Why did his store go out of business? I can't imagine.
(Bulk of this writeup taken from [info]wank_report-- thank you!)

Carl Anderson, webcomic writer, posts a comic in which he blames American Doctor Who fans for local retailers failing since they all buy on eBay. >:( ...And, calls them stupid, lazy, fat and a few other things, and claims that they deserve to get their show cancelled!

Hysterical, right?

It gets posted as part of a series of links to the Doctor Who LJ comm.

[info]maypanic writes a post in response pointing out that not everyone actually has a local retailer of Doctor Who merchandise. Given the insults, she decides to boycott his comic and any stores of his.

The comments are mostly agreement and discussion on bad experiences with stores... but wait! Suddenly, a few anonymous commenters come along, mentioning that Carl had a shop that sold Doctor Who merchandise (which no-one bought). But also, comparing the OP and friends to Trekkies, Tweens, claiming they have no sense of humor and are just like Twilight fans (harsh...)

As one of the commenters points out, some of these anonymous criticisms are phrased suspiciously similarly to things Carl Anderson said in a now-deleted post (some excerpted lines here.) Hmm.

Carl himself makes an appearance, blaming the lazy fans who "gave Who fandom a bad name" for the failure of his business. He claims that May and friends should stop taking things so seriously and:

You and the others posters only proved what many, including the older Who fans, think of Nu-Who fans. And it gives us fans a bad name, and makes us ashamed that you latched onto our show, just because of David Tennant.

Also, he didn't post those other things on May's journal; perish the thought. It was his good buddy and former customer who did it. Naturally.

He posts again to his site (comments turned off) claiming he may have been a bit harsh. As apologies go, it lacks something...

Anyhow, my little rant got attention on some “livejournal” fanfic 10th Doc/Wose... oops I mean Rose slashie-ship blogs, and so they went on the attack, taking my ranted jibes personally, as if I had just done something unspeakable to their My Little Pony collections, or I had wiped my ass on their Edward Cullen bedspreads.

This post was also linked to the Doctor Who comm. The response so far is best summed up by [info]kimber_mcleod:

Yeah, that makes me want to run right out and spend ALL my hard earned money on his merchandise! With that kind of savvy sales pitch to a target audience I'm sure he'll have an unprecedented increase in sales overnight!

ETA: Carl has now edited his "apology" post. It's not really an improvement.

I still cannot believe some people fell for that. Seriously, you got pissed over that? Wow, no wonder people make fun of certain fan-groups. You take shit way too seriously for your own healths. It’s just a freaking show.

You all just made Doctor Who fans look worse than Twlight fanatics. Well done… (Taste the sarcasm)

- from a real (British) Doctor Who fan, not some Tennant fangirl.
