The internet will bend itself to my will!
Thank you to the people on wank_report for this – I’m not familiar with the show or fandom, so I’m mostly using their write-up.

Rakspatel is a livejournal newbie and a big fan of Sherlock Holmes, including the recent BBC version. She likes it so much, she's set up her own comm, Mycrofting. According to its profile:

"Mycrofting is not MY community - it belongs to its members. My vision for this community is that it is run by its members for its members. All members are equal and I have set up the community so that all members can post whatever they want, whenever they want. There is no moderation in place (just as with Cumberbatchfans). I actively encourage all my members to post their own pieces direct onto the community site. I want to make everyone feel at home and able to contribute. I want to give everyone a voice. Mycrofting will therefore end up being what its members make it. Mycrofting is a co-operative enterprise."

Mycrofting, however, doesn't exactly do what it says on the tin.

You can post whatever you want, whenever you want (especially if you're Rakspatel) - unless Rakspatel decides to make a rule you can't. You can contribute - but your idea might be called 'shit' if Rakspatel doesn't like it. You can offer constructive criticism of the way the comm is run - but Rakspatel will claim you're attacking her.

The whole comm is one big (cumber)batch of WTF, but some of the best links are here:

I hate your idea but your suggestions have been pretty spot on
If I have any more stress and drama I am calling Home Office security and Lambeth Police
I was advised to contact the BBC by a copyright lawyer who works for a TV company - do you know better than them?
I have had enough of the vandals.

(Oddly enough, Rakspatel took criticism about her original 'no slash' policy quite well and changed the profile accordingly.)

People (patiently or not so) try to explain things like netiquette and the difference between an LJ and a comm, but they don't appear to get through. And although Rakspatel is an internet newbie, she may have already discovered or is about to discover either (a) sockpuppets or (b) trolls

She's also been causing some drama in the comm dedicated to the lead actor in the BBC version, trying to dictate what people can and can't discuss (especially when his split from his long term girlfriend was announced), although it seems she's been shut down fairly effectively:

Yes I upset people, but plenty of people back me and what I say too.

Stories like this will not be on my com. (other posts were already deleted).

And the latest: Please cross-post this for me to a community I left in protest.

Livejournal fandom is not the first place she's caused controversy. There's a wonderful collection here of stories and links to the problems she's caused elsewhere: Short version - DO NOT ENGAGE.

ETA: The vandals have been hard at work, apparently. They care not for the haphazard breaking of rules and also dared to question Rakspatel’s love for Swivel and the cruel, cruel comments had to be deleted. But vandals are nothing if not organised, and caps can be found here and here (thank you [info]booksbagsshoes). Not to be deterred from her goal of…something, Rakspatel has been forced to start an invite-only comm because “[t]oo many people here had no respect. You could have made a separate post re random and had a discussion. Instead you chose to trash the Swivel post. I hope you are pleased with yourselves.”

Yeah, take that, people who expected a mod to abide by the wishes of a community whose very opinions she had just solicited! The reins have been handed over to a new mod, who seems to have realised just a little too late exactly what they’ve got themselves into.

ETAx2: Because Linked in is where it is at, not LJ, she's leaving the community forever. Really leaving. [ETA: Screencap here, thank you [info]_stolendreams_] Have you all noticed that she's leaving yet?

ETAx3: What, you thought it was over? The new mod tried to implement changes, which went over about as well as you'd expect. Rakspatel makes another post to remind everyone that she's still in charge (wasn't she leaving? And backing the new mod 100%?), which was then updated to add even more passive-aggression. Screencaps of both versions here (thank you [info]killer_gopher).

ETAx4: It seems to have mostly settled down but there's still a little entertainment to be had. Rakspatel has resorted to posting various correspondences with the Undershaw Preservation Trust, including one about her demotion. Members do not recognise the value of what she is sharing with them and are mostly ignoring her posts.

A slashfic was posted but deleted fairly quickly – cap here (thank you, anon!). A clever pro-fanfic post titled The Art of the Pastiche has also sadly gone unnoticed by Raks.

Don’t steal her copyrighted posh invitation to an ‘exclusive’ ten and a half hour event that will be held in the lobby of a theatre! Bonus: she’s also going to send it to [info]gozadreams, who spoke out about her antics in the 'do not engage' link above.

Finally, there are screencaps of various deleted posts here (thanks again for those, everyone!).

ETAx5: Raks discovered the various posts about her, banned two members and informed the community that anyone 'attacking' the mods (i.e. her) would be also be banned. And since one of the other mods turned on anon commenting, everyone came out to play. The post has been deleted but thanks to the anons on the wank_report thread (which has kind of exploded), there's a screencap of the post that includes all but one comment and a cap of the final comment before deletion.

ETAx6: I don't even know where to begin. It's probably easier if you just check page four of this post (and the soon-to-be page five if Raks keeps this up, which she probably will). Includes comment deletions, bannings, un-bannings, a new community and, of course, screencaps.

ETAx7: Raks has now been banned from four Sherlock forums, including the community she created. Detailed write-up plus caps here. And if none of that was bizarre enough for you, enjoy some more WTF here.

She reminds me of a fanzine editor I did illustration for 20 years back. He was new to fandom and keen to show us all how to do it properly. He insisted that his productions were not zines, but books. Xeroxed books, set in dot-matrix print, three-hole punched, unlicensed, and held together with screws. He was also of the belief that one of the novel-length fanfics he published would win a Hugo.

Perhaps he had a daughter...

Would you have sex in a cafe?
[info]jackandahat
2011-03-29 11:18 pm UTC (link)
The thing is, her metaphor is wrong.

Several people have told her that perhaps her personal journal is a better place for certain posts. She's gone on about how the comm is like her cafe, and she's posted that she's done with her journal because she has the cafe now.

I've never had a cafe but my family owned a pub. We hung out in the pub, had friends there, chatted and drank... and kept family business upstairs in the house. Behind closed doors, in our private space, and not in the middle of the public space. So her cafe metaphor doesn't even work!

...if she wants a website why doesn't she set up a website? LJ is a somewhat clumsy substitute.

(Great for journals and comms, not so much for publicity and building an e-zine type site)

Also, and completely off-topic, I saw Benedict Cumberbatch in Frankenstein (NT Live, I do love it) the other week and it was astonishingly good. Cumberbatch was amazing as the monster - although if you get to the point where you are watching Cumberbatch flop around a stage in skin-tight flesh-coloured shorts and you think 'this is going on a bit', then maybe that scene could do with a snip or two.)

Okay, so I was reading that quoted bit from the userinfo, and wondering how the hell an LJ comm with unmoderated posting was "unusual," and ... then I read the links.

"I want people to read it as a newspaper," she says, and in the comments to that Do Not Engage post, people mention her e-mailing everyone crowing about "scooping" them, and she really does not understand the internet at all, does she? She seems to be aiming to be some sort of Big Name Internet Reporter or somesuch. o_O

Mmm. I only know of her as this strange person who posted the Wikipedia entry text about Mycroft to a Mycroft-specific comm (brother_mine) and then complained when asked to use a lj-cut.
This is kind of less hilarious now :(

When the National Theatre informed us that email addresses from (Baker Street) Supper Club members would be blacklisted from their server due to the amount of content this individual was sending them we decided to cut our ties with her before our reputation was damaged any further.

Wow. All of this feels like very bad-touchy

There was a snarky metaphor I was going to build on her whole "tea shop in wherever" business, but it's late and I'm very tired. So all I have to say is Jesus Christ, lady, get over yourself.

*raises eyebrow* My favorite comment has to be where she's bragging how a copyright lawyer has told her to go ahead and e-mail the official people of Sherlock Holmes and then blissfully ignores them in such a passive aggressive way when they said, "Um, no I didn't." In the same thread.

That's something special, there.

RE: stalking Benedict Cumberbatch

We very politely asked for a photo (because don't ask don't get) - he very very very politely said no as he was knackered. We respected that and put our cameras away. We were the ONLY ones that did. And we stood and watched teeth gritted as others raced up and talked him into photos he didn't want to do while he backed towards the door trying to escape. The subject of your post didn't ask him for a photo.
What she did do was take about a billion and one flash photos of him an inch away from his nose until even my friend who is so laid back she is virtually horizontal was coming up with a few choice suggestions for what she could do with her camera. It was disquieting to watch but I put it down to over excitement. I've seen it before - new to fandom, new to meeting actors can result in really socially awkward OTT behaviour with the actors. I was less impressed when she admitted that she hadn't been at the show - I'm always wary of people who "happen" to be at stage doors when they haven't seen the production that evening. I understand people coming back if they were there the previous night and the actors didn't come out but that wasn't the case here."

She has been stalking Mark Gatiss and Benedict Cumberbatch at the stage door and "interacting" (if you can call it that) with them in a manner that is beyond description - not making eye contact, shoving stuff in their faces to sign, being passive-aggressive etc.

She has caused the admins in the forum a great deal of pain both on the internet and in RL and it's time people became aware of this. She is delusional and trying to use fandom for her own personal goals - trying to land "official" interviews with the cast and crew, trying to get "official" articles written and published. She even wants to show her fansite to the BBC once it launches. People have been trying to explain to her that this is the sort of thing that, for copyright (and a myriad other) reasons should not be done, but I'm not sure she is actually seeing sense."

Ya know, I really liked BBC's Sherlock and was rather hoping that the fandom it produced would not be so wanky and obnoxious.

Obviously I need to dial back my Pollyanna side, cos this is by no means the first, only or last bit of BBC-Sherlock wank I have witnessed, and there are some real weirdos who apparently like this show.

*runs away to go read her ancient giant 2-volume annotated Sherlock Holmes collection and ignore everything else*
