Entry tags:author entitlement, authors, creator wank, doesn't mean what you think it means, fanfic, suck it up and deal, writers are often pompous douches, your kink is not okay

Diana Gabaldon, author of the wildly popular Outlander series, has an opinion on fan fiction: I think it’s immoral, I _know_ it’s illegal, and it makes me want to barf whenever I’ve inadvertently encountered some of it involving my characters.

Highlights include:

  • Writing fanfic is just like breaking into someone's house.
  • Fanfic is WAY WAY WAY TOO PORNY omg ick people have sexual fantasies!*
  • What to do about an auction offering fanfic to raise money for a cancer patient? She doesn't want to "seem heartless"! So she seeks advice in the comments. Which are mostly full of "Fanfic? I have never heard of such a despicable load of garbage! Also, CRUSH THAT CANCER PATIENT!"

ETA: Unpublished author Eddie Louise (who cannot write the word "shit" and seems to fail spectacularly at reading comprehension) offers fanfic writers A CHALLENGE! Accept it if you dare, sniveling pedo thieves!

ETA 2: Previously, Ms Gabaldon has said fanfic is like selling your children into white slavery. Well. Now. I don't even know what to do with that.

ETA 3: Smart Bitches, Trashy Books has some discussion on the topic.

ETA 4: And bookshop on LJ/DW has a rebuttal.

ETA 5: See what happens when I leave the sweet embrace of the internet for a few hours? Ms. Gabaldon updates her blog!

ETA 6: Evidently Ms. Gabaldon deleted all evidence of her hissyfit, but some wankas have screencaps in this thread.

ETA 7: [info]kate_nepevu has screencaps and the text of Gabaldon's posts here. And via [info]alchemynerd, more screencaps available here:

Thanks for all the links! :)

MOD REMINDER: Remember, my little wankas, we DO NOT troll the wank. Nor do we write fanfic after the author has specifically requested people not and post it in the comments here, no matter how tempting it may be. Carry on. oh god my inbox ow ow

*Just as a point of interest, I was a bookseller for 12 years, and had several customers tell me about the sex scenes in her books. Some were pro ("My friend told me to read these books for the sex scenes, and she was totally right, they are so hot, this is best thing to happen to my sex life in years!") and some were con ("What is up with all the sex all the time? Where's the story?"), but one thing you can't say about her books is that they're sexual-fantasy free. :D

Aside from everything else mentioned already, her books tend to come out every 5 years. She should be glad that there is fanfic showing up, it shows that people are still thinking about her characters rather than moving on to the next author.

Goddamn! This is why I never like to know anything about the IRL opinions of authors of books that I enjoy because they inevitably turn out to be gigantic douchewangs and it just taints their whole work from that point on.

I'm a composer. I couldn't make a living if I "borrowed" other peoples music - that's plagiarism and it's illegal.

I can't believe anyone could even say that with a straight face. I'm gonna listen to some Chopin mazurkas until the pain goes away.

The internet lawyering is hilarious. I love the argument that says that because Campbell v. Acuff-Rose doesn't specifically mention fanfiction, that it doesn't cover fanfiction.

I'm pretty sure that if you control-F'd the term "fanfiction" in whatever the monolithic entity they're calling "International Copyright Law" is, you wouldn't find it either. But that doesn't mean that it is specifically "not covered".

*eyeroll* Really? Look, if you don't want an audience to engage with your work--if you want to keep all your toys to yourself--then don't publish. That's the only way to guarantee people don't think things about your work. Problem solved!

Jamie Fraser...eighteenth century Scotland...time travel...wait a second...

Is he based on actor Frazer Hines and his portrayal of Jamie McCrimmon, Doctor Who's 18th century Scottish time-traveling pal? *wikis* Why, yes he is!

In 'The Outlandish Companion' Gabaldon says he is partly based on the character of Jamie McCrimmon from Doctor Who.

So she's a hypocrite as well as as an ignorant dorfus. Good to know.

From Eddie Louise's post:

Diana: FanFic a gray area in Copyright law.
FanFic Apologists: We only do it because we love the source material, and we only sell it for charity.

Except Gabaldon doesn't say it's a gray area. She says it's illegal, and the ficcers are the ones saying it's a gray area. Secondly, does she think that the two perspectives that she posted are contradictory or mutually exclusive? Because I'm not seeing any opposition. And thirdly, does she think it makes ficcers look bad to say "We love the original work and sometimes buy/sell fic for charity"? OH GOD HOW DARE THEY?

It is immediately apparent that most you bleating 'Jamie is fanfic' never saw the BBC TV series. Frazer Hines was way too short and wore his kilt way too long to have been the physical inspiration for the delicious Jamie Frazer. What's more, his Scot's accent was atrocious, he's a Sassenach!

He may have been a catalyst but certainly wasn't the ready made character.

Psst. Hate to break this to you, author lady, but your defenders are too dumb to live.

Dear All who think these are fictional characters, so you're free to do whatever you like,

These persons have become a part of my life. I know them. I laugh and cry with them. They more real to me than my second cousin who lives 5000 miles apart. Definitely more real than most of you faceless, nameless guys.

Considering that you seem to me some fictional characters on my monitor doesn't entitle me to steal your actual identity and reshape it as I desire.

And I haven't even created them. I think Diana has been very polite toward you.

Dear cake--

Yes, I've heard that point of view--and if an author feels that way, more power to them.

Certainly I don't think the people who write fan-fic are doing it with the set purpose of annoying me. (Or at least I _hope_ not! [g]) I don't reckon someone walking along the street who paused by my rosebush and cut half the blooms to take away would be doing it to injure me, either--in both cases, the perpetrator is doing what _they_ want, and totally ignoring the opinion (and property rights) of the person they're offending.

Not doing it on purpose doesn't mean they aren't doing it, I mean.

Because now fanfiction is the same as horticultural theft you guys.

This wank is only a couple of boxes short of a full card on the Anti-Fanfic Binfo Card

Keep it up, Gabaldon fans, it's not like it's rocket science! You should have already come up with "bad fan stories will make people not want to buy a writer's work!" and "you have to THINK of the CHILDREN!".

Complaining about morality of fanfic seems so old-fashioned. I can understand if somebody doesn't want to see fanfic for their works (though if it's because something like "I don't want anybody to think my characters are gay!!1!!" you may want to do an issue check), but calling fanfic in general immoral? Your works containing something that inspires others makes those others immoral? Not saying anything new here but I thought the puzzlement was worth repeating.

So...what I'm basically reading is that she doesn't want a fandom.

...How can any author NOT want a fandom? o.0

Is there a nice, handy list of the pro-fanfic and anti-fic published authors out there? That would be really nice. Perhaps it can go on the FWwiki?

We can even make a list of fanfic writers that hate fanfic!
1. Lee Goldberg
2. Diana Gabaldon (given her writing for Disney)

Eddie Louise: I find it 'icky' that some people like wet play in their sex lives - however, they don't do it in public so it has no effect on me. 'Icky' fan fic would also have no effect if it was not posted in a public place where it essentially 'lives' forever.

If "wet play" means what I think it does (Google isn't helpful, nor is UD), she's saying that writing fanfic is like leaving a huge, steaming Hot Carl on a writer's chest.

LOL forever.
