Sauren should have been this sneaky
Over in LotR fandom, the story of a Munchausen-by-Internet hits LJ. Sockpuppetry including a woman dying of cancer(llady_roisin), her putative husband (eli_14) and a spunky newcomer to the fandom (jedi_tarja"). Much OMG and "I'm so sorry, thanks for all your good work here!" abounds. All very feel-good and inspiring and pre-group hug.

But wait! There's more!

Alassante points out she posted about Munchausen Syndrome, not naming names, and still got pilloried by the sockpuppets.

Nierielraina posts as another mean, nasty person who doubted because of those pesky facts, instead of believing in the Love That Is Fandom.

Will Alassante and Niereilraina be called Negative Nellies for not joining the group hug? Will more WTFery be revealed? Or will overdosing on tryptophan and storming the malls at 3 am distract the (American contingent) LotR fans?

This is a complete tangent to the actual wank, but what does this: She expressed a strong disdain for the concept of "canon" even mean? I get not wanting to feel constrained by canon, but the fact that it exists doesn't seem that controversial to me.

Then how do you define canon if 90% of an author's writing was published posthumously, edited/amended/partly rewritten by his son, and, for any given fact of 'canon', usually offers at least four completely different and completely contradictory versions?

Because that is what those looking at Tolkien 'canon' have to deal with. Is it canon that Arda is flat? Tolkien wrote that - but he also later wrote that it is round. ;)

Based on previous experience with people who expressed similar sentiments... it probably means that she thinks canon and fanon are roughly equal, and that canon shouldn't impede on fanon, because fans shouldn't have their squee harshed by what actually happened in canon. Also, in a phrase, "canon is overrated".

My NaNovel this year actually involves a sockpuppet infestation that leads to a pseuicide. (I even threw in the main character reading a Fandom Wank report for it, because I needed some wordcount.)

Therefore reading this particular wank isn't procrastination, of course. It's research. ;)

I wish I could claim that.

I'm feeling a bit stuck right now with my NaNovel partly because of how much I fell behind when the power cut out a couple of days ago and didn't return until yesterday evening. -__-

Someday, the Internet is going to shut down and the industrial world's mortality rates will drop by approximately 37%.

Who knew that IP addresses were the magical cure for cancer and suicidal depression scientists have been searching for all along?

A lot of Roisin's original hospital adventures from 2009 are up for reading in one of the linked Yahoo groups.

One does not simply walk into a hospital.
New roommate and cat trouble.
"Elf nurse?" Tolkien fans are so goddamn annoying.
And other crap.

It's surprisingly boring and uninspired.

I'm kind of disappointed that she didn't demand lip gloss or anything, but the Elf Nurse thing almost makes up for it. Seriously, "Elf Nurse"? And he can fix the hospital's wireless connection, too? Wow.

I can't believe that email from this supposed "Elf Nurse" person didn't set off everyone's collective Skepticism Action Klaxon immediately, but apparently I live in a more cynical sort of world.

That second post is absolute mess, I could barely read it. And the third post was strange because the hospitals I've been at, only let you online at authorized computers or areas definitely not in the rooms. I mean there may be hospitals with different rules but for me that would have been a big warning bell.

Can you please update her friends? Roisin needs as many prayers as
possible right now. Please tell them to pray for the doctors also and
that they find out what exactly is going wrong with Roisin. I wouldn't
mind a few prayers either. I didn't expect to get so attached to
Roisin but I have and I'm worried sick about her. I don't know what I
would do if anything happened to her. It's a very intense situation
here right now.

....So wait, this is supposedly written by the NURSE? Who just met her? And is now totally attached to her in a matter of days, and is totally concerned that her friends on the internet know what's going on?

Or am I totally misreading this?

Bah, give SPN some time. There have been shipping wars, season 6 hate, and 'Sam vs. Dean' wank going on that hasn't been reported here (probably because it's just more of the same).

Although I'm not sure any fandom can come close to Harry Potter. I admit I lost some respect for the Vlog Brothers when I learned one of them (author of An Abundance of Katherines and such) is friends with Cassandra Claire.

What about the line that the OP stopped believing in them because they" simply suffered too many consecutive tragedies to be believed.

I love how suffering successive tragedies is highly unbelievable. I mean sure, anyone can have a family member die. But to then lose your dog and have your house repossessed? Now we KNOW you're a lying attention-seeker with Internet Munchausen's.

I think it's not the number of the tragedies but the timing of them that makes one suspicious. When calamities hit at just the right intervals to distract from hard questions, that's something of a red flag.

While it's true that many, many, many people suffer successive tragedies along these lines all the time, I think, in this case, this would be a better argument if the person who supposedly suffered all these successive tragedies hadn't actually turned out to be a lying attention-seeker with Internet Munchausen's.

That's actually the reason that, if I have multiple things going wrong, I never mention more than the first one and just maybe make a reference to things snowballing on me... because I've found that there's a certain point where nobody wants to hear about another thing going wrong in an Internet friend's life and stop believing anything's going wrong at all.

But then, I'm also a person who in RL is always going "no it's okay, I'm getting better!" even when I'm not (and I really need to do that less) so part of that's me assuming people are going to get sick of me any second if I complain. I've never understood people who milk that stuff for sympathy and swag.

I promise you I have seen exactly this phrase with a different name regarding a nearly-faux-dead online person before. I can't remember if it was on lj, jf or elsewhere. I can't put my finger on it. A fake online death involving hospitalizating and a suddenly doting if not adoring nurse posting desperate updates for her brand new newbie patient. I want to say it was in the LOTR fandom as well. I mean, is there a playbook?

The whole scenario from the drama, the husband, the dead child and the sudden death feels really familiar not from the basic outline but the details, the nurse just nails it. I find myself wondering if this is the OKSD poster's first time at the dance or if this is a rerun.

Either way, get a new hobby.
