We call it the aristocrats
Dave Willis, author of the webcomic Shortpacked, posts a comic about two outspoken, popular(?) fandom bloggers who apparently are not big on Beast Wars. It is not very flattering.

These two bloggers (one Tom Croom, and one Joey Snackpants) soon show up in the comments to sow seeds of dissent. Or something.

Tom Croom is in a webcomic!
You clearly don't understand the true definition of "straw man".
Tom Croom will tell you why Beast Wars sucks if you donate $250 to the charity of his choice!
YOU CANNOT TRICK DAVE WILLIS.
Joey Snackpants still thinks Beast Wars sucks!

And as a bonus: This all started when because someone didn't get invited to a Transformers convention. I mean, have you seen their panel?

ETA: Apparently there's a Shortpacked tag.

Then I would bring up the point that, after working in professional entertainment for YEARS, I’ve seen the most successful national bands grow in popularity by knowing when to let a local act open up for them.

Ahahahahahaaaaaaa good one oh wait he's serious.

Well, I know 2 things from reading this wank:

1) I am going to dig out my Beast Wars DVDs and start rewatching them tonight.

2) I am staying far, far away from anything these idiots are doing at GenCon. Even if their event is free.

Yanno, what is it about Beast Wars that really brings out the wankiness in Transformers fandom? I've been wondering this for years and to this day I've yet to really find a good answer.

[Side tangent: I mean, as much as I love BW -and to a lesser extent, also Beast Machines to a point-, even I admit it has its faults and isn't by any means the Perfect Series. But c'mon... 'Code of Hero'. I'm not gonna lie: I found Dinobot's death more tearjerking and meaningful than Optimus Prime's in the 1986 movie.]

Oh, and trying to rope a charity into this? Smells like a last ditch effort to make himself look good, even when his attitude elsewhere suggests otherwise. Stay classy, my man. Stay classy.

These two nitwits CHARGE MONEY for their fan panel? For real? And people fall for this? I mean, I've been going to cons since I was, guh, twelve, and that's a fair amount of cons over the *mumbles*18years*mumbles* I've been at cons, and I've seen people pay for banquets, and autographs, and the occasional special sit-down with some big big guest (usually the GOH) and I've never seen ANYONE pay money to go to a fan panel. The closest thing thing to that I can think of is paying for supplies at a costuming/makeup/some other crafting learning panel thing.

What is Beast Wars? Why does David Willis hate them so much for disliking it? Why do they have to give a point-by-point of why it sucks, and why do they care enough to give one in a panel, anyway?

On the other hand, I'll totally jump on the bandwagon of, "Charging for a panel? Ridiculous!"

And now for my comment rebuttal that no one cares about.
[info]seiberwing
2010-07-23 10:02 pm UTC (link)

The very concept of Beast Wars is terrible. I’m sorry you can’t see that.

Transformers are robots in disguise. Their alt-modes must serve some purpose. Either disguise in an alien environment, or improved aerodynamics or something. On a prehistoric world with no other sentient beings, transforming into a collection of animals that didn’t even live at the same time period, colored unrealisticaly, and bristling with weaponry fails on so many levels. Any creature with a reasonable intellect can tell that these things aren’t real “beasts” — but there aren’t any intelligent natives around to notice! There is _no_ reason for them to have beast modes. It fails the basic conceit of the entire Transformers line.

I don’t know if that has anything to do with the arguments raised people you so hypocritically mock in your strip, Willis, but that is the fundamental reason why Beast Wars is a terrible show.

WATCH. THE DAMN. SHOW. The entire reason they took on 'beast modes' was because they needed protection from the high energon levels causing them to have sparking epileptic fits every time they went outside for too long. This is explained in the first episode. For that matter it also allows them to get around far better than wheels, due to the planet having no roads yet. Oh, FYI--the originals transformed before coming to Earth and needing to be 'in disguise' in the first place, not that this did much because they weren't very good at not being out in public being all roboty.

If he doesn't like it, fine, I didn't much care for RiD because it managed to make a crossdressing Autobot-seducing Megatron boring. But get your facts straight.

You missed this one, where his douchebaggery gets even douchier.

really thought this would be over by now. I should be posting more stories from my weekend in Colorado… but I guess not. LOL

I am reposting part of my reply I made to someone in one of my other posts as part of this update to address some of the really inane shit I have been reading in the past twenty-four hours.

So all you zany Transformers fans still lurking around by blog – read on!

The core of all this (lest we forget) is a bunch of fanboys arguing about toys and cartoons from their childhood on the Internet. SERIOUS business folks.

People asked for my opinion about said toys and cartoons – I have explained that I reserve that conversation/material for the panels we provide as *entertainment* at a number of conventions.

After further pressing – I offered to explain the thought process (of why Beast Wars sucks) IF something good could come from it beyond opening a whole new debate on the Internet… thus I chose a charity to push for. One, I might add, I feel very strongly about.

I’m just a guy with a blog who likes to write. On my blog, I tend to share my opinions. It seems a majority of the BotCon attendees who have found my blog and keep posting here, though, are “those” fans that the rest of us make fun of… over-obsessive to the point of looking for a flame war or just being a troll.

People keep talking about facts and opinions. Here are some facts:

* I wrote a review for a fandom convention (trade show) for a pop culture website.
* I posted my opinions on my blog… as I tend to do.
* I never went to Transformers fan forums bitch and moan.
* I never wrote a webcomic satirizing any of this.

I took a silly Internet argument and tried to make SOME good of it… and as a result, learned that 10% of the Transformers fans from BotCon (that I come across) who populate the Internet “get it” – and the other 90% really, really need to get a life.

So keep posting! I haven’t had this much focus on my little corner of the Internet since the Ford fiasco. But who cares, right? I’m just a guy with a blog with an opinion that NO ONE cares about… yet here people are posting.

You “people” should think about that. :)

For those of you that have made donations for Give Kids the World… THANK YOU. [...]If you have made a donation, and I have your email confirmation, feel free to call me.[...] When I call, I will give you a five minute explanation of why, without a doubt, Beast Wars sucks and I will be more than happy to hear why you think otherwise.

He really thinks people will want to pay him to tell them why a show sucks, when we can hear that for free elsewhere on the internet or god forbid just draw our own conclusions. What drives this madman?
