Entry tags:author entitlement, authors, creator wank, doesn't mean what you think it means, fanfic, suck it up and deal, writers are often pompous douches, your kink is not okay

Diana Gabaldon, author of the wildly popular Outlander series, has an opinion on fan fiction: I think it’s immoral, I _know_ it’s illegal, and it makes me want to barf whenever I’ve inadvertently encountered some of it involving my characters.

Highlights include:

  • Writing fanfic is just like breaking into someone's house.
  • Fanfic is WAY WAY WAY TOO PORNY omg ick people have sexual fantasies!*
  • What to do about an auction offering fanfic to raise money for a cancer patient? She doesn't want to "seem heartless"! So she seeks advice in the comments. Which are mostly full of "Fanfic? I have never heard of such a despicable load of garbage! Also, CRUSH THAT CANCER PATIENT!"

ETA: Unpublished author Eddie Louise (who cannot write the word "shit" and seems to fail spectacularly at reading comprehension) offers fanfic writers A CHALLENGE! Accept it if you dare, sniveling pedo thieves!

ETA 2: Previously, Ms Gabaldon has said fanfic is like selling your children into white slavery. Well. Now. I don't even know what to do with that.

ETA 3: Smart Bitches, Trashy Books has some discussion on the topic.

ETA 4: And bookshop on LJ/DW has a rebuttal.

ETA 5: See what happens when I leave the sweet embrace of the internet for a few hours? Ms. Gabaldon updates her blog!

ETA 6: Evidently Ms. Gabaldon deleted all evidence of her hissyfit, but some wankas have screencaps in this thread.

ETA 7: [info]kate_nepevu has screencaps and the text of Gabaldon's posts here. And via [info]alchemynerd, more screencaps available here:

Thanks for all the links! :)

MOD REMINDER: Remember, my little wankas, we DO NOT troll the wank. Nor do we write fanfic after the author has specifically requested people not and post it in the comments here, no matter how tempting it may be. Carry on. oh god my inbox ow ow

*Just as a point of interest, I was a bookseller for 12 years, and had several customers tell me about the sex scenes in her books. Some were pro ("My friend told me to read these books for the sex scenes, and she was totally right, they are so hot, this is best thing to happen to my sex life in years!") and some were con ("What is up with all the sex all the time? Where's the story?"), but one thing you can't say about her books is that they're sexual-fantasy free. :D

Oh dear, someone Doesn't Get It. Popularity suicide by poorly-thought-out rant, in the tradition of many thoroughly mediocre writers.

I will just be over here boggling at the "changing the character's names makes it ok!!" thing.

Damn, if only I'd known to tell my teachers that. I could have sold my not-actually-a-fanfic (Because I changed the names! And made it a cross-over!) I wrote in fourth grade gotten rich! /sarcasm

Yeah, no. I'm not a writer, and I probably never will make it as one, but I'd prefer people writing fanfic to changing the names around and claiming it as theirs. But that's just me and I am possibly chopped liver (actually, I hope not. onions don't agree with me).

I have a lot of sympathy for people who want to write. I used to want to write,

so she doesn't want to write anymore? o_O

and I had no idea how to develop characters. Oddly enough, the notion of using someone else’s characters never occurred to me. I just tried to do it on my own. Surprise! It worked.

Suck it up, guys. If you want to write, write—and write your own stuff. It _does_ take courage, but that’s the only way to learn how, believe me.

Some people would disagree. For some people using someone else's characters is a really good practice. I personally began my writing path(?) using original characters, but I still write fanfic for fun.

And that's just what fanfic is about for yet another group of people: fun. They have no desire to pursue an actual career as writers, and they don't have to.

When I was at primary school, one of my teachers made the whole class write fanfic for The BFG.

It was awesome (and probably horribly Mary Sue filled), and the class all liked it.

Is this what made me into an evil fanficcer? :(

And what about the ficcers who write genfic? Don't they exist?

(Sorry if this double posts!)

Immoral? Immoral? Immoral.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Every time I see an author going off about how Horrible and Bad and Very Wrong fanfic is, I want to ask them how they feel about stuff like Wicked and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead</a>. Or, like, Star Wars novels.

Was anyone else totally freaked out by her likening fan-fiction to mailing her letters about her family having sex?

Because, you know, other people shouldn't think about her family having sex. She, however, is free to write it in as much detail as she wants.

... Just, what?

GABALDON! *squeals* MY TEENAGEDOM <33333

I love how she says "inadvertently encountered" like she just walked around the corner and into some kind of involved dramatic reading, or perhaps got trapped at a park by a really long fanfic that insisted on chatting to her and wouldn't shut up and smelled like cat pee.

Heh.

A wild Fanfic appears! Go, Pearlclutchik!

[What will Pearlclutchik do?]

>Fight

>Cry

Pearlclutchik used Cry! But, it's not very effective!

Poor thing. She's not making money over people showing appreciation for her work while not making money themselves.

6) But I just looove your characters! And isn’t imitation the sincerest form of flattery?

Weeeelll…let us just say that there’s a difference between someone dating red-haired men, and the same someone trying to seduce my husband.

Fanfiction: it's just like home-wrecking, breaking and entering without stealing, and camping without permission, but not growing pot. I think I see why she doesn't turn out a book once a year.

Someone never heard of Rule 34.

While not all fan-fic is pornographic by any means, enough of it _is_ that it constitutes an aesthetic argument against the whole notion.

So... pornography and erotica are inherently aesthetically invalid? Thank you for telling me what I'm allowed to write and enjoy, Ms. Gabaldon! Without you, I might think sex was a huge part of the human experience and therefore a perfectly okay thing to write about!

And what the fuck does she think she's writing, then?

Diana is pointing out that wrong is wrong, no matter the circumstance. And she is right. Murder is no more wrong than stealing. Stealing is no more wrong than lying. It is all the same. Many here have said that fanfic is "grey" in regards to legality. If one is not sure the rightness or legality of an action, then said one should not be doing it.

What. What is the WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS.

I think someone sending you a letter detailing rape fantasies with your actual daughter are a bit different than someone taking your created characters and making them have sex. Because, you know, your daughter is real and will actually have to suffer through that, while your characters don't really know if the sky is blue or green. Just sayin', that argument might not hold up.

Plus, I thought romance novels were thinly disguised personal fantasies that women inadvertently insert themselves into. I mean, who wouldn't wanna bang Jamie? That's like asking a Twihard NOT to fantasize about Edward or Jacob. Now it's wrong because I put it on the internet? Color me confused.

Write anything you want, using Jamie Fraser, Edward Cullen, Harry Potter _and_ Dr. Who….and then change the characters’ names before you post it. Simple. Find All: “Jamie Fraser”. Replace with: “Joe Kerastopolous”. No problemo, all your own work, and any praise you get is duly earned.
WTF? I'm off to pitch my novel "Russet Moon" about a vampire called Kevin who falls in love with a girl called Pretty Sparrow (they get together after he saves her from getting squashed by a bus and she's got a werewolf friend called Jack who also likes her). It's all totally original though because the names are different.

While not all fan-fic is pornographic by any means, enough of it _is_ that it constitutes an aesthetic argument against the whole notion.

Good to know that if a critical mass of people do something I don't like with a specific form of media, I can just write off the whole genre.

Right now, I'm oscillating between, "Because porn is ... bad ... ?" and "NO."

Her (the poster’s) idea for fund-raising is to auction off a custom-written piece of fan-fic, involving Jamie Fraser and Emmett someone (who I _think_ is from Twilight; I sort of hope it’s not the willowy young “bottom” from the TV show “Queer as Folk”…).

. . .You'd prefer someone from Twilight over the amazing and fierce Emmett Honeycutt? No, wrong decision!

And you can’t use someone’s copyrighted characters for your own purposes, no matter what those purposes are.

Highlighted because this sentence really annoys me. I get that there's debate about fanfic, but kee-rist, woman, fair fucking use. If my purposes fall under fair use then I can damn well use your characters and you can shut it.

(Yes, what constitutes fair use is debatable, but that's the point: debatable, not written in stone that her characters are to be looked at and NOT TOUCHED IN ANY WAY PUT THEM DOWN BEFORE YOU BREAK THEM)

I realize it's a minor point in a large amount of special snowflakeism, but easily disproven statements like that are a personal munchkin of mine.

Mind you, small surprise that she's got such a narrow view of acceptable use if she has history with Disney, the home of twisting copyright law so hard it forgets the safe word.

1) What the hell is with these fans? I have never seen any fandom besides maybe Torchwood rip each other apart like they are in the comments. Is there some kind of Pious Outlander-Loving Housewives vs. Those Evil Fanficcers war going on we're not privy to? Because, seriously, some of those fans are so far up her ass I'm surprised they can use a computer.

Plus, I LOVE this "HOW CAN YOU SAY IT'S NOT HURTING ANYONE? IT'S HURTING HER. HOW DARE THAT GIRL DYING OF CANCER CASH IN ON OUR AUTHOR'S SUFFERING SPIRIT. HOW DARE SHE???" going on.

I bet if she asked some of these people to go light fan-fic writers on fire to prove their loyalty they would.

2) What's this I'm reading about her nailing the guy to a table and one of the books and anally raping him???? My grandma reads this shit, guys, I need to warn her. >>

3) Has no one asked her about her thoughts on yaoi? Internet, you've disappointed me today.

So many of her arguments don't make any sense. Fanfiction is like trying to seduce her husband. Fanfiction is like breaking and entering. It's also like planting marijuana in someone else's yard. Fanfiction is okay when it's an officially licensed sequel/parody/etc, but not when it's someone writing for free and not even claiming to have ownership of the story.

This is just making me want to go read fics, honestly.

Sooooo she's saying that fanfic is terrible and traumatising because it's like people are writing sex fantasies about her family ... but with the whole "Jamie was based on my husband thing" isn't that like exactly what she's done herself? I mean, that's kind of real person fiction right there, isn't it? And then she feels like people are fantasising about her husband ... oh honey ... you made your bed ...

I'm kind of traumatised that I was apparently reading lots of explicit sex scenes featuring her and her husband, actually. I mean, god. Now I'm having flashbacks to scenes like the one where she was touching herself by a river or whatever and it's like seeing deep into the sex life of my mother. AUUUGGGGHH.

... in other news, I'm wondering how she'd react if she knew I named a horse after her husband's textual proxy.* Might not go down well. Especially as I used to ride him for hours every day and get him all sweated up in leather and such. Also, he had no balls.

* I was out of ideas for a show name and the horse's everyday name was Jay Jay and he was red and white and I was enjoying Dragonfly in Amber at the time DON'T JUDGE ME
