Entry tags:author entitlement, authors, creator wank, doesn't mean what you think it means, fanfic, suck it up and deal, writers are often pompous douches, your kink is not okay

Diana Gabaldon, author of the wildly popular Outlander series, has an opinion on fan fiction: I think it’s immoral, I _know_ it’s illegal, and it makes me want to barf whenever I’ve inadvertently encountered some of it involving my characters.

Highlights include:

  • Writing fanfic is just like breaking into someone's house.
  • Fanfic is WAY WAY WAY TOO PORNY omg ick people have sexual fantasies!*
  • What to do about an auction offering fanfic to raise money for a cancer patient? She doesn't want to "seem heartless"! So she seeks advice in the comments. Which are mostly full of "Fanfic? I have never heard of such a despicable load of garbage! Also, CRUSH THAT CANCER PATIENT!"

ETA: Unpublished author Eddie Louise (who cannot write the word "shit" and seems to fail spectacularly at reading comprehension) offers fanfic writers A CHALLENGE! Accept it if you dare, sniveling pedo thieves!

ETA 2: Previously, Ms Gabaldon has said fanfic is like selling your children into white slavery. Well. Now. I don't even know what to do with that.

ETA 3: Smart Bitches, Trashy Books has some discussion on the topic.

ETA 4: And bookshop on LJ/DW has a rebuttal.

ETA 5: See what happens when I leave the sweet embrace of the internet for a few hours? Ms. Gabaldon updates her blog!

ETA 6: Evidently Ms. Gabaldon deleted all evidence of her hissyfit, but some wankas have screencaps in this thread.

ETA 7: [info]kate_nepevu has screencaps and the text of Gabaldon's posts here. And via [info]alchemynerd, more screencaps available here:

Thanks for all the links! :)

MOD REMINDER: Remember, my little wankas, we DO NOT troll the wank. Nor do we write fanfic after the author has specifically requested people not and post it in the comments here, no matter how tempting it may be. Carry on. oh god my inbox ow ow

*Just as a point of interest, I was a bookseller for 12 years, and had several customers tell me about the sex scenes in her books. Some were pro ("My friend told me to read these books for the sex scenes, and she was totally right, they are so hot, this is best thing to happen to my sex life in years!") and some were con ("What is up with all the sex all the time? Where's the story?"), but one thing you can't say about her books is that they're sexual-fantasy free. :D

Ok then.

Am I the only one that would be delighted to have a fandom and fanfiction of her original characters? Wank, badly written porn and lulz included?

Not naming names, but I have a friend whose first novel is coming out this fall who feels that way.

I'm torn. On one hand, I think that'd be the most awesome thing ever. On the other, I have a trapped as fourteen year old character that's already gotten some super creepy statements.

So I guess what I'm saying is, on one hand: yay fanfic, on the other: possible chance of accidentally developing mental powers, killing someone with mind, and then being on the run from the government who want to harness me as a weapon.

Third hand: oh my god I have a back button.

Yeah, I think it would be awesome to see. And part of me wonders how authors would react to seeing people roleplay their characters in large panfandom RPs.

*raises hand*

My husband and I have been running a silly little webcomic for a few years that has gained a small but pretty nice fandom. Every now and then I get some pearl-clutching e-mail about how OH NOES someone is writing/drawing PORN of my characters OMG, and I should DO SOMETHING. And I just laugh. I have friends who draw porn of my characters. I don't care. They're not my babies; they're a bunch of weird fictional cat-people who run around in my head, so, whatevs.

I always thought fanfic of something I wrote would be how I'd know I'd made it as a writer.

Bad fanfic would mean I'd really made it!

Nope.

I wouldn't read it, for fear that some of it would worm its way into my unconscious. And also, I wouldn't want to read something portraying, say, my geeky white knight type as a goat rapist. But the fact it was there would make me feel warm and fuzzy.

Back in the day (in high school) I had a very popular fan-character. She was a total Mary Sue but because this was a drama-rich fandom full of bunches of other teenage girls and I was a semi-BNF, I had tons of fans. People I didn't know wrote fanfic about my character. One person even wrote a paper about ONE OF MY FANFICS. FOR SCHOOL. (She was graded on it. She got an A! Seriously.)

All of this delighted me at 15. I suspect that now at 27, it would delight me no less. It's FUN to have people care about what you create.

This may have been a significant contributing factor to the fact that he is my boyfriend now.

I admit that if I ever became a big-name author I would have to resist the urge to troll my fandom. (I would also use the creative commons licensing like Butcher, so.)

I would also cheerfully give terrible answers to questions in interviews, implying that x or y character was supposed to be male/female rather than the gender they are, and so on.

I would love it. One of the ways I get myself excited about my original work is imagining what the resulting fandom would be like and all the ways I'd shit-stir it. For one world, I have two leads, one male and one female, who are absolutely not meant to be romantically involved at all, and in fact the male character is happily involved with a very wonderful lady during story-time. But I predict that if this story ever took off with a fandom (unlikely, since it's meant to be a single book, two at the most...with perhaps some companion songs), people would try shipping the two leads together and probably arranging for some horrible fate to befall the male lead's girlfriend. XD

Heck, I plan on secretly writing fanfiction of my original characters if I ever get published. There's a pairing that I'm very fond of that I'd never get away with making canon in a kids book, so fanfiction ho!

It's my secret wish as an author that one day I'll get terribly self-righteous little kids writing me about how pissed off the author of my books would be if they found out I was shipping that pairing. It would be adorable and hilarious.

I would be terrible and make up a new screenname and write fanfiction of my own original fic under that screenname. And then trollishly go around proclaiming my fanfic to be as canon as canon. Because I am a very naughty person.

Far from it, I'd say!

I've gotten a decent amount of fanart for my own characters (I've been making a webcomic for a couple of years now)... no fanfiction. I'd be pleased beyond words to get any, though! Having written fanfiction myself back in the day (before I got into university and stopped having time or mental energy for it), I only wrote it for series that I felt I had an emotional connection with, and whose characters I understood well enough to feel comfortable (or at least continually intrigued) to write them. The thought that someday, someone else might feel that kind of connection to my own stories and characters is one that makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. C:

I would be totally tempted to read it for the giggle factor.

Of course, that wouldn't be good for fandom, I'd be tempted to use canon to invalidate everyone's favorite ships, just because. Then again, I'll probably do that by accident anyway, as my tastes in romance are not fandom's taste in romance.

(I'm wondering how they'll find enough of the All-Important Menz in my almost exclusively female stories to write het or slash, and fully expecting them to turn the "Teenage girl seduces and kills an adult authority figure because she's locked up indefinitely, frustrated, angry, and really not a nice person" story into something somehow romantic.)

It's kind of funny you'd mention that, actually. I'm not personally a big fan of porn or even shipping in general, but I decided early on that my webcomic would have no canon relationships so that people could ship whatever they wanted.

...so yes. I have.
