Whoa. Twilight.
I'm just dropping this link:

Twilight fic BNF goes out in a blaze of glory

because there's really nothing I can add to that.

P.S. Anon commenting is on. Play nice, nonnies.

ETA: If reading is hard you're even lazier than me, have the Cliff Notes version.

I don't know what's stranger - that apparently SQID missed the entire Lady Sybilla "Russet Noon" debacle and thinks she can publish her magnum opus, or that I'm actually starting to like the Unicorn orgasms writer.

What I really want to know is what her fans think of her calling her own work "silly." Because a group of them came over to my journal, called it "Some of the best literature I've ever read," and tried to convince me to read it.

I read the out-take that was written for charity - it's your basic emo erotica with the protaganists names changed to Bella and Edward. It's great that all that money was raised for charity, but right up there with the Moonlight fan who paid thousands for bus ads in an attempt to get the series renewed when it comes to a waste of money.

I think Cleo was talking about Unicorn Orgasm Girl, not SQUID Woman. I've pretty much always gotten the impression that Unicorn Orgasm Girl thought that her own fic was silly, so I don't know how anyone can really argue that it's brilliant literature, but I remember people doing it, and I don't doubt that they harassed Cleo about it. They're clearly a little nuts.

I'll admit that I'm liking Unicorn Orgasm Girl more and more, though, now that I've read her whole post.

Yeah. Again, "some of the best literature I've ever read." I really wonder how they would feel to find out that they... over-invested in it, maybe.

I'm hoping they overreact spectacularly. I think I've got a pretty good chance, there; over-investment and overreaction are pretty much what Twilight fans do best.

They're not actually pulling a Lady Sybilla. Evidently this is a ~thing~ in Twi-fandom these days. They've started their own publishing houses and are pulling their fics and changing copyright-infringing details so they can publish it as orig-fic and cash in on SMeyer's success.

Changing the details like it's Twilight but not Twilight? So Emma and Tedward the glow in the dark vampire with Jack the were-rabbit as the other part of the love triangle?
Where's Stephenie Meyer's notoriously outraged brother to flounce in outrage about this?

I'm pretty sure all the fics that have been "published" have been AU-all human fics, which is how they get around those pesky copyright issues. It's also vanity publishing, so it's more of an annoyance and a source of mockery than something that's taken seriously as a potential Cassie Clare situation.

And internet popularity totally equals real life popularity and PROFIT.

That's why my old listserv follows me around, praising my every mundane action and buying me things while nagging me to do something else, it's been two whole minutes, jeesh, I CAN'T WAIT THIS LONG FOR AN UPDATE. No one ever has a short attention span, or moves on, or finds a new fandom, or simply separates their fic-reading habits from their book-reading ones. NONSENSE.

I saw someone at my gym reading one of her books. If I had been wearing more than a towel, I might have started flailing and explaining about why THAT IS A VERY BAD BOOK AND YOU SHOULD FEEL BAD.

The authors of The Shoebox Project did well enough with Havemercy. Even while I like the books, though, the fanfic influence is pretty strong when you read them in terms of relationships and the complete lack of women in the first book.

Of course I'm sure more than one person has suspected Meyer of taking a Buffy fanfic with the serial numbers rubbed off and selling it as the Twilight we all know.

Horray, anon posting!

They did that with Uberfics in the Xena Fandom ten years ago. Some of the hardcore subtexters were rather culty and weird, but I was a Joxer fan so I couldn't talk.
