Sorority life is a popular dress-up/strategy facebook game, with its own little official forum, where people get together to rant, interact with each other, squee, and, of course, wank.

Apparently, some people made links to get unreleased 'glam' (dresses, purses, etc, that you can put on your avatar) before anyone else. People get upset and say this is very, very wrong. Cue for esettle0 to come in, on page nine, and tell the players to stop being so uptight and have a life. Wank ensues for 48 pages, which includes gems like sort of comparing stealing pixels to rape, it's just a beta and Don't rain on my parade because you're a good girl. I'm not.

I don't think I'll ever understand the obsession with Sorority Life or Farmville. Why would I want to spend hours of my life, that I'll never have back, earning stuff that's not even real?

Also, esettle0 sounds just lovely. I can't imagine why the other posters in the forum don't want to fall at her feet and make her their queen.

Well... if it's fun, it's fun. Why do people spend hours watching little moving pictures on a box when they could be playing outside? Why do people type opinions on the internet? I think if you start trying to dissect why something is "fun" everything gets boring very quickly.

I had a Farmville and a FarmTown going obsessively for about a year. It was something I could give my conscious mind to do while my unconscious mind mulled over stuff, like how other people play Solitaire.

Plus the little animals are cute.

FarmVille starts with the already potent variable-ratio reinforcement tactic of random rare drops, adds an extra layer of negative reinforcement that punishes players for not logging in to tend to and harvest their crops, wraps that up in an easy-to-learn system that doesn't require more from the player than a few clicks here and there, and intertwines itself into the most popular social network in the world so that players have fun with their friends in it and want to keep playing. I don't know anything about Sorority Life, but I'm betting it's much of the same in a different wrapper. Facebook games hit all the right reward/punishment buttons in players' brains while being persistently within reach and involving their friends, which makes them about as addictive as games can be while still being fun to play. They're not my kind of game, but I can see the reasons for both the appeal and the obsession.

I love FV because I get to just do shit for fun. No thinking required. I even get updates when the crops are done. Which is brilliant. It gives me a break from those damned addictive 20in20 and land comms on LJ.

I used to play it because it was very good at distracting me from my chronic pain. Anything that means less painkillers taken per day is a good thing for me.

This wank is giving me major flashbacks to Gaia. I was never heavily involved in the item-collecting aspect of that site, but the arguments over them were incredibly entertaining, especially once Evolving Items got introduced. Every other thread started turning into wank over whether Gaia was selling out how fast Gaia was selling out how much tribute their money-hungry Gaian overlords deserved.

Also, those inventory screenshots make me really want to replay The World Ends With You again...darn, I thought I was clear of that temptation for at least another year.

I introduced a friend to Gaia and it tore her free time apart with the earning internet monies and the puzzles and the buying and selling on the marketplace. In fact, I'm pretty sure she turned into Gaia at some point.

Oh my god. I've been wondering if SL wank would ever show up here. I sometimes just watch the game's newsfeed in jaw-dropped amazement at the amazing real-time wankage the game inspires. It's fabulous.

Better still, I've been watching the unreleased glam show up and counting down until people's heads exploded. I can't believe it made F_W! AWESOME. :D

My first college roommate didn't get into the sorority she rushed. So how did she deal with it? By making a shirt with a bunch of random greek letters on it, and getting a bunch of her friends who ALSO didn't get in to any sororities, to make the same shirt, and wearing it around like they WERE in a sorority.

I bet she plays this game, too.
