Entry tags:fandom_wank's thoughts on yaoi, movie wank, pixar, reviews, someone is wrong on the internet!, stop sharing your thoughts, writers are often pompous douches

Wank machine keeps on rollin'
1. Pixar makes incredible, mind-blowing third movie in Toy Story series.
2. Rotten Tomatoes logs over 130 reviews - all positive.
3. Toy Story 3 gets it's first (so far, only) bad reviews.
4. Internet explodes. (Also here.)

The wank seems to be focused on Armond White's review, as he is known for seemingly giving any review that goes against the general consenus. (He inexplicably seems in favour of Transformers 2, for instance.) He also doesn't appear to have actually watched the movie (identifying Hamm as a villain.) His negative review was actually predicted by a number of commenters in this earlier article, asking readers to predict where Toy Story 3 would end up on the Tomatometer rating.

It's all very dramatic, with wank in every corner. But of course, the most important Toy Story-related argument is and always will always be: Buzz/Jessie or Woody/Jessie?*

*Anyone's who's seen the movie will know the right answer to this.

Unrelated but sometimes I think I'm the only person in the world who loathes Pixar movies.

I don't loathe them, but I don't think they're the best thing in the world. I guess I liked The Incredibles but all the others were not my cup of tea. (But I did hate Wall-E. Grrr robots!)

I think the problem is that I hate 3D animation and they're the ones who really got the ball rolling on that.

If it makes you feel better, I don't loathe them, but I also don't universally think they're God's gift to animation. Like Toy Story: saw it, thought it was ok. Never saw 2, no interest in seeing 3. Finding Nemo bored me. The Incredibles is, I think, the only Pixar movie I actually really enjoyed enough to buy.

I don't loathe them -- I think most of them are pretty good movies, which are rare enough. I don't think they're the second coming either, though. I think the people flipping out over the idea that Toy Story 3 might not get a 100% tomatometer rating were pretty damn funny.

I thought about it and it's 3D animation that I have a problem with. Toy Story could have been flat though and I wouldn't have given a shit.

I generally enjoy most Pixar movies, but I could do without the "How dare you criticize or even mention the incredibly annoying and problematic under-representation of women and girls in Pixar's films" attitude of many Pixar fans.

Pixar doesn't have enough women in key creative roles. That's mostly because the animation industry in general is sorely lacking in females. I hope that'll change in the future. The more girls get into animation, the faster the change will come.

...I'm in art school because I want to be one of those girls.

Yeeeah. :-\

Toy Story 3 did pass the Bechdel test, but only barely, and most of the best roles in Pixar movies are male ones.

I can take them or leave them. "The Incredibles" and "Monsters Inc." are the only ones I enjoyed enough to watch more than once. And I really disliked "Finding Nemo."

The Toy Story franchise and Wall-E are the only Pixar movies I can stomach. I'm not a huge fan of 3D animation as opposed to 2D, but if it can be done well.

Don't loath them, but don't think they're all that great, either. And all the hype has created a backlash when it comes to me - I've gone out of my way to NOT see Up because of that... It might be silly, but eh.
