Entry tags:fandom: glee, i hated this show before it was cool, spoilers- noooo! you bitch! you bitch!!!, twitter

Twitter-based Glee wank! Some people are too dumb to be employed...
Almost entirely copied-and-pasted from (I assume) several mousies over on [info]wank_report! Thank you, mousies. *leaves cheese* Apologies in advance for any cock-ups on my part - I'm posting this to distract myself from the extreme pain currently emanating from my uterus.

Nicole Crowther (she tweets under her real name, which will be important later) is an extra on the Glee set and has been feeding the fandom spoilers on Twitter for months now. Today she decided to tweet a major plot twist for the upcoming prom episode (seriously, don't follow that link if you care at all about spoilers).

Glee fandom, a powderkeg at the best of times, predictably explodes (apparently there was a much wankier post on kurt_blaine that got deleted, which I sadly missed because I was out having lunch :( ). People speculate that her Twitter may have been hacked, or that she might be drunk. At least... Up until the spoiler is confirmed by a different extra who has been feeding the fandom spoilers (but who DOESN'T post under her real name).

There is much wailing and gnashing of teeth and rending of garments (basically just another day in Glee fandom), right up until Brad Falchuk (one of the showrunners/writers) tweets at Nicole:

@nicolecrowther hope you're qualified to do something besides work in entertainment.
@nicolecrowther Who are you to spoil something talented people have spent months to create?

Well, shit.

On the other hand, the showrunners and actors have something of a history of lying to/trolling their fanbase, so some fans are still suspicious.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE:

Seems an extremely invested fan actually called the Paramount Studio to report Nicole's transgression and thus get her fired.

Mousey/ies over on Wank Report have more: apparently Nicole apologised to Brad before deleting her Twitter, but not before being sure to flail about whining at the internetz bullies and to present us with the following classic:

@NicoleCrowther: I don't want to be an extra anymore that's why I said what I said. Haters need to back off, you're not cool or funny. Get a life.

Because obviously, the best way to quit your job on one of the most successful programmes of the moment is to break your non-disclosure agreement... Although if Gawker is to be believed, she's got her wish.

And to think, there's still at least a month until this episode airs!

ETA: SPOILERS NOW IN COMMENTS. Don't blame me, blame the C&P-er...

ETA II: Again, from a mouse on [info]wank_report ... shit's really going down!

Turns out, Nicole Crowther was fired from the Glee set last year for inappropriate behaviour, and it looks as though she's been pretending to be an extra on set for months in order to give out spoilers. The initial article suggests that there's now a possibility that all the regular extras on Glee could be fired and blackballed if her sources don't give themselves up, although that seems somewhat ... extreme?

ONTD_Glee reacts pretty much as you might expect, and some more info here and here.

I don't even watch Glee anymore, but I was thinking: how many of those disgruntled fans were the ones begging for spoilers before?

That fandom confuses me.

All of 'em. See, this is a wank without any heroes. It's kind of like one of those romantic domedies where all the main characters are assholes, and you really hope their relationships crumble five minutes afte rthe movie ends.

Well, from my limited experience with a casting company and as an extra, non-disclosure is generally built into your contract. That is, if you repeat anything you've seen on set and the casting company gets wind of it, your arse is fired immediately and you're unlikely to find work with anyone they know, ever again.

Karofsky wins Prom King and Kurt wins Prom Queen.

And it is meant to be mean. But Kurt takes the moment and kicks its ass. It is a much better moment for Kurt than Karofsky.

Does every show with a gay character in high school have to do this now? Nobody should be annoyed at having that unoriginal plotline spoiled.

However, firing someone via public Twitter is way harsh. Damn.

Being an extra is a shitty-ass job once you get past your first five minutes of "ooh, I'm on a TV set". You get paid nearly nothing, you get treated like dirt by the "real" cast and crew and you have no job security. I'm not surprised people would trade that for five minutes of internet fame. It's probably dumb of her to have tweeted under her real name, but who knows; she might be able to turn this into an entertainment writing gig now. Plus she saved the other extras from the witch hunt that would've ensued if she'd done it anonymously.

This is kinda depressing.

-Person gets internet fame by feeding SECRET SPOILERS to fans, likely breaking her non-disclosure agreement. This isn't something that you should do if you want to keep working for a show.

-The fans are all happy with it and keep asking her to sneak more info... until she gives the WRONG spoiler. Then they get her fired.

Human nature sucks. is there any way to flounce away from it?

I think Brad's first response was more or less done out of anger. Some say it was an ass move, while others seem to like she was fired publicly. But honestly, if he started with this one:

@nicolecrowther Who are you to spoil something talented people have spent months to create?

To me, that is a very reasonable response and can also lay on the guilt. You know that whole 'catch more flies with 'honey' aspect...

Based on the fandomplosion, I was sort of disappointed by the spoiler (though I say that as a non-Glee-fan.) I guess that's what you get when you're in a fandom where the general response to a spoiler about someone dying is "Meh, they've died before."

Considering the way the storyline's went so far (admittedly, I am some episodes behind, because this storyline was what made me finally throw my hands up and stop watching the show altogether), I really do not have any faith in the cast (except maybe Colfer, because he's one of the better actors on the show IMO) and crew to pull the spoiler scene off in a way that won't be gross. And if they somehow manage it, fandom will make it gross for them out of pity for the stalkery asshole of the pair, because that's what the shippers of that pairing have been doing since day one.

But at the end it's their combined performance that makes it a Gesamtkunstwerk, not the individual efforts.

On the one hand, posting spoilers about the show you're in, especially using your real name, is astonishingly unprofessional behavior. And then she blames the "bullies."

On the other hand, wow, getting someone fired for posting a spoiler they didn't like.

On the third hand, JFC is there a ship war behind this?

So she was fired months ago? And ever since she's been pretending to be an active extra on the set?

Wow, that's someone desperate for attention.

Not quite sure of the reliability of the source for the "fire every extra unless the leeker(s) come forward" though.

Crowther now she says she is exploring legal options, because her budding career has been ruined because of false information.

Not the best idea, I'm thinking.

I am more irritated by how cliche and underwhelming that spoiler is. I shouldn't expect a little more out of Glee considering that's basically a 90's teen movie in a musical tv series format but seriously, the spoiler is about as unsurprising as Will being terrible.

I feel bad for the extras though. It's gotta be awful to know that your job (even if it's for fun for some) could go away because someone violated the NDA.

Wait whaaaaaa... she had already been fired?

WHAT A PLOT TWIST

I now have this mental picture of her showing up on the Glee set every day wearing Groucho Glasses as a disguise.

Wow. This story just gets more surreal each time I take a second glance at it.

Although if anything could be gleaned from this, one might be... this is why we can't have nice things.

So what? She thinks she can make a career out of spoilers for one show?

This is just a shot in the dark and all, but I'm guessing probably not.
