HELP HELP I'M BEING CULTURALLY APPROPRIATED!
Small, but wanky. Swanky?

willtherebecake makes a post to customers_suck relating an unfortunate incident in the aisles of the Walmart in which they work. She also happens to be a fan of FMA: Brotherhood, and in the midst of describing how silly Roy's moustache is, mentions that there are tons of otaku at Walmart.

hontou jumps in to froth:

"You know what I think? I think the second incident did not happen. I think you just wanted an excuse to talk about how ignorant of the culture you're trying so hard to appropriate "otaku" you are.

But that's just what I think. Thank you for single-handedly reinforcing every stereotype of a Walmart employee!

P.S. Unless part of your store is floating in the Pacific - AISLE."

"I think it's wrong and yeah, kind of entitled, to act like English speakers have the "right" to change a Japanese word's meaning just because they can't be bovvered to learn the proper Glorious Nihongo for "big fan.""

"Just because many white people mangle a language for their own purposes doesn't mean it's okay."

"If she almost had you there, work just a little bit harder to get over your own ever so poor, abused sensibilities and try to understand where [info]hontou is coming from. Then apologize."

"Japanese people borrowing English words is not the same as English speakers "borrowing" Japanese words, though. American culture and language are not in danger of being destroyed by an influx of invading cultures and ideals." (emphasis mine)

But the most important question of all: is hontou Japanese?

Thanks, wank_report!

ETA: FMA: Brotherhood spoilers, btw.
ETA 2: Update from walraute, and sf_drama post.

Wouldn't that make the Japanese the ones who shouldn't be doing it then? Since it's dangerous to their very way of life.

The best part of this is that it's all taking place in customers_suck. Of all damn places to have a fight about otaku culture, it's in a comm that could not have less to do with it.

I'm sure Japan is absolutely furious. (Let's see... apaato, manshon, donmai, baito, nooto, sandobaggu, kaningu, roman... they're not only borrowed and adapted to Japanese pronunciation, but their meanings are also different from those of the origial English terms. Oops.)

"Japanese people borrowing English words is not the same as English speakers "borrowing" Japanese words, though. American culture and language are not in danger of being destroyed by an influx of invading cultures and ideals."

Japanese language and culture has been "endangered" by invading foreign cultures and ideals since the 16th century, and somehow they're still around. (Well, there was that period of Japan going hikikomori but even then the Rangaku was still around. *is starting to ship Netherlands/Japan*) I'll be the first one to say that American cultural imperialism or whatever can have adverse effects on local cultures, but really...

Hmm, because this wank is getting into cultural differences would it possibly belong in [info]unfunnybusiness? I'm on the fence. I do know this argument is about as old and neverending as the good 'ol Subs vs. Dubs one.

Slightly OT: I once had a vanity plate that said 'Otaku'. It was kind of amusing because Delaware's plate motto was 'The First State', so it read as if I was the first state Otaku.

Since you beat me to posting I'm just going to add in the part that develops when sf_drama finds it, copied from my writeup:

Even more fun results when sf_drama gets ahold of this, with endless discussion of the term otaku, what does it mean in a Japanese context, what does it mean to American fans, etc., what is lolita about, talking about words with different meanings. Much is made about how one should listen to someone who lives in Japan when they tell you about it. In the end, it's a very skillful trolling job there done by the OP, in sf_drama. Why, you might ask?

[info]hontou, defended by many for her knowledge and defense of her culture, well, isn't actually Japanese. Nope, she's a Yale undergrad (and a Choate graduate, which puts that extra little bit of ick onto the above comments) who attended an international school there. She doesn't even live in Japan. In fact, she's apparently a little infamous in j-pop fandom herself.

This wank makes me wonder: is there a term for the cultural/national version of mansplaining? I suppose "whitesplaining" would work, but it almost needs its own term. Americansplaining?

Anyway, the longer this goes on, the more hilarious it gets. Someone really ought to break it to [info]hontou that this use of "otaku" isn't exactly a SRS BUSINESS CULTURAL APPROPRIATION!! issue, seeing as I've never seen an actual Japanese person react to it with anything worse than cringing or chuckling. Calling yourself an "otaku" makes you look like an idiot, but it doesn't exactly make you an imperialist pig-dog.

Whenever there is any debate about the English language using borrowed words I always first think of this quote:

“The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don’t just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary.”

I must spend too much time reading anti-racism blogs, because all the people bitching over the term "White people" had me seriously confused for a bit.

Dammit, why do my fellow FMA fans have to drag their fandom into unrelated posts like this? We're going to be as bad as Bleach fandom soon....

Japanese people borrowing English words is not the same as English speakers "borrowing" Japanese words, though. American culture and language are not in danger of being destroyed by an influx of invading cultures and ideals.

I was profoundly unsurprised by this point of view until I realized that the person expressing it was American. In which case I can't even begin to understand why she thinks that, unless she knows some conservative Japanese people and takes everything they say at face value.

If she wants to talk about cultures within Japan that are in danger of being wiped out/assimilated, she should look into the Ainu or the Ryukyuan people.

I tend to view "cultural appropriation" similar to how I view "fan works" since they both involve borrowing "shiny" ideas. So yeah, I think Japan is doing something right. The more popular a culture is, the more it is imitated ala - Imitation (even when mangled) is the greatest form of flattery.

And (lol!) Japan has non-Japanese (wannabe Japanese, at that) fighting for its... honor? Yep, Japan's doing something right all right.

This is too close to real life. A few weeks back, I was part of a group socializing. One couple began a long rant explaining/defending Japanese culture. They were responding to three people who had just returned from living in Japan for several years. The defenders - yeah, got all their info from anime.

OBVIOUSLY this person has never seen Back to the Future Part II or Johnny Mnemonic. Man, we'll be laughing come 1995.

Bah, the English use of "otaku" isn't too far off from its Japanese meaning of "basement-dwelling loser who faps to cartoons" anyway, when used in a tongue-in-cheek sense.

At least it hasn't had its meaning utterly lost in translation like some words do. Take "hentai". Started off as a word meaning perverted/abnormal person, got abbreviated to "H" which became a euphamism for porn or sex, English-speaking fandom confused the two and started calling anime porn "hentai", then took "H" too but insisted on spelling it with the phonetic Japanese as "ecchi" and used it to mean "fanservice", and then Japanese people started using "ero" instead of "H" to refer to explicit stuff anyway...

(I totally didn't get this information from some article on the history of eroge. Nooooo way.)
