Because it's worth getting really angry over a 30-year-old tv show.

You know, I was a huge fan of the original show - watched every week, owned toys, books*, saw the movie in the theater, etc. But I was TEN YEARS OLD.

Sorry. I've seen the repeats on SciFi, and the show's just not that good. As a matter of fact, it's one of the cheesier, poorly acted efforts out there. If you're going to be angry over a show, at least make it a quality one.

But SciFi really loves pissing off the fans, don't they?

*Okay, I still own the books.

It's okay, I've got a print of the Frazetta painting of the girl pilots somewhere. Because, girl pilots!

Yeah, for the whole half-episode they were allowed to fly.

News of the suddenly female character, now played by Katee Sackhoff (The Education of Max Bickford), has inspired online petitions and impassioned online bulletin board campaigns demanding that the suits at the Sci Fi Channel "keep their hands off Starbuck's genitals."

That line just made my day.

what just gets me is that it's just a show.. just like Harry Potter is just a book... and anime is just a animated show. (as this starts an all out wank :P) The old is old and the new is coming accept it, no one is forcing you to watch it and it doesn't stop you from being a fan of the old series. I guess the big fear here is change, but no matter what the networks do with the new show they are not touching the old episodes and altering them if you know what I mean. They are still the same. No one forces Harry Potter fans to watch the movies, no one forces anime fans to watch dubbed versions... though now I'm seeing how weak my argument is heh.. cause harry potter fans always wank and anime fans are always bitching and complaining about dubs.

ah forget it, I'm just going to sit back and laugh at the stupidity of it all.

What gets ME is how people stake their entire frickin' EXISTENCE on this thing.

I've been known to sit and bitch about, say, anime translations, at times for longer than really necessary (we all have our pet peeves...mine is how "Mazoku" was translated as "Monster" in Slayers...) but it's not like it really affects my life one way or the other...it's just something else to complain about when I'm done with the rest of my life.

These people, though, act as though Starbuck being rewritten as a chick is something that will bring about bleedin' Armageddon over our collective heads. And we all know that Armageddon will be caused by rebelling penguins coming to take their power back.

Er, yeah. And I realise how wanky it seems to write a full-on post detailing why people shouldn't take things like this seriously. I bleed irony for a living.

Well, the pay sucks, but you can't beat the perks (own Razor Uv Snark, scripts to unreleased Daria episodes, "Green Phone" direct line to most centers of government, free donuts on Wednesdays...)

Only problem is that we get a LOT of work around election seasons. And this Gray Davis thing has us all working overtime and going home lightheaded.

Hahahahahah! That happens to be my little peeve with the commercial-release script for Slayers too! I think it's slightly more legitimate than some of the others out there, if only because using "Monster" to describe them when they already describe orcs, goblins, were-beings, and other creatures as "monsters" makes it rather confusing for someone who's only watching the series casually.

They honestly should've just translated it as "Demon Race" (regardless of all the bitching they might get from conservative parents), because that's what they essentially ARE.

I'm also a bit peeved by the whole "grandfather and great-grandfather" mistranslation rather than "EITHER/OR," because it started a whole very bad misconception about Rezo and Zel's family being a bunch of inbreeding crazies, rather than a simple case of Rezo apparently being so distant with his relatives to the point that Zel isn't even sure what exactly his blood relation is. Aside from that, though, the translation work on the sub (haven't seen the dub, though I recently re-purchased the series on DVD) is pretty top-notch stuff, I think.

< /*splurt* >

Ah, it feels good to have a little wank before I head off for work. :D

And here I've been mentally instering the banjo music from Deliverence whenever I watched that scene for nothing!

I was bugged by both of those too... but is it really sad that I can't help but laugh/whine about the translation of 'zakenaiyo' in one of those "fighting Shabby" eps? The officials translated to 'stuff it', if I recall the exact wording right and all I can think is ..."Gourry... saying 'stuff it' to a mazoku high lord.... BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!". I mean, I realize that the language is more polite, but really, 'zakenaiyo' is closer to 'fuck off' in context.

....wow, it's really wanky to pick out that one little thing, isn't it? XD

My personal pet peeve anime wank are the folks who insist that Tasuki in Fushigi Yuugi needs to be translated as swearing like a sailor, when quite frankly, that's just not true. Sure, he's gruffer in his mode of speech than most folks, but I've seen fansubs of FY that have him inserting 'fuck' and/or 'shit' into practically ever utterance he makes.

Japanese as a language doesn't really have swear words the way English does. Contextually, you have sayings that are really harsh, and that would make someone very angry to hear (e.g., zakennayo) but they don't really 'translate' as swears by literal meaning.

In fact, 'kuso,' which is pretty much the literal Japanese word for 'shit' has the opposite problem. While it does mean 'shit,' it's use in daily language is much closer to the way English-speakers use 'damnit' or 'crap.'

The More You Know.

Oh, I realize this. I try to accomodate for the differing levels of politeness the two languages have, and I try to check things like that with my Japnaese teacher before I go 'spreading the truth' of them. XD

Really, it's a preference- I wouldn't have Gourry (or Tasuki) swearing like a sailor, but at least in that one case, I sure as HELL wouldn't translate what he said LITERALLY. But in their regular speech? There's ways to translate the same vulgarness without inserting swear words that just aren't there.

And thanks for correcting my spelling on zekennayo. I totally spaced that one. ^^;;;

Exactly, nothing wrong with a good ol'bitchfest with your friends but when you start turning it into a Mission or a Religon that's when you have a problem.

I mean on the YGO ML I'm on we often bitch about the cuts made in the dub but it never goes any farther than than that. I don't recall any members dragging a voice actor in to battle against the EVAL Kids WB CEO.

My counterpeeve to this is seeing the word 'ryuuzoku' thrown around in fics left and right, when in the series, they simply use the word 'dragon' instead (katakanized, but still)...

It strikes me as fangirls trying to be extra wanktastically superior by using TEH NIHONGO.

You know, I started following the links about the new BG, and it really sounds quite good. Obviously I can't judge without having watched it, but the script was interesting and the pics all looked good.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing it now. Sacrilege, I know. But thanks, Ann!
