Confused Matthew vs 2001: A Space Odyssey vs Chase vs Confused Matthew
A few months back, the enigmatic Confused Matthew reviewed the classic 2001: A Space Odyssey. The 3 part video review involved a lot of "This ISN'T A FILM! It's an ART PROJECT!" and "Land scape......lands scape.....land scape....I heart HAL.......colours......space foetus."

People respond to his review and Confused Matthew responds in turn and it all goes quite well.

Until Chase posts a nine part video screed in which he takes the review personally and uses one massive tone argument.

Confused Matthew responds. After a two part video response, Confused Matthew posted a video saying he was halting the reviews in fear of indeed becoming too personal.

Until today, when he posted part 3.

Grab the popcorn, sit back, and watch.

Dude, reviewers, LET IT GO! I had to put up with this enough in art school!

I haven't bothered with the other videos, but I had the patience to watch half of Confused Mathews first response which is just like I had the patience to watch half of 2001. I don't think he's been exposed to the horrors called video art* (which I don't think that 2001 qualifies). I have zero patience for going through all the Caring Too Much debates (go write a term paper already) so I don't know if anyone actually talks about that. However there is actually a piece where a painter (can't remember who) sits in a chair and stares at a painting for hours before making the final stroke. However, it's shot from one angle.

*I ♥ Pipiloti Rist. Also, have some Salvador Dali and Luis Bunuel weirdness (NSFW).

I've mentioned elsewhere, but Confused Matthew can often be the epitome of Completely Missing the Point when it comes to the stuff he reviews (see his ridiculous quibbles regarding The Lion King for an example).

I'll stick with Nostalgia Critic, Nostalgia Chick, and my web reviewer crush, Linkara.

"and my web reviewer crush, Linkara."

Oh good, it's not just me. I feel like such a dirty old cradle robber for squeeing over him.

I squee over him too, he's awesome. And I don't even know western comic books. I still enjoy his reviews.

I really shouldn't be surprised as I am that there's fanart.

Cute.

Those guys plus Red Letter Media are favorites of mine (although Red Letter Media is considerably edgier, in a 'the narrator is you sterotypical Trekkie/serial killer' type way).

Me either! God, I hope it comes out this weekend, I've been promising my cousin that I will force him to watch the reviews and having all three would be awesome. :3

I admit that I couldn't get into the Red Letter Media reviews...which I hated, because the reviews themselves were great and really fascinating! And even the little serial killer comments weren't that off-putting, but once we got to the woman tied up and screaming in the basement part it all took a nosedive straight into unfunny for me, and it squicked me out too much to watch anymore.
I recognize the fact that this is MY damage, however, and don't judge others for liking it. The reviews are fantastic! (Whhhhyyyy was that necessary? ;_;) Sorry for the thoughts on yaoi...

Eh, it's funny for me because she escapes in Attack of the Clones, and the trailer for Revenge of the Sith shows her coming back, armed with a machette (serial killer comedy wouldn't be funny if the killer didn't get what's coming to him. Morality play FTW?) And I really like the way he digs into the details about why the movies suck.

YMMV of course.

Huh. That kind of makes me interested again then, because I actually really did like the reviews themselves. And knowing that the killer may get his cummumpance...yeah, I think I may check it out again! Kinda wish others had mentioned that instead of mocking me for feeling disturbed by it now, but thanks! You've actually made me feel better about the whole thing!

I didn't like the woman-in-the-basement parts either. They didn't squick me out so much, but I didn't find them funny or entertaining at all and didn't need to see them a second time.
Fortunately, in the "Attack of the Clones" review those clips are always at the end of the youtube parts, so they're easy to skip if you want to watch the rest. Just stop the video as soon as the woman shows up and start the next one.

I was slightly taken aback when he gave "The Sixth Sense" as proof that he likes films which "make you think to understand them", and that's as someone who is often really dense about the meanings of films. (Then again, I liked 2001 and Evangelion even though they made no freaking sense, so perhaps my judgment is suspect)

I think a lot of 2001's strength is as a work of visual art, but I don't see that as a negative. Some films are more story-focused than others, is all.

But I couldn't make it through the guy's Spirited Away review either. (Animism, motherfucker! Do you speak it?!)

I tried watching his review of "The Lion King" yesterday. It was "I hate Simba! Why should we like Simba? He's a little shit!" ad nausea with no real analysis.

I took a class on Kubrick's films over the summer, and one of my papers was about how 2001 is so visual as to make it nearly inaccessible to people (like me) who are not visually oriented at all. I don't think this is a bad thing, it's just an "is what it is" thing. The class made me appreciate it as a film, but if I'm going to watch Kubrick for fun, I'm gonna pick a different movie.

On the "missing the point" thing..I totally agree. Don't even get me started on his review of The Incredibles.
