Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:author entitlement, authors, creator wank, doesn't mean what you think it means, fanfic, suck it up and deal, writers are often pompous douches, your kink is not okay

Diana Gabaldon, author of the wildly popular Outlander series, has an opinion on fan fiction: I think it’s immoral, I _know_ it’s illegal, and it makes me want to barf whenever I’ve inadvertently encountered some of it involving my characters.

Highlights include:

  • Writing fanfic is just like breaking into someone's house.
  • Fanfic is WAY WAY WAY TOO PORNY omg ick people have sexual fantasies!*
  • What to do about an auction offering fanfic to raise money for a cancer patient? She doesn't want to "seem heartless"! So she seeks advice in the comments. Which are mostly full of "Fanfic? I have never heard of such a despicable load of garbage! Also, CRUSH THAT CANCER PATIENT!"

ETA: Unpublished author Eddie Louise (who cannot write the word "shit" and seems to fail spectacularly at reading comprehension) offers fanfic writers A CHALLENGE! Accept it if you dare, sniveling pedo thieves!

ETA 2: Previously, Ms Gabaldon has said fanfic is like selling your children into white slavery. Well. Now. I don't even know what to do with that.

ETA 3: Smart Bitches, Trashy Books has some discussion on the topic.

ETA 4: And bookshop on LJ/DW has a rebuttal.

ETA 5: See what happens when I leave the sweet embrace of the internet for a few hours? Ms. Gabaldon updates her blog!

ETA 6: Evidently Ms. Gabaldon deleted all evidence of her hissyfit, but some wankas have screencaps in this thread.

ETA 7: [info]kate_nepevu has screencaps and the text of Gabaldon's posts here. And via [info]alchemynerd, more screencaps available here:

Thanks for all the links! :)

MOD REMINDER: Remember, my little wankas, we DO NOT troll the wank. Nor do we write fanfic after the author has specifically requested people not and post it in the comments here, no matter how tempting it may be. Carry on. oh god my inbox ow ow

*Just as a point of interest, I was a bookseller for 12 years, and had several customers tell me about the sex scenes in her books. Some were pro ("My friend told me to read these books for the sex scenes, and she was totally right, they are so hot, this is best thing to happen to my sex life in years!") and some were con ("What is up with all the sex all the time? Where's the story?"), but one thing you can't say about her books is that they're sexual-fantasy free. :D

So wildly popular I've never heard of it and I have borderline moved into libraries. [Thanks Sacramento Public Library!]

Adding names to my list of authors to never read. :|

Of course, we've seen it all before: the Anti-Fanfic Bingo Card was created in 2007.

And then otw_news held a series of posts, 1 for each line in the Bingo card. (The first seems to have lost the pretty graphic made by ciderpress .)

top row
2nd row
middle row
4th row
bottom row

Followed by a set of polls about people's favorite responses:
row 1, row 2, row 3, row 4, row 5

YOU KNOW WHAT WOULD MAKE THIS THE BESTEST WANK EVAR?!

If Nora Roberts showed up somewhere to comment on it.

That would make this wank truly the most awesome thing.

(Every time that woman says something awesome, it makes me want to go out and buy up her newest books, even though I would never read them -- not a much of a romance reader myself).

Maybe it's just that I've been lucky in my fandoms, but rants from creators about the evils of fandoms always come off as such... fascinating lunacy to me.

That, and I've been around fandom so long I feel the urge to pat them on the head and ask them if they are new. (Which, given most of the complainers are like twice my age is a weird feeling).

Ugh, I hit return before I was done. Charles Stross' remarks that made me LOL:

In summary: I am not a precious sparkly unicorn who is obsessed with the purity of his characters — rather, I am a glittery and avaricious dragon who is jealous of his steaming pile of gold. If you do not steal the dragon's gold, the dragon will leave you alone. Offer to bring the dragon more gold and the dragon will be your friend.

While I think she's being rediculous and silly, I think an author has every right to be mad about selling fanfic, even if it's being sold for a good cause. If an author wants to keep people from being able to do shitty things like the guy who tried to sell the Harry Potter lexicon, that means they sometimes have to put a stop to all fanfiction if they hear about some being sold. It wouldn't be hard for some sleazebag to argue "well you let this sale of your work go on, so you have no right to stop me from selling my book "dude quotes passages from this ladies book all in order with no original content except that each page starts with 'so then the book says'".

The amount of people commenting on her blog that they don't understand why anyone would write fanfiction is... it's actually making me kind of angry. Hey, there are people in the world with different tastes than your own! They may even enjoy things that you don't! Shocker, I know.

And remember, don't ever participate in any part of a particular field unless you want to become a professional in that field!

It's like going back in time: "What is up with using the "@" symbol before people's monikers, anyway?"

(Or to quote The IT Crowd, "are you from the past?)

All her arguments focus solely about fanfiction about books (I get that she's an author) but what about us who write for other mediums?

I know all those Mindsweeper/Tetris/Pong authors were totally trying to cash in for the hot porny smut. That Microsoft Paper clip...so hot and way too PORNY.

Why should I have to ask George Lucas for permission to post my Vader and Luke bonding story when he hasn't even read the vast majority of the LucasFilm licensed EU material?

Luckily when George Lucas refers to the "three pillars" of SW fandom, he calls himself the Father , Lucas Licensing president Howard Roffman the Son, and the fans the Holy Ghost, so I doubt he cares about my Anakin/Padme drabble that was more based on TPM novelization than it was on the movie. After all, I'm 1/23345375893785397349th of GOD.

Yes GL DID compare himself to God. LOL

On the one hand, I am sad.

On the other hand, I now feel oddly vindicated about reading the last few books and wondering if it was absolutely necessary to have that much rape. Yeah, yeah, 18th century, we get it, but.

Also, they've been tending a little gender-essentialist for my comfort.

So now I also know that she's a dipshit. Vindicated!

I'm glad for her second post - it prevents her looking like a total ignorant douchebag. It's funny how all the anti-fanfic ranters never, ever manage to come close to hitting on the actual reason for most fanfic - love. They're determined that fanfic writers are intellectually and morally bankrupt masturbators - without having the faintest scintilla of a clue as to what is obvious to anyone actually familiar with the fanfic world. Whatever you say about copyright (true) a feeling of invasion (valid) or execrable quality (often), you should understand people write and read fanfic out of love.

So the third post seems to boil down to:

- Art belongs to the world at large.
- People are inspired by many sources.
- A story's essence is its characters. (Highly debatable!)
- Characters are no less real for not having a bodily presence. (...Ahahaha, oh really.)
- Gabaldon says she is her evil villain personified and likes to gloat about it in her head while talking to her fans. (...Oooookay, moving on...)
- Characters actually are the person who created them. (.....Moving on)
- Anything that happens to her characters happens not to her characters but to her. (...Gosh, I hope she's okay with the things she's writing in her own canon; some of them sound very painful.)
- Fanfiction damages her because people incorporate it into their views about canon. (Because she is insecure about her writing being compared to others.)
- It distressed her when someone thinks a fanfic scene was part of canon. (Ditto insecurity - knowing that others can write her series as well or better than her and people will not know the difference.)
- She thinks fanfic writers haven't a legal leg to stand on. (But is refraining from saying "illegal!" with the fervour of before).
- Belated fanfiction policy, phrased in a deliberately passive-aggressive way in context.
- TOTAL LACK OF AN APOLOGY to the people she called husband-stealers/sexual slavers/burglars/stalkers/creepy paedophile neighbours/etc.

Not classy at all.
