Entry tags:author entitlement, authors, creator wank, doesn't mean what you think it means, fanfic, suck it up and deal, writers are often pompous douches, your kink is not okay

Diana Gabaldon, author of the wildly popular Outlander series, has an opinion on fan fiction: I think it’s immoral, I _know_ it’s illegal, and it makes me want to barf whenever I’ve inadvertently encountered some of it involving my characters.

Highlights include:

  • Writing fanfic is just like breaking into someone's house.
  • Fanfic is WAY WAY WAY TOO PORNY omg ick people have sexual fantasies!*
  • What to do about an auction offering fanfic to raise money for a cancer patient? She doesn't want to "seem heartless"! So she seeks advice in the comments. Which are mostly full of "Fanfic? I have never heard of such a despicable load of garbage! Also, CRUSH THAT CANCER PATIENT!"

ETA: Unpublished author Eddie Louise (who cannot write the word "shit" and seems to fail spectacularly at reading comprehension) offers fanfic writers A CHALLENGE! Accept it if you dare, sniveling pedo thieves!

ETA 2: Previously, Ms Gabaldon has said fanfic is like selling your children into white slavery. Well. Now. I don't even know what to do with that.

ETA 3: Smart Bitches, Trashy Books has some discussion on the topic.

ETA 4: And bookshop on LJ/DW has a rebuttal.

ETA 5: See what happens when I leave the sweet embrace of the internet for a few hours? Ms. Gabaldon updates her blog!

ETA 6: Evidently Ms. Gabaldon deleted all evidence of her hissyfit, but some wankas have screencaps in this thread.

ETA 7: [info]kate_nepevu has screencaps and the text of Gabaldon's posts here. And via [info]alchemynerd, more screencaps available here:

Thanks for all the links! :)

MOD REMINDER: Remember, my little wankas, we DO NOT troll the wank. Nor do we write fanfic after the author has specifically requested people not and post it in the comments here, no matter how tempting it may be. Carry on. oh god my inbox ow ow

*Just as a point of interest, I was a bookseller for 12 years, and had several customers tell me about the sex scenes in her books. Some were pro ("My friend told me to read these books for the sex scenes, and she was totally right, they are so hot, this is best thing to happen to my sex life in years!") and some were con ("What is up with all the sex all the time? Where's the story?"), but one thing you can't say about her books is that they're sexual-fantasy free. :D

Oh good, dear old Eddie's BAWing over the first two comments to his post, claiming that they're both "personally insulting". Oh gosh, this is beautiful.

SARAH, GET THE KAHLUA, IT'S GETTING BETTER!

From a review of Outlander, quoting it:

I was lame and sore in every muscle when I woke next morning. I shuffled to the privy closet, then to the wash basin. My innards felt like churned butter. It felt as though I had been beaten with a blunt object, I reflected, then thought that that was very near the truth. The blunt object in question was visible as I came back to bed, looking now relatively harmless. Its possessor [Jamie] woke as I sat next to him, and examined me with something that looked very much like male smugness."

This reminds me of a good post at bookslut mcoking Isabelle Allende's sex scene:

“Zarité became foam beneath him. In the anguish and voracity of love so long contained he was not quick enough to penetrate her, and in an instant his life escaped in a single burst. He sank into the void, until Zarité’s hot breath in his ear brought him back to the madwoman’s room. She hummed to him, lightly patting his back, as she did with Maurice to console him, and when she felt he was beginning to return to life she turned him over on the bed, immobilizing him with a hand on his belly as with the other, along with her bitten lips and hungry tongue, she massaged and sucked him, lifting him to the firmament where he was lost among the racing stars of love…”

Because OWWWWWWWWW

Bah. I scoff at that challenge and offer one of my own! I suggest we celebrate this wank by writing awesome, raunchy, porny fic in the fandoms of our choice and then linking back here to share the joy.

Now I haven't read Outlander so I can't do my part to wound Ms. Gabalon's fragile soul, but I can think of two zombie hunters who could use some sexy fun times.

What say you all?

I love the idea that I can somehow molest fictional characters--you know, even though they're not real and nothing I can do can effect them in any way because there's nothing to effect.

Because that means that... I have a deeper connection with Wufei than I had ever realized.

Someone ought to marry us.

I can't ever really understand the "why don't you write your OWN stuff!?" whines. I like to write. I don't ever plan on trying to get anything published, or getting acclaim, or anything. I just like to write, and I like to share it with people on the internet. Fanfic is a fun and, yeah, an easy way to share that with like-minded people.

If I ever get published, I predict that I will search the internet every day after it its the shelves looking for fanfic. And if I'm fortunate enough to find it, PARTY TIME. Seriously, I would throw a huge party, invite everyone I know, and read that shit aloud.

Except if it's tentacle porn, at which point I will probably not invite my parents. If it's slash, however, I'll spring for the open bar. ;)

IF fanfic authors were real authors they'd write their own books. But writing your own stuff is pretty difficult and incredibly daunting. So, I understand the attraction of wanting to borrow someone else's characters - the hard work is already done. And if it's pornography you want to write - why do you need to borrow someone else's character? Just write your own because it certainly doesn't have to have any depth to be erotic.

While I am probably not in the majority, I'd disagree. I find erotica much more pleasing when there are interesting characters getting it on and having interesting interactions with each other. If I wanted paper dolls then I would read original fiction porn.

The main thing in her post that bothered me was the use of _this_ instead of italics. What the actual fuck, lady? Is that the type of formatting you use in your manuscripts?

Also, I'm getting the idea she's not terribly familiar with the concept of fanfiction in general, if she assumes that changing all the names would make them original stories.

I don't know if Snacky will see this one, but this should definitely be added to the post: Gabaldon has said in the past that people who write fanfic are the equivalent of people who sell their children into white slavery. Don't mind me, I'll be over here writing some nasty, nasty Lee Goldberg/Diana Gabaldon porn.

Unfortunately, I see that the RPF ficlet I posted upthread doesn't pass Eddie Louis's test! The horror!

In retrospect, I should have asked for permission to post it in a moment of prayer.

Also, Ms. Gabaldon, I suspect that you read some fanfic in your high school English classes. It's called Dante's Inferno and not only is it fanfic, it's self-insert fanfic. And one of the great works of the Italian language.

So uh. I thought people only typed like _this_ in places where the italics tag wasn't available?

Also, I'm willing to bet that every single piece of fanfic I have ever written, including the smut, is less porny than her books.

f my book does get published, it is likely to attract fanfic (fantasy/magic/romance stories tend to) and I just don't know how I would react.

I suspect you don't have to worry.

She knows it's illegal? Dear me.
Goes to show what all those pesky lawyers know. In her opinion: nothing.

:( :( :(

Diana, you make me sad. If only Jamie Fraser weren't one of my all-time favorite fictional heroes ever, you might make me sad enough not to read your books anymore.
