Personally, I think it sounds a lot like the clack of lonely keyboards.
If two insult-slinging philosophers wank infinitely over the Banach-Tarski paradox in xkcd_rss, does it make a sound?

(Screencap, since as an RSS feed, the link will eventually become defunct.)

Holy Jesus on a stick, that's a lot of argument over something I don't give a flying fuck about. Look at 'em go.

"Isn't a preconceived (but possibly untrue) notion an intuition? That's what I mean by intuition anyway."

Um...

I just got back from a math midterm and this is practically the first thing I see on the internet.

They're wanking about measure theory. I think they just made my semester.

This is model theory 101 -- have you taken such a course? I doubt it, by the sounds of it.

Dying forever now. This is so amazing.

Let me chime in with the "Oh God, math wank".

I think what amuses me the most about XKCD is that despite the fact I'm a total idiot about math and physics, I still get most of jokes just by virtue of being addicted to wikihopping. So basically "Banach-Tarski paradox" doesn't really mean anything to me, but the "cut thing A into pieces and reassemble them in a specific way and you get two A" is still known to me.

Then again, maybe having a Math teacher for a father leaves me a freak of nature anyway, considering I found Noein easy to follow :x

This is amazing. I love it.

There are many properties one can notice about finite sets. Some of these properties just can't be extended to arbitrary sets (e.g. no finite set is a strict subset of itself). Some of them can be extended (e.g. the cardinality of a subset is at most the cardinality of its superset). Sometimes the extension yields weird results which conflict with our physical intuitions. The Banach-Tarski construction shows that the axiom of choice is one such extension.

That's all I'm fucking saying, man. That's it. That's all. Nothing else. Nothing about the physical world and the mathematical world and whatever. That's fucking it. Jesus Christ.

WHY IS THAT SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND, PEOPLE?

But my favorite is the guy who titles his EPIC comment, "Sometimes explaining a joke makes it funnier?"

Sometimes that may be the case, sweetie, but if it takes you that many greek letters? Probably not. (It's pretty adorable that you tried, though.)

The Banach–Tarski paradox is a theorem in set theoretic geometry which states that a solid ball in 3-dimensional space can be split into a finite number of non-overlapping pieces, which can then be put back together in a different way to yield two identical copies of the original ball.

I thought math was supposed to make sense.

Okay, somebody explain the paradox to a math-idiot here, please. How can you take something, cut it into pieces, and make two identical versions of it? They would be smaller because there's less material to go around, right? And if they're smaller, they can't be identical!
