Sanity clause ...
I almost snorted hot coffee out my nose while listening to this week's This American Life. Because lo, I bring you tidings of great joy. There was wank and it involved Santas. Santas breaking into factions and invoking Godwin's. Online drama. Real life drama. Santa against Santa.

I never considered Santa or Christmas a fandom before, but now I know. They cosplay. They have conventions. They live and breathe Santa year round. And they are as dramatic as any wankers we've ever seen.

If you click the link above, click "play episode" and ff to 22:00 you can listen to the segment. It's 27 minutes of wanky Santa hijinks and infighting.

Background reading:

AORBS website and history.
Santa flounces.
No, this is the real history and archives.

I know there is more, but I figured this was a good start.

Nobody expects the Santa Inquisition?

The internet aftermath details start around 42:00.

A website that was talked about in the podcast is Santa Check which "reports to be an independent watchdog group for parents, but appears to be a propaganda campaign, targeting Nick's enemies," for all your Santa-on-Santa grudgewanking needs.

I just remember being dragged into year-round Christmas stores by my mother and being very confused and somewhat frightened. It's a hundred degrees outside and you want to look at Christmas trees? WTF?

Note: As someone who married a half-Kiwi fellow, I realize that in the Southern Hemisphere this would be normal. In Virginia, not so much.

I was thinking when I was home last month that in a few years, my dad could totally be a mall Santa. He's got the beard, he's got the gut, and now that I read this, he's got the drama.

I need to make this happen.

Oof, it was hard to listen to the recording of the Santa Fight. It's kind of excruciating to hear Godwin's Law happening out loud, I have to say. Additionally, climbing the stairs while arguing destroyed those two. I was half expecting the punchline to be "HEART ATTACK". D:

I'm still having trouble getting my head around these organisations — plural, even! — existing. It was like a delicious Christmas dinner. And once you come to terms with that, you have to get a handle on the fact that they have ever-so-bitter internecine strife; it tastes like the finest of gingerbread. And then you get to read the big sadfacing flounce letter. Santacerely. That's the tinned sweets your aunt buys you every year, and you eat them even though you know you've already had enough sugar to last you until January. The bit where they get tricked by a guy named "Trolli" is just the icing on the Christmas cake.

The whole "no, we have the real story of AORBS, don't trust those guys, they only want your money" part? That was a wafer-thin mint.

It seems that Supernatural can also be sort of, tangentially related to mass drunken Santas when Misha Collins is involved. Apparently the Santas got so rowdy in crashing a mall that craziness ensued, and the Santa that decided pants were out of fashion was arrested.
