An RP based on a wiki, with an admin of the wiki as a player...what could go wrong?
Okay, this was over on SF_Drama already, but the writeup on Wank Report was glorious and had better context. So here it is, courtesy of a mousey and with most of mousey's language intact (I cut some editorial and found some more links):

The SCP Foundation is creepypasta that evolved into its own wiki: it's a series of articles presented as the internal documentation of an organization that stores and studies supernatural or otherworldly entities and phenomena. It's got a convincing real-world horror bent and is fairly popular.

A while back, a few people decided to start a panfandom livejournal roleplay based on the SCP Foundation. Since there's a fair bit of overlap in audiences, Project SCP immediately garnered good word-of-mouth and a lot of interest on LJ's own RP-oriented anonymous discussion board, rpanoncomm. In fact, one of the first people who applied to the game was darksunlight, an admin of the SCP Foundation wiki (after he noted some misgivings about the idea). As one of the original contributors there, he applied for a character who's both part of the original SCP canon and his creation, one Dr. Bright.



Eventually, someone on rpanoncomm made a thread here voicing some concerns about the game's operation. The thread soon turned to focus on Bright's behavior. The player apparently never used the same format as everyone else, at some point commented IC on his OOC journal, and disregarded information in the game's info posts, but what worried anon most was a thread (now deleted, sadly) in which Bright's player told someone who had just had an OC accepted that their character didn't belong there and that his would probably kill theirs. (In an RP with permadeath, even.) Note, again, that Bright, while Head Cheese of the wiki, is not a mod of the game.

The anon discussion was pretty calm and constructive, actually, with some talk towards identifying exactly where the problem is, and a bit about the concessions needed to successfully base an RP on an existing work. Even the game's head mod chimed in thanking the anons for their input.

And then, a couple days later, project_scp is closed. Naturally, rpanoncomm blames Bright immediately-- Link 2, Link 3.

On the same day, Bright's player makes a post to BRPS, bitching about some of the problems people have with him in reverse. It doesn't take long before sockpuppets angered by the death of project_scp show up, Bright starts deleting posts, and the wank reaches its full glory. I recommend this thread, which attempts to explain why players are not supposed to do the mods' jobs, as a highlight.

Eventually Bright-mun is banninated, but not before rpanoncomm also starts discussing the BRPS post: Thread 1, Thread 2, Thread 3.

My favorite line: Dude, this guy is taking me back to my childhood. He reminds me of this kid I once argued with that was convinced that it could only be a poem or a song if the words rhymed.

And some people still just want to know where the game went.
