat.jpg.)

So I guess either she's just selling enough to get on there, and the temper tantrum is a bit pointless or...uh, we can look forward to a lot more wanky authors with a NYT fetish in the future.

I almsot went cross-eyed trying to figure out the anatomy of those wolves(?) and how come each one has a paw on its back. I still don't get it.

I think the wolves are supposed to form a second Triquetra design.

Or at least I think that's what it's supposed to be but then again I'm also half cross eyed from trying to figure it out.

She's been on the NYT list? How is that even possible?

She's #26 on the 13/3/2009 list of Paperback Mass-Market Fiction. No idea how much of an impact that has (I've never read it, but I can't imagine the NYT prints the lists in their entirety; correct me if I'm wrong), but fair enough, she's on an NYT list.

I've been debating buying the first book in this series for a while now. Thanks to this display of entitlement I'll just find something else to read.

I'm not sure which is worse: The amazing condescension towards people who are spending their hard-earned money on her books because they're not doing it exactly the way she wants, or the fact that people are actually apologizing to her and letting her speak to them that way.

The main character of the series can be incredibly emo. I wish I could tell you there was a funny story in there, but it's best summed up as "Thurman thought it was funny."

Her saying that her overseas readers have to buy 2 copies to qualify annoyed me and still annoys me. However, I did end up feeling a mite concerned that she, a US-based writer who managed to get on the NYTimes Bestsellers list, earns less than a McDonald's employee.

http://robgoodfella.livejournal.com/profile

"I make less money than the drive thru person at McDonald's. Hell, I'd marry the drive thru person for their health insurance."

I hope she's just exaggerating.

She probably isn't. It ain't easy living as a novelist alone if you're not hugely super famous.

I don't really have a lot of sympathy for someone who is privileged enough to not HAVE to get a day job and yet whines about making less than folks on minimum wage (who also likely don't have insurance because employers keep you under 40 hours and don't offer insurance to part-timers).

Two copies of a book to see a preview chapter of a future book you'll likely buy anyway.

FUCK NO. Even Butcher couldn't convince me to pay that much to see a few scraps of dialogue.

I wouldn't necessarily be inclined to stop reading her, if I was, though; if I stopped listening, watching, or reading anything by people who were wanky, immoral, stupid, or otherwise, I'd be cold and alone and bored. I mean, hell, I still buy Anne Rice's new stuff. (Granted, Angel Time definitely made me regret that decision. I haven't even cracked open her Jesus Lives! series yet.)

So she's still starving, and she'd marry the drive-through person at McDonald's for the health care benefits. This is a good plan, as she'd also get employee discounts on cheeseburgers, taking care of the food problem.

If she's starving and would make more money working at McDonald's, then she should go work at McDonald's. Not everyone can make a living based solely on their art. Of course, if she wants to take the risks and devote herself full time to writing, that's a valid choice too. But if she chooses the latter, she shouldn't whine and moan while telling her fans--who are buying her book--how much they suck.
