Entry tags:authors, fandom: doctor who, reviews, writers are often pompous douches

Does everyone know what time it is?
IT'S WHO TIME!!! This report was shamelessly snagged from [info]wank_report. *throws cheese to mousie* I thought it was time for some more author rage. Enjoy!

FYI: I have screencaps of most of this so let me know if anything goes 'missing'.

Author Paul Magrs (as in published, hired-for-money author of real books, thank you) gets the cruelest most entitled review ever written in the history of all humanity. http://unreality-sf.net/reviews/doctorwho/2/findreplace.html

Naturally, Magrs expresses outrage on Twitter. As published authors should always do. http://twitter.com/paulmagrs/status/26729418277 After all, how many books has that guy written? http://twitter.com/paulmagrs/status/26730575254 How many have YOU?

The author of review apologizes. http://brendan-moody.livejournal.com/317662.html

Too late, buddy. Magrs still has chafed butt. http://twitter.com/paulmagrs/status/27030688395 You see, Magrs loves fan dialogues with real fans, but not mean ones. Why can't you be civil like him. http://twitter.com/paulmagrs

Others weigh in.

This report is brought to you by Doctor Who fandom: wanking since 1963.

EDIT: Comments of interest-

Magrs continues to miss the point of reviewers

Wow, classy. And he totally isn't butthurt, you guys--the review was just too dull and dismissive for him!

It kind of rubs me the wrong way that the reviewer actually goes and apologizes for his review. It's a review not a press release, and as such it should say the truth and not try to not hurt the authors feelings.

Thought about it quite a bit more and - I don't care who the reviewer is. So long as their reviews aren't dull, grudging, or ill-informed

Oh, yes, that's much better.

He had to work in an addendum so the opinions of people who hadn't written any books but did like his could still be valid. As long as they're not "grudging"! [???]

Wow. What would he do with an actual, bad review? Run crying to his mommy? Sue for libel?

"What I don't like are boring, badly-written or unhelpful reviews - or pompous ones, or ones with hidden agendas or overt agendas, or ones that don't really engage very interestingly with the material, or ones where it's obvious the reviewer hasn't taken enough time or effort, or reviews that feel mean-spirited or ungenerous. The review I remarked on seemed a bit dull and sweeping in the dismissive stuff it was saying." (bolding by me)

What the... Badly-written? Unhelpful? Dude, you're a Published Author, it's not your readers' place to help you with your writing. This guy would fit in perfectly at fanficrants. Though come to think of it, I don't think I've seen any ffrants review ranter sink so low as to complain about a review being "boring" and "dull"...

For some reason it puts me in mind of the first "Evening with Kevin Smith." When he's talking about his argument with Tim Burton, and he mentions getting a ranty call from one of Burton's staff and then getting another one shortly after.
I'm indifferent to both those guys, so I'm not picking sides, but in my head, all I hear from this guy is Smith's impression of Burton after the first call. "Ooh! Ooh! I thought of something else! He's ugly and his momma dresses him funny!" (paraphrased, it's been a while) That sort of "wait! wait! I gotta get one more zinger in so that I'm the winner in this nonexistant debate!"

I was getting this odd, Fanfiction Rants vibe, so I looked up who Iris Wildthyme is supposed to be.

Then I realized why.

Main series character gets equivalent parallel character.
Adventures parallel the original adventures, but better.
Really her adventures are more true than the original character's.
You ought to love her far more than the original character.
She even has a fancy name.
Unusual companions - more so than the original character's.
Eventually she's better than anything from the original stuff.

*sigh*

I want more enthusiastic, vocal readers and fewer professional critics in the world, actually..

I don't care who the reviewer is. So long as their reviews aren't dull, grudging, or ill-informed

So, you don't like professional critics... but you want reviewers that are well-informed in their subject and experienced enough to write engaging, impartial reviews. OF COURSE!

Well, if they've never written anything, they can't very well have written a bad review, can they now? Now stop complaining about the imaginary review and get back to your Suething. *Chases away whining author with too much time on his hands*
