Why fan -- er, pro authors can't have nice things.
Rob Thurman is an urban fantasy author who desperately wants to get the 6th book in her series on the NY Times bestseller list. According to a wee mousie, the way bestsellers are calculated is by applying a complex and seekrit algorithm to the first week's sales, from Tuesday (when new books, like albums and babies, "drop") to Saturday. So it's very important to rack up sales during that time period if you want to list.

Also according to the mousie, Thurman's been going nuts for the past month, posting in all caps, and topping things off with this post. Thurman berates a reader for buying the book on Monday because said reader is having surgery on Tuesday. The reader apologizes, Thurman says she'll need pictures of the surgery.

Thurman's specialness doesn't end there. Non-USA readers have to buy two copies of the book to get their reward (sneak peek at the 7th books), people who buy online are Ebil! and more CAPSlock.

Her tweets are also... yeah.

Hat tip to the mouse, for stealing borrowing chunks of her post.

It's so very condescending.

Aw, Sweetie, you completely missed the point, didn't you? If she doesn't condescend often enough, she won't get enough points to make the NYT's PAAWNTSRTPS list.

*Passive-Aggressive Authors Who Need To Seriously Rethink Their Promotional Strategy. It looks slightly dirtier in acronym form.

It looks slightly dirtier in acronym form.

...for a moment, I first read that acronym as "PAWN STRIPPERS."

Now I'm pondering what that means - trading in your old/used strippers for quick cash, strippers that dress up as chess pieces, or something else entirely? >D

Unfortunately, I first read it as PRAWN STRIPPERS. There's really only one thing that could mean, and it's really kind of terrifying unless somehow Pepe the King Prawn is involved.

Yeah, Pepe could bring it off.

I can picture it now, him swinging around a pole in little pasties and a g-string, and then yelling at the cheapskates who give him anything less than twenties. "You think I'm doing this for my health okay? I need the money okay?"

I need a Pepe icon. *covets your icon*

Is this going to be featured in the upcoming hot_daily picspam? You've gotten my hopes up with this mental image.

Unfortunately, no. The images exists only in our minds. Hopefully there's enough there in today's picspam to make up for the lack, though. XD

Every time I am called sweetie by some pompous nincompoop, my urge to make their shins bruise-o-riffic via mass kickage rises SO MUCH. Fear my shorttank rage.

Yeah, Sweetie should only be used with small children or a very close loved one. Not random strangers on the net.

Ditto (or where I'm from [NOLA] at least); it and "darling", "sugar", "hon[ey]", "doll" are just nice things to say to people. I went to school up north and then left the U.S. entirely, but it's still something that I have to actively keep myself from saying. I know that it can be offensive (especially without the requisite Deep South accent), but it's such an ingrained part of being "friendly" that at times I find it difficult to avoid. :/

I'm very culturally spongey and start doing it when I've been around someone who does it a lot. Without meaning to. Emo face.

Same. But I've found if you use it all the time, people realize after awhile it's just a word...not an attack on their person.
