Linguistics fandom? Jesus fandom?
So, Dictionary.com, being Dictionary.com, makes posts about interesting words.

Today, they chose to post about the word "Xmas". And it has sprouted into the most adorable little wank.

There are blanket statements about people's intentions with the word:

While this may be true, the meaning of language isn’t as dependent on history as the intentions of those who use it. The intention of those who substitute the X are usually such that they are trying to avoid writing the word “Christ.”
(Posted by a user named Reason. Yes.)

There's preaching!

There's a modicum of capslock.

The intention of this person who substitutes the X is that I'm bloody lazy. *snicker*

*headdesk* I am so embarrassed every time I see another Christian use that. "X" is the first letter of "Christos" and is a perfectly legitimate abbreviation.

The only even remotely nefarious reason people use it is because they're too lazy to type out the whole thing.

Oh, paranoid fellow Christians. How I...am annoyed by thee.

Coincidentally, only yesterday I stumbled across vicious fighting over Jesus' name -- apparently Muslims/Jews/the Prophet Muhammad/Christians/ignorant people have caused everyone except True Fans certain people on the internet to use the wrong name, though of course what "the wrong name" is varies quite a bit, and the explanations vary even more. His name was lost and had to be revealed by Gabriel later because of translation errors! No, the Prophet invented a new name (or picked one up from malicious Jews) designed to connect Jesus to Esau and thus to inferiority! His name was "JAHshua" because it's got "JAH" in it just like YHWH and that's a Clue that He's God! No, it was "Jeshua" because that's a real name! No, it actually was Jesus, because nobody else had that name before and that's how special He was!

It all reminds me vaguely of some wanks I've read from anime fandoms, really.

Personally if I need to abbreviate it I use "Ch'mas" or "C'mas". Saves confusing people who don't know the whole chi thing, I guess!

As far as things to worry about go, I find people like this guy more concerning. I actually thought it was a joke at first, but then I read the "about the author" bit and saw that he's the founder of the Ayn Rand Institute. So he is probably totally serious, sadface. Does it anything about Rand's philosophy that I found it indistinguishable from a bad joke? YOU DECIDE.
